Respray

Hello All
I have just rejoined the club after a few years off.I have a 260z which I bought from a lady in Bristol many moons ago.It was on the road every summer for a few years then one year it failed the mot on a few things and it was put in the garage and left.Last year I had more time a large shed and a ramp.So I stripped it down ,the engine went away to be reconditioned.Engine is now back in the car and runs well. The body when stripped wasn’t as good as I hoped, but after a lot of work it is in need of a respray. So my question is what would I expect to pay for a complete respray? The body is not perfect so a bit of filler is needed but all sound.

It would be good to hear from anybody with experience of having a respray over the last couple of years.
Thanks
Stephen

If you get a quote for the above I’d question it. The time required to get that straight as an arrow is well north of 150 hours. Labour costs min £40, plus easily £600 of materials and overheads. Nothings cheap anymore. (Not that 4/6k is cheap…)

If you don't know someone who can do 'mates rates' it can be pretty expensive. I have been quoted 10k for a respray a year or so ago. Got quoted 6k for a MK1 Mx5 and that's easy by comparison.

Just talking to a few mates about this last week in the states...

One chap just had his 68 Mustang painted at a Maaco (low end single stage painter) and paid $7K....everyone thought is was a decent price but it did have some orange peel.

Nice base clear paint jobs that were $7K - $10K pre pandemic are now $15K and up everywhere here in Cali. It is just crazy, and this is the price with you removing the mechanicals in the case of a Zed.

I’ve been involved with a car ( not a z btw but similar age) this week that has been undergoing prep for paint.

It’s in a fairly high end body shop ( surrounded by everything from astons to e types to minis and a golf) and has so far had over 200 hrs of work at +£65 hr for receiving a metallic black respray . Paint to come .

It looked very straight beforehand to me - but I would say the owner specced a high standard .

I was told by the original target would be around £10k for a decent job.

My pal involved in the 911 scene - said they would be budgeting £15-20k for a good job

They are I guess , high end prices and it will depend what you want .

The approach taken on the car in the body shop has been do it once - do it right .

On old cars prone to rusting - I can see why his costs kept escalating as it went on , but hopefully will save any problems for the foreseeable future.

I paid about £6k back in 2012-13 and that was on a shell I’d done most of the work on as well - welding etc. it was coated in primer when the bodyshop got hold of it. I remember the guy saying the lacquer was expensive and they wouldn’t use a cheaper one as the finish would be so much better. Probably £10k now …

I've been quoted around 7.5k for a 3 stage high end job, and that's including stripping all the old paint off, welding up the holes in the rear valance, side markers etc. That's just the exterior though, not interior or engine bay.

I am up north though so it's a bit cheaper!

Have you tried your local fixauto?
I recently spoke to a chap that managed one and he said they always have a couple of classics in amongst the insurance jobs, and he thought they were well priced.

I’ve got a guy in between Tewkesbury and Gloucester that I’ve known for over 20 years. If you look for my Fairlady ZL thread you’ll see some work he’s done on my car and my thoughts on him. He only does classic work. He also has a good mate who is an amazing upholsterer and is well known in the classics scene - so they often work together on projects.

Let me know if you want me to put you in touch.

These quotes/estimates have opened my eyes to the costs. They are a large proportion of the overall value of an S30.

I'm going to asked some basic questions which I hope don't offend. The purpose is to try and look at this rationally and see if you really need to spend these eye watering figures on your car.

First of all the roof - how good is it? Does it follow the shape of an original 'non-sunroof' i.e. does it have the complex curves and no raised local areas where the welding is? If it's not 'very good' it will cost a lot of time to get this acceptable to a top-class bodyshop. If you are looking for a 'top-end' job then should you consider a new (secondhand) roof replacement. If you are not after a 'top-end' job then choose your bodyshop appropriately otherwise there might be conflict there.

Engine-bay - is this staying black? If so fine but again this will detract from the value so be careful not to overspend on the rest.

Area in front of the radiator and underside of bonnet - what are your plans there?

Interior metalwork- are you leaving that?

Chassis - is that good, repaired well and are you going to paint it yourself?

I'm thinking that if you were prepared to do a lot of the prep/filler yourself and to accept a car that will look 'smart' but not 'A1' you may be able to find a sprayer who would paint your car over a weekend if it is ready for him.

It all depends on what your vision is for the car and how deep your pockets are. The body looks good from the pictures you have posted so it shouldn't rust under the new paint and it will look very presentable.

Paying £10k to have a car sprayed would worry me.

The other thing is that the car needs to be seen 'as a whole'. If you spend a lot of money on the paint for an A1 job (and hopefully you get one) is the rest of the car going to match?

Just my thoughts based on my own experiences and seeing other projects on here. Also be careful who you choose, you can be let down in so many ways.

Speak to Cotswolds Accident Repairs in Witney. Business name aside, they work on a lot of classics and are a reputable father and son business … but expect to join a queue

When I started out restoring my 260z I just wanted to end up with a nice usable classic. So to answer a few of your questions.I bought a old 240z a long time ago which was past repairing to use as a donor car .So the roof was cut out of that,it needs a bit of work but the shape is there.
The engine bay ,around the the radiator and under the bonnet are staying as is.
I am going to tidy up the inside of the car but I don’t want it painting .As for the underside of the car it is sound and has already been painted.
I would like a paint shop who would do a good job but it doesn’t need to win any prizes. The two people who have given me prices for the respray say the preparation of the car is as important as the painting,so best leave it to the experts.

Sorry, but I don’t know how you can leave the engine bay black on a Z - any Z. If you’re having the whole car sprayed, to whatever level of finish, the bay needs to be body colour to me. It’s a couple of weekends work to get it out and prepared I reckon … worth the trouble when you see the final job … just my view.

There was a bloke on Pistonheads who sprayed his ‘70s Maserati himself a few years back … I might try and find his rebuild thread …
