What to buy? 240/260/280

Yes, he also has a business selling restored citroen vans. I think he just puts stuff on his site as free advertsing, i didnt see it through that, i found it on car and classic site.

As far as im aware, it was a private sale regardless of his other business interests.

What''s going to happen to your 'broken' gearbox ?

RIDDLER, I was sent those pictures.

Not sure why this discussion is continuing. The buyer is happy to change the box that the restorer, who he didn't buy the car from, is supplying as what appears to be a good will gesture. Why all the fuss and why start an argument.

At the end of the day, the car and a lot of the components are 40 years old so how could you warrant any of these parts. Your pretty lucky the restorer has replaced the box FOC and I think you know that.

How much warranty is usually given on second hand cars in private sales?

Absolutely right.

100% Correct the buyer is saying he is satisfied with the way the restorer has reacted by changing the box even though as I understand it he was not the seller of the car
Even the original poster has posted up

"Woah woah, hold your horses guys.

It was a private sale for nowhere near the £32k quoted above. The previous owner (nice guy) purchased the car from the builder at a show in Europe last year - and never drove it apart from to the petrol station in the morning i collected it. He wasnt to know any issues were apparent and there is nothing he can do about it - i didnt even let him know as i dont see a point.

The builder is sending out a replacement gearbox WHICH, myself and a couple of mates are going to install (well, i'll be making the tea and might hand them a spanner...)

So, no dramas, everyone is being nice.

Maybe people should just leave it as it is as maybe it could effort possible other gestures of good will in the future

'Stunning work' indeed.

Oh c'mon.. Car been sold ~ year ago, to the owner who drove it, registered it, and kept in in the garage.. I drove the car after rebuild ~ 200km max, before rebuild - drove it for like few kms. Gearbox was working flawlessly, and there was no problems with it at all...

And now you are trying tyo bite in my shoe? Yea right, so i should give a lifetime warranty i guess on all the works that we do, right?

Even so, its totally not my fault, i still feel stupid that Chris was so happy with the car and on the very first day this all happen... I know Alan pretty well, and i know he aint did anything stupid with the car, and barely drove it at all! But its been sitting more then driving, and this gearbox problem might been just waiting around the corner to happen...

I proposed Chris to help with the gearbox, as i do have quite a few spare ones, and i know to get it rebuild here would cost x5 cheaper then in UK, so its not a big deal for me to get a new box sent to him, and take the old one from him with minimum costs and maximum help... I could just say oh well - go find a shop and fix it, as it should be 'not my business'...

And big kudos to you fella for doing that
Keep the goodwill and customer satisfaction going after all "it is nice to be nice" and always what goes around comes around:thumbs:
I bow to you sir :flyingpig:

Actually, I wasn't biting your shoe. I might have a little nibble at it now though...
Heartwarming as it is, something about this whole story isn't really adding up.

Here's a straight question for you: What was the situation with the (now malfunctioning) gearbox in the car? Had it been completely rebuilt, partly rebuilt, just 'checked', or what? Of course, there's no obligation to answer if you don't want to.

The sales blurb on the 'hvanworld.com' website (where the car was obviously just staying as a 'guest' ;)) mentioned ".... rebuilt totally to the most exacting standards and cannot be faulted in any way. Every nut and bolt is new or replated..." so perhaps the fault is a little surprising in that context? Stupid claims to make in the first place, in my opinion...

The original point I was making was that there's a marked contrast here in reactions to situations depending on the characters and businesses involved. Some people get cut a lot of slack, some none at all. It's all about loyalties and affiliations. Already evident in your case, Romas.

A multi-faceted die Alan - it depends upon the conditions of the sale I believe - private or trade and reactions here differed depending upon how and when the facts came out.

Refreshing to see a supplier wanting the end customer happy and publicly taking the effort to do so.

Any classic-car rebuild with limited 'test' mileage upon it will have teething problems - almost inevitable, the car didn't do much mileage before being sold to Alan who apparently didn't do much more and (this is speculation, nothing more) was perhaps over-enthusiastic in the restoration claims.

Let's not turn this into a 'them and us' situation on another agenda :

1) you suggested that the current owner bond with the car and do it himself - as close as he can with mates that is what is going to happen.

2) the original restorer is providing the gearbox - nice goodwill gesture and imho shows that he cares for his cars and customers

3) Alan hasn't won any good publicity

Job done (nearly but soon in any case).

As i said in my last post, im happy, its fine, no-one is at fault and Romas is going well beyond what he needs to do as he is a top guy. And Alan was not to know at all - in fact, he still doesnt know as i dont see the point.

So lets just leave this here and i'll report back when she's up and running again. :)

Suns out, go drive your cars! :) :) :driving:

NO! there's salt on the roads

Your council must have lots of spare cash !

Sure I've only seen it twice this year here in Devon and hope it's not on road today as I just dropped off a super nice original paint Lancia Beta Volumex for a dent repair and those with long memories or teeth ;) will remember this marques legendary reputation for rust, even worse than Datsuns

Off thread topic but probably for the best ;)

Guy Croft, the Italian engine guru

135bhp standard output and car feels pretty quick, similar to std Z performance.
What did Guy Croft do with the engine in yours ?
Did it run factory supercharger or modded ?

Beta volumex is another card I'd love to own. Haven't seen one (or any other beta) for years.

Head/cams/valves/balanced/supercharger stuff.

It cost the previous owner a good amount of cash.
