What did you do to your Z this week?

My kickplates were looking a bit unloved having given nearly 50 years of service so I thought it was time get out a metal polishing kit I bought at one of the NEC shows a few years ago.

This is the TEMP control button for the dealer-fitted air conditioning system. The compressor isn’t under the bonnet anymore although I do have it, and I am leaving it off but keeping the stuff that’s still in the passenger footwell. So this control knob is of no use but I’m going to keep it in unwired as it’s nice and add my heated seat buttons either side of it.

I was struggling to find somewhere to put them as I want to change the modern switches the heat pads came with for old Lucas-style ones that roughly match the other interior switches.

These switches have a 32mm black stalk which looks good I think. The old Lucas switch I found in a box in my garage is off one of my dad’s cars he had in the 60s, not sure which one. It’s only an On - Off though so not suitble.

Dixie updates to follow in the other thread, but had a delivery from Japan of a pair of items I’ve been after for ages for my JDM Fairlady Z - the correct front indicator/parking light lenses. I’ve had the units for years, but only had one correct lens with the partition. Problem solved!

No idea when I’ll get around to fitting them, with that Z in storage/Carcoon. I’ll fit them with just the indicators active first and then track down the snipped connections for the parking lights and put a switch back in later on.

Had too much skin on my knuckles - so investigated why the wipers were stuck across the screen and not working - Ive never used them since i got the car and lived with the them being part across the screen.

Motor wasnt working and looked to have heat damage - mechanism was siezed solid on the driver side.

Had a spare 2nd hand motor and mechanism which i'd part refurbed - so touched up the paint under the cowl , fitted them and seem to be working ( although the intermittant wipe is a bit erratic) .

Lovely colour that blue. No outside mirror?

Thanks Rob- it’s actually a Renault metallic blue - I think it suits it.

Two wing mounted mirrors either side provide some rear vision. I have a wide angled rear view inside attached to the original too.

Ooops, missed the wing mirrors! I just saw the door bungs.

Are the wiper 'posts' ok i.e. not seized.

There is a relay on the side of the wiper motor for the intermittent action - perhaps the contacts or connections are dodgy?

I couldn’t think what to call them - but yes the wiper post on the driver side was seized solid .

I’ve soaked it in WD and and anti seize and used some gentle persuasion but it’s not budged. I had the spare mechanism that was cleaned up - lubed etc. so stuck that in While the other was out. It’s in better nick than the old one.

I should check the relay - thanks for the tip. They work fine on ‘normal’ operation , but seem to stop in a semi random pattern in intermittant.

Clutch pedal is really far down on my car, but it drove ok, then this weekend I started having some problems engaging reverse and first gear. My clutch pedal was really close to the floor, and wasn't fully disengaging the clutch. I was often having problems with gears grinding when shifting too.
Didn't really care before since I'm changing the whole drivline very soon in my car anyway. But now it driveability was affected.

Bleed the clutch a few weeks ago, and there was no air... so that wasn't the issue. Stuck my head in the footwell and beheld, the locking nut for the pedal adjustment wasn't tightened. So I adjusted the screw and then clamped the nut. What a difference! Should have done this a long time ago. a 5 min job changed the car a lot. No more clattering sound from the clutch in neutral either. I thought the clutch was just noisy on these cars :D

What a PITA it is to get this panel off ...

Mind you, once off and loosened up for the first time in I don’t know how long, the workings are a joy to see ...
