What did you do to your Z this week?

The blue car lives once more so I been driving it a bit this week. First long trip out is to Bicester this sunday.

The main work I've done on it is:
Replacement standard engine.
Complete car rewire with an ezwiring loom and new engine loom.
Create cooling ducting to enclose the radiator.
Repaint the fibreglass dash.
Clean up the engine bay by welding up unwanted holes and repainting.

The car still needs quit a bit of TLC with rust appearing in a few places plus I need to change the roof. This will probably get started once the silver car is back from paint and usable.
Would love to see some photos John! Especially the radiator work.

When you say standard engine - is that an L series or a standard 1/2JZ?

L6 engine?

Took the Z out for a test since fitting the new rad - it runs cooler and doesn’t get to the half way mark (and this is without my constantly variable electric fans) what is most noticeable is how quickly the temps drop as soon as you start moving. It shows how much more heat a 4 row rad dissipates. I would say the guage sits on average a good 15°-20° lower than it used to in like for like conditions.

Next I need to modify the fan shroud more to fit properly and make a bracket to fix the electric fans to the rad panel, rather than the delicate rad core with zip ties - never liked doing that to the old rad but the new one being aluminium is more delicate.

Managed to burn my arm on the radiator, enough so that it was still tingly several hours later!

Was checking she started ok, she did, after yet another year of zero use, and that the rear brakes weren't stuck on after realising last week i had probably left the handbrake on, i had! no issues though thankfully.

Hopefully she's off to Fourways, on a trailer, in the near future for remedial brake booster/MC work, install of electric power steering, Zstory exhaust fitting and probably a little tuning.

Floors getting there slowly after I decided to redo it. All my own fault. The finish was dreadful and I couldn’t have lived with it for the next 20 years! So being redone in preparation for my car’s return … it’s just been delayed by a week or two!

That’s a nightmare but on the plus side we all know where to come when we want under seal scrapping of our next projects 😉😂

Yes, its still a 1JZ engine but in standard 320ish HP form. I've boxed around the rad/intercooler, out to the bonnet lip/grill so all the air must go through the rad. I previously had cooling issues so was keen to fix that this time around.

went out Sunday in Z still in primer but she useable and was dry :) be painted this week

met up with local lad 10mins away bought the LHD 240z was on here advertised a bit ago

Unfortunately it’s that time of year again. I’ve put my Z away for the winter having now owned it for a year. What a year though with the car. Its everything I wanted it to be and a bit more. I’ve traveled around Europe doing two and a half thousand miles and it never missed a beat ( apart from the same fault code popping up a few times for the Lambda sensor and that was nothing serious) Even at 12 years old it still turns heads as it looks more expensive than it really is.
I even got a “ your cars sick” from a pair of teenagers. I said I know I think it’s the lambda sensor but I will get it sorted soon 🤷‍♂️
I’ve been and met with other Z owners on the forum and had a great day out in Leeds so all in all a good year owning my Z.
Just before I put it away I had the Calipers painted by a firm in Manchester.
I haven’t posted for a while as I’ve not been great but I’m getting back to full fitness now. I hope you are all well out there in Z land and thankyou to you all for the help and advice you have given me.
Roll on March 24 !

Was good to see it in the flesh!

I took the Z out for one of the final trips out for the year to Bicester. Looks like I'll be going away a lot in Oct / Nov / Dec, and the weather gods was shining.

280zx internally regulated alternator swapped in, in preparation for my imminent electric power steering install at Fourways.

New unit puts out a healthy 14.4v at the battery, old one was 13.5v
The voltmeter is nice and steady now at 14v whereas the old one had it wandering between 12v and 13v, don't know if that was the alternator, the regulator or both!
The tab for the adjuster bolt fitting must be in a slightly different position, or perhaps the pulley is a slightly different diameter (i didn't check before boxing the old one up) because i had to fit a slightly longer, by about 15mm V belt, other wise the alternator wouldn't swing out enough to fit the adjuster at its minimum length. Luckily i had a couple of different belts ordered at different times from rock auto, you know the drill 'I'm ordering something i actually need so I'll also just get a belt and thermostat and gasket as well' just because! ;)
