What did you do to your Z this week?

Wouldn’t it have been better to have kept the L20, even if just putting it to one side? Given it’s probably the matching numbers engine.

(I am quite precious about Fairlady Zs though, given their rarity here)

I was the lucky buyer. It’s going to be put into my Fairlady ZL to replace the 280Z motor that it gained at some point in its life in the USA. That helps to balance karma in my book.

Did some spring cleaning on this over the weekend.

Still no engine or 'box fitted. Bottom end of the engine is built but I've been slacking in getting the cylinder head ready for it (its in the loft). Gearbox is refurbed, wrapped in plastic and ready to go in.

Exhaust (SS Kubo twin pipe system) arrived from Japan a few months back, heroically carried by a good friend and Z owner who happens to be an airline pilot. Super kind of him. Interesting comments by security & customs at both ends of trip apparently. I can relate, having done same trip myself with a stainless 6-branch exhaust manifold; security check-in at Narita airport thought it might be a musical instrument of some sort.

Need to pull finger out/stop getting distracted. Promise of nicer weather to come might help...

Forgive my ignorance but what’s the ss kubo exhaust would this differ much from the fujitsubo for instance?
Would the airline pilot in question also have a Z432?

It's a hand-made twin pipe system which is - in essence - a bigger-bore version of the OEM 432 twin pipe system.

There's a connection between SS Kubo and the original owner of the car, Masami Kuwashima, which is kind of nice in a roundabout way. Kubo senior was an original member of tuning house TOMEI, and he used to work on Kuwashima san's race 432-R as well as his 240ZG road car - which is what the exhaust will be fitted to. The cylinder head is a period TOMEI-modified E31 with a TOMEI camshaft. Exhaust manifold is a period Works item.

Yes! He also has a GP Maroon 240ZG, two early 1970 HLS30-Us and a couple of other interesting cars. You know who I'm talking about, clearly. :)

Ah I appreciate you explaining, it’s all rather fascinating. Lovely to build something where every part has its story.

Yes I believe so, he has some lovely cars and has a tremendous knowledge of them.

Fitted my MSA exhaust header. Not having a welder made things a little more difficult but overcome joining issues with a clamped pipe joiner which I will do away with at some stage when I get someone to weld the join to the rest of the system.

Unfortunately, the so-say snug slip fit of the downpipe to the header was not so and even using assembly paste, I have 2 small leaks which I will have to sort with further clamps. It looks nice even though the paint took a battering during fitting and most has now peeled off. It also sounds awesome and I look forward to seeing what difference it will make to the performance over the stock manifold.

Also fitted my newly powder coated cam cover.

Jesus, they look ancient. What's the story here? Were you sold something not fit for purpose?
Apparently if you Google R9 fuel hose cracking there are a shocking amount of results for it, it's just poor quality. Ended up getting some proper branded stuff from Carbuilder Solutions.

The slow dribble of parts for Dixie continues. This popped on eBay for a good deal and I had to grab it. Speeduino ECU, unused and ready to go. Will be while before it gets near the car, but that gives me plenty of time to ready the manuals and learn what the hell to do with the thing and building a loom for it!
