MZR podcast - good chat with Rahail

You could call them a lot of things, but 'Tuner' is probably one of the least appropriate.

They are building complete bespoke-build cars from constituent components, Part Number One being the bare bodyshell itself, and adding their own selection of parts with the aim of making a well-balanced and complete package of content.

I would say the vernacular term 'Tuner' is more likely to refer to an outfit that concentrates on one aspect of an already built - usually recent production - car, with the focus on bolt-on 'upgrades'. Not the same scenario at all.

cf: Eagle E-Types. 'Tuner'? Don't think so... https://www.eaglegb.com/
Fancy tuner

General questions, relevant to all such 'fancy-tuners' including DB5s, Eagle E-Types*...

They’re a car builder not a ‘tuner’.

.....if so, should they be crash and emissions-tested.......getting complicated to sell new-made cars these days ?

If new components are added to a non-original chassis ie not a rebuild, should they be classed as 'kit-cars' ?

.....if so, should they be crash and emissions-tested....

No. For reasons obvious to anyone who has thought the matter through, and who knows what they are talking about.

If new components are added to a non-original chassis ie not a rebuild, should they be classed as 'kit-cars' ?

No. For reasons obvious.... etc.

You're not going anywhere useful, informative or even constructive with this, are you? If your above scenario applied, most of the cars owned by participants on this forum would count as your 'kit-cars'. Luckily the guidelines and rules applied by the relevant authorities can prevent such nonsenses from troubling us.

If you think about how these cars are made, can you tell me what a non-original chassis is on a unibody car?

I like them, like what they do, good luck to them. Good for the marque.
Not for me though at that dough

We should have locked this after the first post.

Yeah, maybe you're right, no point people discussing and exchanging views on a forum....;)

Just provoking a thought process and discussion....and some people here don't want to do anything - it might fail !

No, I don't think most of the cars would.

Yes, but which authorities ? MZR sell cars all over the world.

Is a GTO a kit-car ? Ok.....I'll get my coat - good evening chaps.

Fancy tuner

:D.

Im pretty sure MZR choose not be labelled a tuner - but the general definitions of such are about modifiying cars for individuality and improved performance and handling as far as I am aware ... which could fit.

I think the typical connnotations around 'tuner' are ones , that someone as brand aware as Rahail would consider and avoid - throughout the podcast ( If we remember that from post 1 ) he uses the term 'resto-mod' .

I think the resto part of that - is as ( if not more ) important as the mod ( where what i perceive as tuner cars - concentrate on the mod) for Companies like MZR - and thats where the increase in price comes from .

There was trash internet article the othe day comparing Porsche 'Tuners' - in which Rauh-Welt and Singer were both mentioned - very different beasts.

Then you'll need to explain - in detail - why you believe many of the cars owned by members of this forum should be classified as 'Kit Cars'.

You'll probably dance around the topic a little and then - as usual - either move the goalposts or change the subject.

Yes, but which authorities ? MZR sell cars all over the world.

Construction & Use regulations, as well as legalities over car identity/licensing/registration, differ - obviously - from one country to the next, but the key point with a modified S30-series Z is that it will almost always carry the same identity that was given to it at the factory when it was originally made. This identity in non-transferable. It is - obviously - up to the buyer to ensure that his purchase is legal to own/use in the country to which he intends to use it.

You think different?

Is a GTO a kit-car ?

What 'GTO'? A Ferrari? A Pontiac? A Bridgestone....?

Agreed, so don't you think that - as you've shown - the term 'Tuner' is so rubbery as to be almost meaningless? Do the people using such terms throw the likes of Speedwell, Jeff Uren, Holbay, Piper, Brabus, Mine's, Schnitzer, Abarth, RE Amemiya, Baldwin-Motion and Fred Bloggs' Rolling Road into the same pot? It would be daft.

These days 'Tuner' just sounds like something a 14 year old kid would drop into a comment on an online gaming forum.

Personally - 'Tuner' is not a term I readily identify with . I thought that was perhaps my age .

To me - it was something applied more to the associated culture - that was rather non-specific ( so yes- rubbery) and had various sub -cultures ( remember RICE cars - Race Inspired Cosmetic Extra's )
A late 90s/early 00's scene ( fast and furious?) with street cars tipping a wink to motorsports influences - but more centred on aesthetics than demonstrable performance.
Just my take on it.

And , Yes - the people using those terms would throw all of the above into the same pot - 100%. And I'm sure all of the above would have the same feeling towards such a label as MZR would.

I think those 14 year olds may be a bit older now - theres a chap near me drives what i would call a 'Tuner ' inspired Lexus .
He looks like the comic book seller off the Simpsons - and probably still spends a lot of time on gaming forums.

Hang on Rob . Theres an inportant point in the discussion we havent touched on .

Q: How many cars have you made ?

Rahails answer is they aim to produce 8 per year but that varies.
He then goes on to explain how in the early days of the business they made ' a lot of cars ' - but he wouldnt class them really as MZR cars - becuase they didnt have a lot of the bespoke elements of MZR which came along in/around 2018. There are only 9 or 10 cars out there that are full on MZR cars - with a lot more to come .

There may be some history with this kind of thing . Perhaps some kind of register could be in order ..................

Please, no more on whether it's right to call MZR a tuner. Unless I get an inbox full of PMs hoping for more back and forth on it, further posts on it will be deleted.

A 'lot' of cars ? Hmmm, and whether they're entitled to be called 'really* MZR cars', their photos have been (still are ?) exploited on the MZR website and media pages.

I think a register would be a great idea but what do I know, so there are real MZR cars and not so real, some with bespoke parts - a certain Samuri springs to mind with some rare wheels, some with none at all.

MZR was founded in 2013 but it was only after 5yrs production that cars became MZRs...o_O

Lister formed a similar list but didn’t really work.
Some cars were customers cars with various lister mods, others were new cars delivered to Zloster for conversion and others were built from a new Jaguar shell.
So what constitutes a proper “Lister”?
