Orange LHD 260z

Eventually got to LA and the first port the boat stops at is only a few miles from where the car was collected from. Madness.

Stress for you and bad advice from your shipper.....and then buyers here complain at prices when all they have to do is open their chequebook !

Thanks Jake. I'm really happy with it. Booked in for MOT tomorrow morning and rolling road tuneup on Wednesday.

that should be interesting john on an automatic on Wednesday, i wonder what they do with regard to them dropping down a gear (kick down)

Your only looking at fueling through the rev range and under load so any high gear will be OK I would think. I'm not looking for power figures, just correct fueling and enough ignition without pinking.

Well sine he has 7 Zs he can choose auto on Wednesday, 240 on Thursday, black on Friday, hybrid on Saturday, quiet exhaust for going to church on a Sunday! ;)

Seriously nice car Johny!!! I admire your patience and tenacity. Good luck got MOT buddy!

The rolling road session has improved the general running so now I needed to look at the handling. It wallows and bounces around at the front and the stearing is very vague. So, the only thing for it was to spend a fare lump of money on some new parts. You may as well replace ALL the parts that ware as there's really not that many so here's the list:

Rack mounts
Track rod ends
Ball joints
Tie rod bushes
ARB drop links
Dampers

So I replaced all these bits which is about a 4hr job and it transformed the car. Had the wheels ballence e on the way home to sort out the vibration problems.

Also lowered the front a little and will lower it a bit more tomorrow after taking the car to its first breakfast meet.

You don't hang around if you do that lot in 4 hrs - it would take me all weekend.
How'd you lower it? does it have them coilover things?

The use of Terry's ramp makes it so much easier. I had stuff to do this morning so didn't get started untill around midday and had it back on the ground before 4.

I use the frowned upon method of cutting a small piece out of the springs. Took half a coil out which lowered it about an inch and is still higher at the front than the back. Remember this is a US car that sts really high so there's still about 3" between the tyre and the arch. I will take another half a coil out of the other end of the spring to bring it down another inch. The rate will also increase a bit as there's less coils to compress. Note, I still needed to compress the spring a fare bit to get the damper nut on so the spring is not loose in the strutt. Not sure how this will work on a uk 240z.

That'll explain it :) why take 1/2 turn of the other end? I'd take another 1/2 of the same end: at least leave one end with the right end treatment!

What damper rates do you use for US springs Sean. I don't see much choice on the market unless you go for custom strutts.

RR figures are just representative but as you ask. The first runs showed up to 27hp and struggled to pull above 5k. It was running far too lean in the mid to top end and running 22* timing at idle and 55* max advance. A couple of hours playing around and the initial pickup was greatly improved and the afr's through the range set to how a 40 year old car on carbs should be. It now revs to redline and made 96hp at the wheels on this dyno. As I said, its the comparison I'm looking at and not the actual final figures. For me its mainly about low to mid range drivability and not about high power figures. It's an auto 260z remember.

Jon - at half a turn the end is still shaped to fit the seat so if I take it off the other end then both end will still fit the seats better.

I don't think they are John - on mine at least, the very ends of the springs are straight, not coiled, giving them a better location in the spring seat.
Take a look at the spring off the car - I think you'll see the end goes 1/2 wire width outside the other coils.
(easy to see, hard to explain)

Back at Terry's this afternoon, after taking the 260 to the local breakfast car meet.

Took another half coil out of the front springs and the car still sits higher at the front than the back. Only about an inch in it now though. Fixed a couple of exhaust leaks which makes it sound a lot better then moved on to the weather strips. Replaced the rear hatch and drivers door which made a big difference. Drivers door still closes too which is a result. Stripped the drivers door down to remove the broken mirror and will fit a new pair of retro ones tomorrow. Doors were in lovely condition with the plastic still under the door card and all new looking internals. Not many jobs left to do on it so time to enjoy.
