Posting in an old but important thread
Sometimes it’s good to look back and read some of the stuff that got posted a while ago, does it still stand? Is it valid? Who posted? Who’s not around anymore? What has been achieved?
I for one like to take stock of things every now and then and ask myself “how did you get on with that”
Over the course of the past 6 years, So many people have told me that I would have been better off spending “all that money” on a turbo or a hybrid, or “why bother” or “My mate did it for £500”, it does get you wondering, doubting even, then every so often you kind of remember what it was all about.
I remember a thread that really triggered it for me, and I have been searching for a while and only found it the other day….it was this one
Most of all it was Albrecht’s encouraging post (40) that really did it for me, discussing Japanese 11 second cars but taming the conversation by discussing their focus
The end result was that it boils down to the quicker you go, the less of a road car you end up with, but the information provided (thanks Alan) made the reality of a 12 second UK car very possible and I am pleased to say that we got there, its taken a long time but the car now runs consistent mid 12’s, is reliable and an absolute joy to drive on the road.
With limited information…..comparing like for like, generally a mid 12 second NA road legal L6S30 appears to be as good as it gets yes there are quicker but they are also more compromised and wouldn’t fair to well in the handling stakes.
Some of them run much quicker (1 in particular is in the 10’s) which is truly astonishing but they are becoming purpose built vehicles which you really wouldn’t want to run around your local drive though with tolerances that require frequent checking.
What’s great to see is that in those 6 years since this thread first kicked off, UK S30 tuning in general has also stepped up a gear.
(Please don’t compare it with Japan or the US as the car numbers, culture and historical factors skew the data massively)
Check out the Hall of fame
Prior to 2005 we only had 4 NA S30’s capable of 13 seconds and all of them high 13’s, today we have recorded 8 NA cars all capable of 13 seconds or better.
Two of them are 12 second NA cars; one of those is a historic vehicle race car and the other, fully road legal.
Also the other Z marques have also begun to come out to play with very credible times from Z31, Z32 and Z33 variants.
All in all we have gone from 30 years of secretive, mystical, smoky black magic (with a hint of bull ****), to a more open-minded and better educated environment where people are less afraid to try something new and not publicly flogged for daring to be different.
Maybe Sean is right for once with his “new era”
