What did you do to your Z this week?

used this lockdown time to try to restore this Z31. Luckily, the guy i bought it from Waxoyled and undersealed the entire car, so there was very little rust. I have had it for 13 years, but the last 3 , it has sat on the drive and totally neglected. I have taken the speedo out and put it back in, because the odometer didn't work, but when i put it back in, it started working again. So far, so good and i have added 7 miles to the clock. The speedo and odometer gave up the ghost about 4 years ago with about 58,700 on the clock. It has done less than 200 miles in the last 4 years, so i need to go for a decent run, now that it is working.
I have spent the last 3 weeks tidying up the bodywork and it's starting to look a damn site better than it did. Got a problem now with paint suppliers, because they are on lockdown. I need a windscreen wiper controller, if anyone has got one for sale. I am going to try to add updated photo's. Hope to get to a meet up north when all this lockdown stuff is finished.View attachment 38239 View attachment 38239 View attachment 38239 View attachment 38240 View attachment 38241

Are those vents at the front supposed to be there? They look like some something of an MG rover.

I didn't build this thing, i am just keeping it looking good and legal. Apparently, the grills are off an Almera, but would require a whole new nose cone to get rid of them. I am already looking at a blow-over to regularise the 40 different colours of red. The question on the grills is down to The Clash: Should i stay or should i go??This is a poll down to the people on this site. See what everyone says in 7 days time. There doesn't seem to be a rush.lol

The real question is do YOU like them?

Personally I'd look to change the nose and the rear spoiler for something more in keeping with the design of the car, but if you're happy with it, just get it driven!

I'm with Makesy on this. If you can get a replacement nose cone so much the better, but a job for another time - esp if you can't get any paint!

Pretty impressed with that vinyl wrap - tell us more - suppliers etc - looks great! My 944 would benefit a lot from some of that detail work.

Finally got around to fitting a led light in my map light. Better than stock but I'd prefer brighter. I did try a led cob strip which is super bright but unfortunately too large for the housing and it did not like being shortened! I now have a plan to use a 4.5volt version from a cheap Aldi torch which is smaller and should fit the housing but is still super bright.

When I did this I found the brighter was better for me looking for things at night but equally the spread of light is narrower if you truly compare it ;)

The courtesy light being LED made it actually useful - the original was a bit like a candle at night.

Based on careful research and precise calculations, I carried out a complex process of deduction (complete guesswork) and found the right wire for my horn!

The result...

Beep beep :)

Cheap as chips from Rockauto!

I guess it's better than nothing...... just! :p

I want to replace mine, as although they still work, they look sh*t and quite rusty in places, i have looked at the ones on Rockauto, did you buy ones specifically for the Z?

It is pretty rubbish, isn't it?

Better than nothing for now. I can swap it to "la cucaracha" later!

I bought the SMP HN17T high tone horn, though I remember it being cheaper than £13 at the time.

Whilst it's listed for a 280z, it would fit most anything. It comes with a lead for earthing, and I imagine would swap in for the stock one easily enough.

When I first got my car, the horn relay would click but give no sound (I had no horn installed!) so I thought I best sort that out. I've no idea what a stock Z horn should sound like!

Ah ok thanks, i was considering the flatter ones without the scroll horn part, as that is more like the original.

On the basis of your clip though, i will try the low tone first, if that's ok I'll add a second, maybe a high tone as i believe that's what the 2 originals are, one of each.

This is what it looks like fitted in mine.

Happy to help :)

Experimented with a different led light for the map light using a 4.5v led cob strip from a cheap Aldi inspection lamp using a voltage regulator set to 4.5 volts. Unfortunately the led seems to draw too many amps for the regulator and it blew. So for now I'll stick with the single led bulb in the pic.
