Shell Preparation. Essential but not much fun.

So today I made a start on fitting the fibreglass dash supplied by Throttleton/Craig.
The finish and fit on this are spot on. Very little trimming is needed to get a snug fit on the original metal frame.
Once all the holes are cut it will be off to get flocked

Also on the shell are a set of refurbished door hinges thanks to the kit supplied by Mr F.
No more sloppy door fit!!
Not seen is another of Mr Fs refurb kits... a pair of steering rack boots.
The fit is very good ... not perfect. But given the bargain price of the kit and the steep price of the genuine Nissan boot Im very pleased..
Also under fabrication is a firewall to isolate the fuel filler from the cockpit. Im also adapting an original black vinyl panel to cover/hide the firewall if the end user/buyer wants to retain the stock look rather than the motorsport look.
Hours and hours of detailed work and plenty more to come.

Dash does look a good fit, is it quite light, how does it compare to the original dash?

Work on the dash progresses. Its slow and tedious but Im positive the end result will be worth it. Weight saving wont be big as I have opted to retain the (heavyish) metal frame.
New outer is bolted to it in a few places then further strengthened by expanding urethane foam.
Almost a whole morning passed finding and fitting a suitable new clock that would go inside the existing casing so retaining the period look with a modern reliable 12V clock.
Even stock cars are tedious to rebuild but when custom built stuff is the order of the day then time just expands exponentially.
Grill refurb. Custom twin fan install.etc All existing threads need to be tapped to clean. Any new parts mean fixings need to be sourced and added. Self tappers just dont cut it on a motorsport build. Rivnuts and stainless steel setscrews are needed. IMO.
They are fit for purpose and look good at the same time
Just awaiting on some rally lamps to arrive and then more custom work to fit. Probably removable brackets so lights always go back on already aligned. I will then need a new alternative grill with lamp cutouts I think.
The alternative is to go for a drop bumper fitting?

Very nice indeed Pete, a fine job that. Know what u mean about the time to do stuff and my build is no where near yours, took me all evening to fit some pipe work on the engine. Looking forward to more updates.

Its looking good with the time you've put into it, all very neat and tidy and clean, well worth the effort.

Not any progress on the shell but I have been prepping and preparing for lots of sub assembly work.
Also sourcing and buying cable pipes fittings etc . all this stuff will be on the shell soon I hope. Then I can get the doors out of storage.
We have a 3.9 R200 with plate LSD. rebuilt drive shafts. New bearings on all four hubs. New calipers. New discs.New pads.New Braided brake lines to be built.Bias valve. There is a whole new sub loom to be constructed.
This week I have just picked up a "as new" Brantz Pro trip meter. So more work on dash prior to flocking to get the stealth install completed.

Got one pair of lights. I think I might need/get a second pair as Im going for the drop bumper fitment in the style of the No5 Altonen Monte Car.
A bonnet pod is too in your face for a regularity car as is having them in front of a stock bumper.
I wanted them behind a grill like Steve Perez's original Safari car configuration but that isnt possible with bonnet springs and a full bumper.
So drop bumper it is....(more fabrication)
The car will also have a regular bumper for daylight use for an even more stock look..

a good selection of new parts there Pete, nice diff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete, what's the rationale for the plated LSD, rather than ATB? is it homologation/originality?

ATB diff's don't really work in all situations, I'm guessing thats why? Pete, feel free to correct me:D

Pete, what's the rationale for the plated LSD, rather than ATB? is it homologation/originality?
Lets just say that the particular diff I am fitting is well suited to the anticipated end use of the car. Several factors involved but as usual Im not up for "free to air " discussion on any subject involving money or intellectual property rights:D

Well four months on and not a lot of progress. LOL!!
Those of you with an interst in Z32s will probably know that I have been busy on a winter makeover for my pal Bob's Time Attack slicktop.
This will be on its way by the end of January so work can start again in earnest.
Meantime I sent the doors to Bodymech in Nottingham.
This is a new business by some friends of mine and they have just painted Bob's car.
The week before they had the two doors from the rally car and finished the repairs before painting them. This is the first part of the outside in final glossy white.
this will allow me to get them built up again with frames etc
Im 100% pleased with the finish and as soon as the shell is fully rolling they will be getting that for its final paint.
The car will be finished in 2014 without doubt. i have a final spec planned but there is still time to alter it .
The engine build is due to start in Jan also. My engine builder has agreed to do the build .... provided I dont interfere too much.
I have just acquired a nice set of old school Italian Weber 45 DCOEs and I expect to take delivery of the all new Mangoletsi inlet manifold early in January.

Couple of pictures of the BRE rally car and how they mounted their lights, couple of questions for you;
The car is left hand drive but has amber tail light lenses, where was the car originally from?
Do you have some closeup pictures of how you did your jacking points and were they reinforced?

The BRE light install is good but its too extreme for a regularity car.
Im copying the Number 5 Altonen Monte style install. The whole bar will be removable and there will be a lightweight composite front bumper to swap in when lights not required.
Car is ex California.
There are probably some pics back in the thread about the jacking points.
Each one is strong enough to suspend the car on a crane from;)

Nice build! Just been through a complete bodywork restoration of a uk car and I must say I completely forgot about jacking points, too late she's now painted :) ah well

Nick

The engine build is due to start in Jan also.

So earlier I had a block acid dipped.
When it came back I primed it and put some base coat black on it.
This has been sat oiled up waiting for its big day to come........................

All I need to do is put it up on a stand and decide on a final paint scheme:D

Most people wouldnt incorporate this type of jacking point in an ordinary road car........

But im not "most people" ;)
And this isnt "an ordinary road car":D

Work progresses .............
Tomorrow the Bodymech guys who are doing the final paint are coming to "discuss"
Although Im a reasonably competent painter myself the car needs and warrants a professional finish top coat.
this weekend I have bolted on some front suspension ( strut is a temporariry unit NOT the final build one!!) so I can trailer it to their bodyshop in Nottingham as soon as they are ready for it.
So it wont be long before "shell preparation " will be complete:cheers:
