MZR podcast - good chat with Rahail

Pretty sure the paying customer gets a decent say in how things go.

I know they do but I said consulting fans not customers….cultivate a little interaction – anyone seen a reply from MZR on FB when a photos is published ? Costs nothing and keeps your thread/post etc up at the top there on Google search !

......why not even humour fans and consult a bit, to at least reduce the sensation of aloofment ?

And furthermore, I suggested tackling more than ‘just’ the 240Z :

I'd like to see the entire range of S30s (and why not S31s) in his catalogue…….be different than other Z restorers than how best to improve and decorate an S30

Taken more than a tadge out of context or simply misunderstood and perhaps I wasn’t clear enough……..people are quick to pounce aren’t they ? J

Is this clearer ?

Rahail is there to turn a profit - he can and does have all the passion for 240Zs but not club* spirit - he's a business-man primarily (and without a doubt, the family pressure is there for him to succeed for he is a brave man to have taken this route rather than the safe family business) but first and foremost, he and MZR have to continue existing and that means commissions and profit.

Is he here on the forum ? No

Is he a club member or MZR as an entity – the treasurer can confirm

Is there a a Saturday coffee and croissants morning once in a while, perhaps even a local group coordinator with club access to shows so a win/win situation as we did with Nissan here at Rétromobile, Paris last year ?

…..is there even a casual relationship with Nissan to mutual advantage (getting bored of seeing that yellow triple-carbed Z now – it was even translated into French here by C and S France)…maybe it has already been dismissed by Rahail for the best reasons ?

Is there an annual open-door welcome to local and national club member/Zowners – again, the more Z-owner fans he has talking about and ‘endorsing’ the product – the better.

…….has anyone from the club officially opened a dialogue with him on the above ?

It’s probably not his fault he’s not a ‘club’ person – we all bitch about this and that on here – maybe time to convince him of the positive aspects of a better and closer ‘relationship’ ?

Anyway, sings Metallica « Nothing else matters » stay focussed…Sean Connery has passed away – I want to see an MZR 00special tribute Z, why should Toyota have all the fun ?

LOL

I remember Geoff Jackson of Fourways Engineering telling me about a 'club event' they agreed to host at their premises. Various club member 'traders' set up their stalls and expected to sell their wares/services to attendees on Fourways' forecourt.

Don't think there was a follow-on event...

I hope this Thread doesn't deteriorate into an argument like most do.

The podcast was interesting but for me it focused a bit too much on image.

The people who buy these cars are not your typical Z Club member. This Club tends to be for the 'owner/builder/driver'.

There is room for us all.

I’m not sure that MZR’s involvement with the club would do anything for his business.

There are very few guys in here that would be a customer if theirs.

I know guys that have bought the Alfaholics cars are they are serious car nuts with some heavy metal around them and the Alfa is a mere toy to them, pocket money.

He might get some enquiries about seats.:)

Haha yes, which they won’t answer.

That’s what gives the impression of “aloofness” which someone mentioned earlier.

If I were in the market for an MZR I’d be reluctant because of this stance

I like Rahail, he is professional, respects his clients privacy and creates an amazing product.

I also get why he doesn't post here or interact with the comments on social media, if anyone who is serious wants to contact him i am sure he will give them all the time they require.

And quite right not to.

Have you ever had a bespoke suit made for you? I see the MZR format as something similar. You'll get to choose a lot of the details you want (hence 'Bespoke'), but if you go to Anderson and Sheppard you are going to get an Anderson and Sheppard suit.

Try asking a Savile Row tailoring business if they will give you the names and numbers of their outworkers, as you want to 'cut out the middle man'. I'm guessing you'd get something a bit more than "aloofness" in return.

Im going by experience, 40 years in the top end of the Motor trade but later started up a Company called Etype UK.

With my Brother and 12k in the bin we pioneered lots of upgrades and bespoke builds. The company sold a few years ago and is one of the leading companies building Etypes today.

We started this company as I say with 12k, building it slowly. Our main success was based on the fact we started up the Etype UK forum, it’s now massive, the only Etype Forum.

We offered up help and advice to everyone on that forum being open and transparent and it was an open shop. Anyone could come and see.

It was fun, we were proper enthusiasts of the brand and the customers were top notch in the main.

That’s how we did it. Built a community on it.

All well and good, but I don't see the relevance to the MZR situation?

But if you started your E-type forum when it was the only E-type forum, then how is that comparable with the S30-series Z's situation?

There have been Z-related mailing lists and forums almost since the beginning of the social media age, and MZR came about well after all that. How could MZR "build a community" that was already existing in many formats elsewhere?

I just don't see how Martin and/or Rahail as MZR would stand to benefit in any measurable way by participating in forums like this one. In fact it could easily be turned against them, such as if somebody insisted on knowing where their seats were from/what they were based on/where they were made.

Why would they be obligated to supply that information, and - indeed - would it not be a bit previous to ask...?

No, I think they are doing the right thing. They have a well-controlled presence in their chosen media (Petrolicious etc) and don't seem to need to/want to give it The Hard Sell. Seems well judged to me.

You’ve picked up and run with the wrong detail here.

I’m not suggesting they get involved here as I stated earlier, I don’t think their customer base is here at all nor start up a forum. I mentioned all this as Etype UK because getting involved with the owners won us the business and propelled us.

Sounds slightly contradictory but I’m not very articulate unfortunately BUT ignoring simple enquiries and not being open and approachable gives the wrong impression as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve messaged them and I know others too, not all about seats. Absolutely no response. A simple acknowledgment and a decline to give out information (if that is their stance) is all it takes.
