What did you do to your Z this week?

On Friday, a nice man from Magic Windshields (definitely not Autoglass!) came and took my windscreen out.
His name might have been Cary Glass. But it probably wasn't.

Not so much what I did to the Z than bought more tools!!! This is my new something exciting tool: a dial gauge for finding TDC with the head on, using the spark plug hole.

Interesting tool Ali. So I assume it is not just a DTI. I’m guessing it measures lateral movement? I’ve seen the finger type but not one that goes into a plug hole.

Where did you get it and how much?

Well Johny, it just goes up and down - it's a normal dial gauge with a threaded hole in the shaft - the brass bit you can see screws into it and the whole thing sits inside the spark plug looking thing with a bolt on the side to clamp it.

I read up on a lot of motorcycle sites that they use this type of device but I also assume the spark plug on a motorbike head is more vertical so let's see how well it works on the Z when I next to the valve lash.

Bought from eBay, £27 link below ....

I took out the dash because I need to overhaul the heater. I planned to remove the fan and try to extract it that way, but when my car was converted to RHD they sealed the fan in and it wouldn't budge. I was reluctant to force it out because it's nicely watertight and I didn't need the hassle of trying to seal it again. It also gives me a chance to check out the bulkhead and wiring before the car goes in for a respray.

I started stripping out the rear lights, bumper, etc. too

Been playing with the welded N42 again. Marked up with a bunch of measurements courtesy of the very thorough Autoworks L-gata tuning book from Japan and my Kameari 90.5mm head gasket to provide the guidelines for combustion chamber shaping. Got started on a chamber with great care and my carbide-equipped dremel. Think precision sculpting. Basically, this head will end up as my homebrew version of a Kameari SPL head...

Finally got rid of the rear bumper supports which have been bugging me. Meant dropping the tank out a bit which seemed to be a fine art but all went relatively well. Looks loads better!

how much did you skim that head Richie? Or has it been welded?
It’s welded and skimmed. That work had already been done in Japan when I bought it. It’s the classic Japanese-style welded big port head format, as commonly used over there for 300hp+ 3.1L and up engines. Skim is around 2mm. Chambers, as shown in the photos, were left rough, although the race size 46/38 seats had been installed already.

The chamber I’ve worked on will be left as is without too much additional enlargement or finishing work until my burette and stand arrive so that I can accurately cc it. The others will be matched and then all mirror polished. The intake seats need more cutting work though- the extra welded material around the sides interfered with the cutter and the top 30deg cut is missing currently. The place that did the work also felt that the intake valves were too big for the seats although I know this to be incorrect - they are definitely the big seats for those 46mm valves. I think it was just a more aggressive setup than they were used to dealing with. Thus, I’m going to get a “second opinion” and have the three angle cut completed elsewhere, which should be easier with the finished chambers and unshrouded valves.

Once done, I can begin mock up and look at lash pad size etc. Still need a new valve spring retainer to replace the one missing from my NISMO set though.

I had Autoglass booked for today to come and take my windscreen out so I could do a little repair on the A pillar.

They just called to suck their teeth and suggest "that type will break" and I should claim break/replace from my insurance company instead.

So I cancelled that and I'm thinking again. And cursing Autoglass.
never use Autoglass its all about trying to sell you a new screen... A friend works there all the stories are true!
