The whole GTO replica scene sounds like one big rip-off.

Mark, buy a real Z for the Zs' sake and leave the 'poor' wannabe-rich money-traps to those who like dealing in art.

In a fit of madness / desire / alcohol fuelled haze I bought the GTO rep referred to in post 85 on this thread and would appreciate some comments / advice.
1. Built in the mid 80s supposedly, any idea of the kit make?
2. £9400 seems a good price to me for what has cleaned up very well actually, the previous chap only put a couple of hundred miles on it in the last few years, but it drove from London to Cardiff, no hiccup.
3. It has a petrol tank on display in the back through the hatch, is this an original feature?
4. Mechanically I think it needs a refresh up, triple webers need tuning.... Anybody use Auto Active in Bristol they seem to be the nearest specialist to me - any good?
5. Is it worth going the expense / effort of converting the rear hatch to the boot system?
6. What do I need to watch out for on the 260 or check is ok, it looks solid underneath?:conf2:
Cheers

Bloody ell!!

I just looked at post 85! Looks awesome Mark! Congratulations and welcome to the Z Club. I love it, nice to see attention has been spent on the interior, which is so often overlooked on these conversions.

Please, more pics when you can, stick em in your gallery! :)

There was a kit called the Alpha One that I think was around during that era, I guess it could be one of those. The Colin Shipley book has a section on them, I will take a look later and report back.

The tank would have originally been under the car, not in the boot, so I guess that is a feature to make it look more authentic.

As for converting the rear hatch, it's all up to your personal preference, I think it looks great as it is, but if its a bug bear for you then you can always do it.. I guess it should add value to the car also.

Keep an eye on the chassis rails and waxoil regularly.

I bet you got some mad looks up the M4!

Geoff is great when I have sought work and advise over the years. He's a very keen track driver too and has some great mods.

As for tuning, I cannot recommend more "Sigma Engineering" in Gillingham, Dorset. Peter Lambda is a true genius when it comes to setting up carbs (Reputed to be one of the best in the west)

Thanks for the reply, I am really pleased with it so far. The hatch doesnt bother me as I will be using the car regularly, not 'showing it' therefore I want it useable not pefect. There is little point trying to pretend it is something that it isnt, you only have to look at the tax disc, which states Datsun to know what it really is anyway. The M4 drive was something of an experience, two people nearly went into the central reservation craneing their necks, one person took a photograph, about 90% of all passengers who past turned to look and point, I think I either need to paint it black or buy a balaclava to hide my embarassment. Its very loud and very cold, are heaters a weak point and / or can they be improved.

Hi and welcome
sounds like you are enjoying the car - and so you should be, it looks great, hope you might come along to some meetings in the SW be good to see it in the "flesh"

Give Geoff of Auto Active a call - he can give you advice

Would you be interested in doing a small article about it for the club magazine?

i would be very interested to see some more pictures of the car and the interior and under the back where the exhaust comes out.
as for the heating they are normally quite good ,check that it has a thermostat and the the pipes to the heater box have not been blocked off otherwise it might be the heater valve that is stuck or the heater matrix might be blocked.

i was very keen on this car also, i have a replica ferrari 360 which will be sold soon to buy a om sportscar (scorpionz car). if i had the money i would of bought that one, i have seen about 5 in the flesh for sale and all needed alot of work, really with the gto replicas you should of payed for an inspection ,as the glassfibre panels can hide alot!, it might of found a few things for you to bargin with.
i looked at one last year for £12,000, had an ispection done and he said it only worth around £6-8k.
are you interested in any of the kit shows? theres usually 2 or 3 on show each year.
roy kelly has done one on a 924 porsche, have a look at his web site

Haha.. I so want a ride in that!! :D Great story, it put a grin on my face and I wasn't even there! You will get use to the attention, don't worry no banaclava will soon be required.

I think you got it at a good price and it sounds like you are already having lots of fun! :)

I believe the quote from Life of Brian is "You lucky bastard!!"

Very nice indeed. love the drive home description, LOL - I'd have been beaming like a Cheshire cat!!

Personally I like the boot conversion but I would imagine retro fitting would be a costly pain in arse and as you say, the hatch is practical.

I only hope to be able to "join the ranks" when I boot my cobra out in spring.

Cold....noisy....tripple carbs.....sounds great!!

I feel better for discussing my affliction here thanks to you all, fellow nuts. I collected it Christmas eve (at least I had a quiet Christmas as wife not really talked to me till new year ish). I too just got rid of my part built AK Cobra, no time to finish it, but the 6.3litre Jensen Interceptor engine looked gorgous in it. She thought old motors were a thing of the past Ha....

I will post more photos when I get round to cleaning it properly and will try to attend the local meet (as long as I get a promise not to be chased down the road by the purists).

Smash, the hatchback is not really that practical as the rear is full of petrol tank and anyway I do not have a key to fit the lock, I think a small tap with a large sledgehammer is required..

Weeeeyyy! Congratulations! Will you add more parts to it to make it more authentic? I know you said above about it being a daily drive, but a few little things like door handles, light covers and mirrors would work wonders!

I'd love to see it in black! :) What are your plans for it then?

If you're ever up north (past or near Leeds) let me know and I'll come down and bring all my camera/recording kit so you can have some great quality video/photos for the forum here!

Congrats again! I can't wait to see more posts/photos here!

MarkP are you looking at the same car, it has got headlight covers and mirrors, I hope your not mistaking it with that horrible other one on ebay at the same time - yuk.

My family live up in Middlesbrough, so no doubt will be up that way in it in the spring, I'll give you a shout as I m passing Leeds.

Cheers

Hola! :) No, I meant the headlight covers and mirrors were wrong (if it is the same motor I'm thinking of, post pics) the one I'm thinking of had a kind of smoke black effect around the edges of the light covers and red mirrors I think...

They should look like this:

Mark - you're thinking of the one that's back on ebay for £4K buy it now, black inside the headlamp cowels and 'colour keyed' (nice  ) door handles. oh yes and none of the nose or rear wheel vents were cut out...

....and it had the wrong wheels

....and it didn't have a hatchback or a boot

....and....etc.

The one at post #85!!! :D

On a far more distressing note, Roy kelly is now selling his Porkari Bloatey-O (that's a bit harsh isn't it? Doh!) bodykits.

Doesn't look bad from certain angles but but does from others . . .
