Not sure why this discussion is continuing. The buyer is happy to change the box that the restorer, who he didn't buy the car from, is supplying as what appears to be a good will gesture. Why all the fuss and why start an argument.
At the end of the day, the car and a lot of the components are 40 years old so how could you warrant any of these parts. Your pretty lucky the restorer has replaced the box FOC and I think you know that.
How much warranty is usually given on second hand cars in private sales?

"Woah woah, hold your horses guys.
It was a private sale for nowhere near the £32k quoted above. The previous owner (nice guy) purchased the car from the builder at a show in Europe last year - and never drove it apart from to the petrol station in the morning i collected it. He wasnt to know any issues were apparent and there is nothing he can do about it - i didnt even let him know as i dont see a point.
The builder is sending out a replacement gearbox WHICH, myself and a couple of mates are going to install (well, i'll be making the tea and might hand them a spanner...)
So, no dramas, everyone is being nice.
'Stunning work' indeed.
Oh c'mon.. Car been sold ~ year ago, to the owner who drove it, registered it, and kept in in the garage.. I drove the car after rebuild ~ 200km max, before rebuild - drove it for like few kms. Gearbox was working flawlessly, and there was no problems with it at all...
And now you are trying tyo bite in my shoe? Yea right, so i should give a lifetime warranty i guess on all the works that we do, right?
The original point I was making was that there's a marked contrast here in reactions to situations depending on the characters and businesses involved. Some people get cut a lot of slack, some none at all. It's all about loyalties and affiliations.
Suns out, go drive your cars!
NO! there's salt on the roads
Your council must have lots of spare cash !
Sure I've only seen it twice this year here in Devon and hope it's not on road today as I just dropped off a super nice original paint Lancia Beta Volumex for a dent repair and those with long memories or teeth will remember this marques legendary reputation for rust, even worse than Datsuns
I once had a volumex with a guy croft engine.
Lovely thing.
Off thread topic but probably for the best
Guy Croft, the Italian engine guru
135bhp standard output and car feels pretty quick, similar to std Z performance.
What did Guy Croft do with the engine in yours ?
Did it run factory supercharger or modded ?
