White 240Z Yorks.

I know a lot of folk on here like to have modded cars, my own isn't standard after all, but be prepared that at sometime in the future, you'll be faced with the choice that if you do want to sell it, the closer it is to std spec, the more likely it will be to get the better price.

Just some thoughts, and I know there will be the exceptions to the above, the likes of Ian's and Tel's superbly built modified cars will always find a generous buyer :)

Bit of petrol....I don't agree with the swapped cars and super-modified - I can't see them selling for +£20k because they'll be competing with orginal style ones at that price level and buyers will look to resale value as prices go up.

Sorry, but I don't entirely agree with your first point either ; I'd add :

"....the closer it LOOKS to std spec..."

ie keep the mods looking classic, period - call it what you will and under the skin and you'll attract an even wider market :

injection
aircon
PAS
lowered, upgraded suspension and better brakes, gearbox, diff etc but looking entirely classic.

Have you found a source for old Eight Tracks, so we can have the real 70s audio experience ? :)

Mike, on that trip to California in '77 I played 'Rumours' over and over on an 8 track whilst driving through Death Valley, Las Vegas etc - oh the memories! That's why I like to see the cars as they were then.

cough cough Hmm I can vouch that there is a strong possibility of + 35k ;)

and an 8 track not included

Damn, that craving for a second Z never goes away, lucky I don't have space to store a third one which will prevent me getting another for a long while.

I'll never understand why people care about everything being original, for me as long as it looks how you like and drives nicely thats all that matters, thats why I drive a car.

Ask what you wish but without a buyer coughing up 'cough, cough hmm' it's all hypothetical mate - what you put into it doesn't reflect end value.

100% agree.

I can definitely see the 911 model suggested by MikeB broadly mapping onto Zs as they appreciate and the newer (more affluent?) buyer base expands.I recall Rob saying a few weeks ago that he often gets calls from people looking for 240Zs and generally they want standard, unmodified cars. This may be the "matching numbers/originality" mindset applied elsewhere in the classic car market mapping onto Zs.

This stands at odds with the historical direction of the Z scene in the UK where modding has been commonplace. As a consequence, one could see more tatty modded cars getting a more "stock" makeover in the future (e.g. "be gone, nasty 80s body kits!"). I don't see any reason why sympathetically "period" modded cars shouldn't have a market at the high end though, and although the market would be most limited, the best hybrids I think, on the rare occasions they change hands, should find buyers willing to pay for the attention to detail and features in those builds.

I'm with Dave and Ian though - my car (and any future additional Z) is for me and my tastes, not for future resale potential. Factory original cars are great - but I wouldn't want one personally (with certain JDM exceptions of course!).

As a hypothetical buyer of modded cars, the thing that puts me off is the prospect of mending/replacing bespoke engineered & fabricated parts without detailed documentation. Just look at the fun Mr Ex. Jnr is having getting a set of brake discs that fit.
Every time I see the 'you just have to cut the transmission mount in 3 places and weld it back together about 1cm further forward' type thread, I pity future owners.

Points taken although said owner is looking to stay as 'Samuri OEM' rather than fit a (imho better) modern kit.....most 'OEM' parts are hard to find these days.

But I'd fit a 200SX box anyday and take the future consequences (of always finding the parts) over redoing a std box and it not lasting 2 years.

And yet the forum bows to the altar of a guy who would gas axe springs and do "porting" work with the head still on the block, and who never wrote down anything except on the back of a fag packet.

Maybe someone will buy your car Jon and never understand the engine mods you have done

A lot of misunderstanding and confusion is down to the 3rd party failing to do any decent research.....in the end, caveat emptor........... you can't fix stupid

Hes only having trouble due to the way the cars were 'modified'
