And, on reflection, I have a 1970-built Fairlady Z-L which was given a 'W' suffix UK registration number by the DVLA at time of import, a 1972-built Fairlady 240ZG that was given an 'N' suffix UK number at time of import, and a 1971-built Fairlady 240ZG that was given an "Age Related" 'used Import' 'K' suffix UK number at time of import. So I think UK registration numbers are a moveable feast anyway.....

As for "UK chassis numbers" ( HS30 & RS30 prefixes etc ), spare a thought for the situation you would face if you were to import a similarly-prefixed car from outside the UK ( HS30s from Japan, Australia, NZ, and RS30s from Australia & NZ, for example ). The person applying for the first UK registration will be expected to prove the build date of the car to the DVLA at time of first registration.

DVLA's natural inclination has been to guard against people wanting to give their car a younger registration identity ( theoretically to make it worth more ), whereas many old Z owners have actually been preoccupied with making their car seem older than it really is......... :smash:

I had a 1973 Canadian import 240z this was put on a W plate when it came into the country, this was the current new reg at the time 1980 I think it was imported, the lady that owned it brought it with her when she move over to the uk because she had owned it since new & did not want to sell it, it was put into storage a short time later for 20 years. I bought it about 9 years ago but had to sell it to fund another project, I sold it to a friend in north wales, he has fully restored it to a high standard & left everything original, its still lhd because he wanted to leave it as it came from the factory, its also finished in the original met blue with original white interior. He did however manage to get rid of the W plate through the DVLA & replace it with an age related one it is now an L reg.

I bet whoever buys it, won't acknowledge 'stuck-up' 350Z owners!!

I think people have mis-understood my thread. I was referring to me a 350 driver being 'blanked' by other 350 drivers when I waved at them to acknowledge that we both drive a nice car. When I'm in my 240 I don't wave at 350s.

I realise now that it's a generation thing - from now on I'm not waving at anybody (but how miserable is that?) my generation was the best  People don't acknowledge each other any more they just stab them or steal their car.

I see 'Ringing' as this:

I buy a rust free LHD, put my bulhead etc in it, spray it red. Scrap my old 240 and pretend nothing has changed.

Shame because that would be a good car.

I know of two 260's that are registered as K reg 240's, one looks a standard late 260 it is restored to a very high standard the other is early 260 it has 240 rear lights.

If you where to buy a rust free shell & bolt all the parts off your onto it is this really ringing or are you just reshelling your car ?

P.S. I don't think there are a huge amount of rung early Z's about in the uk.

Bloody LL !

It all offsets the import costs my friend.

Next stunning fact - over the years, more than 50 240Z have been imported from the States....count that there are just over 150 in the UK, that's 1/3 of all cars came from Obama-land - better check under your hood at YOUR chassis number.............

with most car clubs you would end up with less and less cars over time, surely it is better to have more cars coming onto the Z scene wether they are LHD ,imports or RHD conversions.

Another clean Z on the roads is worth 300 rotten baskets lying in fields and damp garages !

Like I said....

Unless they become so valuable (as per real GTOs) in which case they will always be worth rebuilding.........hang on though....if one is completely rebuilt (following a track accident etc) what is original......sort of broom stick and head syndrome......!

With just the bulkhead and dash changed, suddenly a 'ringer' appears to be much, more original.
