What did you do to your Z this week?

Boom boom.

Being serious. A couple of years. Got 95% of the parts to build it as I want. So it’s just time, which is in short supply.

Mostly looking forward to building the engine and hearing it through the beautifully made exhaust.

I’m a bit annoyed how quick Alan’s ZG has progressed

Thinking about it, when I started I couldn’t think of another orange car on here!

Blem units or the pukka ones?

Me? Nothing, as usual. Oh no, I tell a lie. I put some more stuff on the roof and pushed it on the dollies forward a couple of feet.

Today the Z went in for a tune :)

I really lucked into going to BD Engineering because, whilst I didn't know it at the time, Andy does a lot of the rolling road tuning for Fourways in Sevenoaks. He knows his Z cars!

I had a little panic when #2 cylinder didn't perform as well as the others during a pressure test but Andy whipped the rocker cover off and corrected the valve clearances. All good and job done. Phew!

Here a few pics from today:

Continued with my swap from fuel injection to Su's and dizzy on my silver rat look car. Went to the workshop tonight and hooked up my AFR stuff to tweak the carbs a little. got it running pretty close to my target AFR of 14.7. Just need to go for a drive and see what I get on load and cruising.

I'll stick a vid up soon.

Been for that drive yet John. It will be interesting to hear about the comparison?

Yes Rob, I've driven it quite a bit. It drive nice enough but not a patch on FI. I really miss not being able to add advance where you need it and get the AFR spot on under different driving conditions. I can no-longer pull cleanly from 1k in 5th gear. Having said all this it's still fun to drive.

So John do you think Fi gave more power for your mods/state of tune?

Yeh I can imagine the drive-ability is better with FI.

I THINK with carbs if you want it to pull low-down it has to be rich.

Rob - With carbs and FI the maximum power will be pretty much the same if both are setup correctly. With FI and ECU controlled spark there are lots of gains to be had with extra power in mid to low revs plus drivability is far easier to achieve. I think you are right with regard to carbs needing to run richer to get the low down pull. I've been trying to get the carbs as fuel efficient as the FI by setting the AFR's the same and that's where I'm going wrong.

Matt - When I came up with the design for my cage I stole a lot of ideas from others I had seen. With the triangulation between strut and hoop, I've followed the line down through the door bar and straight to the front hoop junction with the bottom of the A pillar.

Almost finished fixing up the fuel system - the tank should be going on tonight.

Also, met @Geoff-R today who kindly collected some Z parts from @pmac for me on his way up to Yorkshire.

Money well spent this Z club membership - I feel I'm getting some good advice, building up my knowledge of the car and its history and meeting some great people along the way!

Popped in to FOURWAYS ENGINEERING in Borough Green, Kent to see progress on my Fairlady 240ZG. All panels are now painted and attached. Looks great and I'm very happy with their work.

Always something interesting to see down there too. Today no less than TEN S30-series Zs in the workshops. One of them an original, one owner, UK market HS30 with a four digit chassis number (rare car!) and another an early 1970 (probably January or February) Fairlady Z432:
