Skidoffs' challenge

Posting in an old but important thread

Sometimes it’s good to look back and read some of the stuff that got posted a while ago, does it still stand? Is it valid? Who posted? Who’s not around anymore? What has been achieved?

I for one like to take stock of things every now and then and ask myself “how did you get on with that”

Over the course of the past 6 years, So many people have told me that I would have been better off spending “all that money” on a turbo or a hybrid, or “why bother” or “My mate did it for £500”, it does get you wondering, doubting even, then every so often you kind of remember what it was all about.

I remember a thread that really triggered it for me, and I have been searching for a while and only found it the other day….it was this one

Most of all it was Albrecht’s encouraging post (40) that really did it for me, discussing Japanese 11 second cars but taming the conversation by discussing their focus
The end result was that it boils down to the quicker you go, the less of a road car you end up with, but the information provided (thanks Alan) made the reality of a 12 second UK car very possible and I am pleased to say that we got there, its taken a long time but the car now runs consistent mid 12’s, is reliable and an absolute joy to drive on the road.
With limited information…..comparing like for like, generally a mid 12 second NA road legal L6S30 appears to be as good as it gets yes there are quicker but they are also more compromised and wouldn’t fair to well in the handling stakes.

Some of them run much quicker (1 in particular is in the 10’s) which is truly astonishing but they are becoming purpose built vehicles which you really wouldn’t want to run around your local drive though with tolerances that require frequent checking.

What’s great to see is that in those 6 years since this thread first kicked off, UK S30 tuning in general has also stepped up a gear.
(Please don’t compare it with Japan or the US as the car numbers, culture and historical factors skew the data massively)

Check out the Hall of fame

Prior to 2005 we only had 4 NA S30’s capable of 13 seconds and all of them high 13’s, today we have recorded 8 NA cars all capable of 13 seconds or better.

Two of them are 12 second NA cars; one of those is a historic vehicle race car and the other, fully road legal.

Also the other Z marques have also begun to come out to play with very credible times from Z31, Z32 and Z33 variants.

All in all we have gone from 30 years of secretive, mystical, smoky black magic (with a hint of bull ****), to a more open-minded and better educated environment where people are less afraid to try something new and not publicly flogged for daring to be different.

Maybe Sean is right for once with his “new era”

So how much are you offering to beat your 12 something ? Bearing in mind that I'd have to lug it all the way over there AND find a dry day...........

Ohh, I like this

Why don’t we let the forum provide some inspiration?

Money is too crass
Pink slips, good but how would you get home and when you did, you would be in so much trouble.

Rules as per the drag challenge
Please read through (may I draw attention to certain criteria such as excessive lightening and consitancy with previous attempts)

Drag Challenge Rules – 2011 season
1. The Class structure will be:
Class 1 is for S30 cars, i.e. all 240Z, 260Z, 260Z 2+2 and any import varieties that are deemed to fit this bracket. No distinction is being made regarding modified or un-modified and anything goes (multiple carbs. of any size, injection, bored and stroked, LSD) as long as the original series engine, normally aspirated, remains the core of the project. No turbo cars – these move into Class 3 – see below. No nitrous oxide injection and no slicks, however. Use of either or both of these two items automatically lifts you into the Super-Mod / Hybrid Class. Cars must be driven to and from the meeting.
Class 2 is for S130 and Z31 normally aspirated models only. Any mods allowed apart from turbos as long as the original engine configuration remains the core concept. No NoS or slicks, etc. – see above.
Class 3 is for forced induction cars from the S30, S130 and Z31 model range – factory turbo, aftermarket turbo or supercharger; this is where you will compete. Any mods allowed, except… Original engine configuration only, otherwise off to Super-Mod. No NoS or slicks, etc. – see above.
Class 4 is for Z32 NA models. All mods allowed as long as no forced induction. No NoS or slicks, etc. – see above.
Class 5 will be for Z32 Twin Turbos – no holds barred; if you have 600bhp you race with the 350bhp guys! As above, however, no NoS and no slicks, etc. – let traction be the equaliser!
Class 6 is for the Z33 and Z34, modified or forced induction. No NoS, no slicks, etc. as above.
Class 7 is for Super Modified cars - essentially it is a combination of Hybrid cars and extreme modded versions running the original engine (engine swaps, enough horsepower to need slicks, NoS if you like). Competitors with triple 48s, NA injection systems, extreme cams etc. will be pleased to know they no longer have to race here as long as their engine configuration is as the manufacturer intended, no NoS and not running slicks. All race prepared cars in regular competition use and any cars trailered to the meeting will run Super Modified.
Cars competing in classes 1 to 6 are expected to conform to all legal requirements of a road-going, MOT'd and taxed vehicle and to have been driven to and from the track, i.e. a typical Clubman's car. Cars brought on trailers / transporters, cars in regular competition use and cars stripped or lightened excessively may be subject to additional scrutiny before being allocated to a class. The decision of the official on the day will be final.
With the introduction of various treaded slick tyres designed specifically for drag racing, it is felt that the additional clause must be added for Classes 1 – 6: “Tyres must be fully street legal, capable of passing an MOT and the car must be capable of driving to the strip on those tyres. DOT marked but non- street legal tyres will be deemed to raise the competitor to Class 7 status.” Check references to Santa Pod’s own Street Eliminator rulings.

Trafford centre 2/2/2006 blimey thats was a long time ago:cheers:

Just the thought conjures up dreadful images

I'll just settle for a drive in the the beast once its done:thumbs:

consitancy ?

Class 1 of course.

A time handicap should be allowed for he who travels furthest (by the road of course) just as those who trailer there get pushed up a class !

A furher handicap should be applied for those with MASSIVE experience until someone can categorically prove that a novice can start exactly as an expert.

And a further time handicap should be applied for those who have any form of launch/extra brake control fitted in their car.

Lightness ? Carbon-kiddy Skiddy ?

Wife-swapping ?

How far do you want the goalposts moving Monsieur?

Why don't you and Steve push your cars up the strip, no launch control, no power handicap, experince won't play a part in leaving the line, make sure they weigh approx. the same with ballast, much fairer all round :)

How fair do YOU want it to be ?

Travel, wear and tear, tiredness, (expense), complete novice (only runs ever back in 1991), old meat and potatoes clutch, foot pedal and gearbox - no trick gimicks......!

Pushing the cars - I'll win so let's forget about that - no sport !

What was the prize you were proposing ?

Quell suprise, I knew there was a hidden agenda to your "sub 11 second" drag racing post, your so predictable:rofl:)

One day the penny will drop, until then keep dreaming

The prize
How about a version of Bens pink hat challenge

How about The Pink Beret Of Shame, whoever loses, has to wear a pink beret to every Z related event for 1 whole year:rofl:

As I said why not let the forum come up with suggestions

Boring prize - pink is IN mate and how many Z club events do I attend ?

I'm still not sure that you could take this as anything but deadly serious. Why don't you come over here for a track-day and I go over to you for a drag-run ? Some clever sod can work out penalties for being slower over the 1/4 mile on a set number of runs (x5 ?) and slower over say, 5 laps.

Distance etc would be equal for each of us before and after each 'event', expense too (although I suspect that yoy have more dsiposable income and free-time than I) and it would be more equal as relates experience although by your words, you've done some track stuff, even taken lessons - no ? You certainly have a knowledgeable 'pit-crew' to fall back upon.

What say you forum - a proper 'challenge' of driver and car ? Or should each also drive the others' car and the mean average of runs and laps calulated ?

Prize ? Big nosh up dinner and taxis home or hotel to avoid 'floating' our licences ?

The forum says for 乱搞 sake get on with it and do something

The prize.........an end to this sniping for all of us? :D

Tell you what if the pair of you can come up with some sort of test against each other like on a track and on a strip I'd put £20 into some sort of prize fund pot if you could expand it to an auto-test on grass and a hill climb I'd double it to £40

Sean, how about you just do it for the fun ?

It would be really nice to see what the car does now - then it gives you a goal and you can see where your money has gone when your car has it's plastic surgery.

However - I do understand the logistics :)

I like the idea of competing on each others turf.

Like a "home" and "away" game. But the challenges would have to be the same.

It would be unfair for a straight line event in the UK and a "bendy" event in France for example.

I will match Steve's offer for a "fair" challenge

F""" the pink beret, winner takes it all , come up with a very fair set of rules & challenges then play for cars, everything to play for :D. Been looking forward to this challenge for a long time now .

/me seeks permission to change the title of this thread to

SeanDezart V SKiddell Challenge

Any objections or better names?

You are a naughty naughty man:lol:
Now that would be the final countdown:thumbs:
but they would both need a pair of these

Challange Idea

How about a Top Gear style challenge, Monsiour and Skiddy are given a number of tasks to perform with their cars, and scored accordingly on their performance, it could include a run up a drag strip and quite equally carry a large flatpack home from Ikea......

And as for sniping boys and girls, lets just remember who keeps digging this up, I just don't like playground bullies
