Gutted I cannot come today. WOuld have been great to meet you all - next year ...... watch out for the orange thing.

Tiz of course our very own MrF running head to head with Tony260Z, for the benefit of the film crew who are shadowing Tony Lamb and his family for their TV prog.
Weather was sunny , dry and bitterly cold . No one seemed to be able to match there best times from previous outings. I was 0.1sec of last months best with a 16.06 today.
ill let the others who ran post their own times.
Personally a little disappointing, but just need to practice more as the main problem seems still to be the nut behind the wheel!

Thanks for the update Jez and Pete. I'll be interested to hear more from today. I've never been to any Drag event (not even seen one).

It looks like its soooooooooo easy, and there are no corners so it must me easy peasy, Right???
Well it aint , not for me anyway, its frustratingly difficult to even get two consistent runs, never mind get a quick one! And its no good practising at home cos the bleeding tarmac at the Pod is like no other in Britain( except the bit a Avon Park )

Memo to self ...... Must try harder.... must try harder..... etc

Anyway its Sunday April 10th for round 2. Ill deffo be quicker then! Right???

First time at Drag Race - yep, that was me today.:)

I have to say that it was really enjoyable - I got 4 runs in, but need to have a bit of work done to the car (and lots more practice for me) before I can join the elite bunch under 15 secs. Never mind, I tanked a TR7 before being sunk by a Civic R.

It is a well organised event with easy to follow rules - and it was also easy to find the Z Club meeting place in pride of place right next to the track. It is worth getting there early (9.15ish) and get a few runs in before the place becomes packed. It was about 10 mins between runs at that time but nearly 30 mins about 12.00.

Thanks Mr F, Steve K, Tim and Tony for helpful advice. Good to meet you all at last. :D

I'll try and post a couple of pictures as well.

Finally I just have to mention those nutters on bikes with times of 9 secs - sheer madness, but phenomenal to watch - and the noise!!!

Lots of practice and lots of rubber is what I need. Couldnt get any grip today! But enjoyed the experience. Wont mention my time as i saw a bloody Nova do it over a second quicker

Absolutly fantastic day im a pod virgin and really enjoyed it Mr F took me under his wing and showed Dr Shemp and myself around and explained how it all works, deffo there in April, nice to meet all the other faces, btw 17.310 secs 1/4 mile, improvement needed for next run, maybe next time i wont fill my tank with fuel and end up with 3/4 when i get to the drag strip (think next time, muppet)

Like these 1's I filmed there, cos they was so wicked :D

Bikes @ the pod

Blimey... that pic was on another site???

LOL... that's the run I redlighted. I rolled too far while trying to get my revs right, tripped the red, hesitated while Mike shot off up the track, thought "Oh sod it", gave it far too many revs, span 'em like a maniac and did a 17 point something.

Not an auspicious start!

Dont get disheartened Dr Shemp, that nova probably had a 2.0 calibra engine shoehorned into it. And then it would be rechipped!

Thoughts on power to weight ratios:

I was speaking to a chap with a turbo'd beetle in the fireup lane. He'd run 12.5 already and I understand he improved that to 11.9 by the end of the day. "That's pretty damn impressive," I said, "how much does your car weigh?"

"With me in it, 1,930 pounds" he replied.

"And how much power have you got?" I asked.

"150 brake at the wheels" he said. (I understand he's got a 2.3 underneath the turbo, as well as having his engine right above the wheels which helps!).

I asked Mike what my 260 weighs, and without a driver it's about 2,600-2,700 pounds. I add another 200 to that when get on board. So, circa 2,800-2,900 pounds all in. That means that the beetle guy has the best part of a 1,000 pound advantage. It would need a fair amount of horsepower to overcome that !

This reinforces PMac's point. If you want the easy route to a good ET at the Pod, just find the lightest car you can (Nova, Corsa, Fiesta, whatever) and squeeze in a two litre turbo lump. Hey presto instant decent ET's!

I takes a bit more work for us with our older and heavier motors to get there, but it's great fun!

Hi,
Well done to all those that braved the weather!...I went to the Restoration Show to get some headlining material for my 300ZX and it was cold enough in there!
The sort of car you mention has been specially built as a light weight sprint car, so as you say, you can't really compare a Z to it!
Zed's are great all round cars and weren't intended as 1/4 mile sprinters. My own Z31 is more of a grand tourer and doesn't really get going until over about 60mph!
I might bring it along when it's out of hibernation and see if it can even beat a 1.0L Nova!
Cheerz,
JEZ

Not disheartened (yet) and am sure times will improve with practice and experimentation. On my first ever run I removed the airfilter/housing and heard a pop followed by a strong fuel smell so I eased of the pedal short of the finish line and still got a ticket showing 16.77 (must have been a blow back) but it goes to show that theres room for improvement. Anyone see that silver fiesta doing 12.5's ?BLIMEY!!
See you all on the 10'th

I beat a silver Fiesta in one of my attempts.

Obviously a fault in their timing computer and I did a 12 second run!

*choke*

:D
