What did you do to your Z this week?

Someone told me it is illegal to tow with a rope now, is that true?

Edit: apparently still legal. But only to a safe place, not 100 miles or so ...

Indeed, wouldn't want to be towed for more than a few miles via a rope! any further and you should really be using a proper recovery vehicle.

I wouldn't consider towing any more than onto a tow truck or out of a track gravel pit. Tow hitches are mandatory on racetracks. I just consider it to be a handy addition and have tried to make these very discrete so they don't look out of place. Just consider if you break down, how is your car going to be recovered? A factory standard zed will have both tow hitches and tie down hooks but are often missing or in the wrong place once you fit a spoiler.

I took the dash out this week to sort a leaky heater matrix and have a go at fixing the cracks on top from the Cali sun, Wasn't as bad as I thought getting it out ,which was nice , used a plastic bumper filler then some high build primer, still needs some more work though,

Also a good friend dropped off a present for doing some machining work on his old BSA engine,
A 123 distributor now with blue tooth and vac port with a programmable curve for both, ment to be great for sorting out the weber flat spot

Anyone use one of them ? need to have a look at curves now and work out the how to sort the vacuum signal

There's several with the 123 distributor. I'd suggest 10 deg at 500 rpm 18 at 750, 25 at 1500 and 35 at 3000 for your map.
And not bother with the vacuum advance.

To clarify, I'd not bother with vac advance with triples. It's fiddly because you need vacuum from most/all cylinders and I think most carbs don't have vacuum ports.

That makes perfect sense - I guess you'd get a very nasty fluttery advance.

Don't worry Jonbills, Ali's going to man up and get a set :)

When I'm all growed up, I want to be just like you Mr Franky!!! But not before I manage to affix all those parts I've amassed!

My new 151's have vac ports on them , my old 4's dont though, from what I have read it's only for motorway cruising to get the MPG up a bit really,
I will try it without for now and see how it goes, got the dyno booked for a few weeks

That's true but it does a bit more than that too - it helps keep you temps down at idle and part throttle. I found when I fixed mine that it also made a smoother more responsive transition from off / part throttle to WOT.

I’ve been in touch with him too actually - just got sidetracked with numerous other bits and bobs and haven’t placed the order yet.

Yesterday I finished removing the other smog pump related gubbins and also the intakes. Now down to the bare manifold sitting on the side of the block. Do I do my bit for the balance of trade with the EU by buying one of Sean's headers and systems or keep with the stock manifold for a bit ... still undecided ... al comes down to available £££

The manifolds came off to facilitate the removal of the last pieces of the smog system, namely the pipes into the exhaust manifold.
