What did you do to your Z this week?

The paintwork is amazingly good. I just know I'm going to scratch it while working on it...

Whats your plan long-term to protect the paint? PPF might be a good solution and the best time to do it is when the paint is unmarked

Went in the garage today and fired up my Nissan and metro, left them running just make sure everything is still working etc. Would have gone for a quick spin but the weather has been horrible today.

I thought I'd tackle a nice easy job today...............replace the leaking heater matrix!!!!!

I noticed yesterday some water running down the side of the tunnel. Not much but there was a drip every few seconds. It was dripping from both sides. Took the lower air ducts off and found lots of water inside so came to the conclusion that the matrix had a hole in it. As I like a bit of a challenge I thought I'd remove as little as I could get away with. Removing the fan gave me easier access to remove all the heater hoses and water control valve. The side panel is held on with 5 self tapping Philips screw around it perimeter. 2 are easy to remove with a small philips racked driver. To get access to the other 3 I removed the 6 10mm bolts holding the heater box to the car. With the box movable I could get these 3 out. After disconnecting the lower vent control rod, the side cover will pull off. Mine was very tight and needed a bit of levering at the bottom to get it unstuck. You then have access to the heater matrix which just pulls out. Once on the bench I pressurized it to 15psi just to confirm where it was leaking and it held pressure. Well that was a waist of 3 hours. I've now come to the conclusion that the back hose could have been leaking and the water was running along the pipe and into the heater which is why I couldn't see it. Putting it all back together didn't take long but I now need a new hose. This is the last original hose on the car so needed changing anyway. This is listed as the heater outlet hose. I have quite a few nissan inlets but no outlet hoses. Anyone know of a source for these?

Welcome back John, haven't seen you for a long time.

I need one too but was going to wait until I needed a few more items before I ordered. Happy to add to my order and share postage if that’s the route you want to take

Nice, what paint colour did you use where did you get the dome?

Hey
The dome was 3D printed from a design on thingiverse (If you need one I can do one for you ?! just PM me )
The paint was just something I found on amazon that I was experimenting with

This might surprise you, but I don't really *want* to have any modern, high-tech paint protection systems on the car. If anything the paint is too 'new' and cheesy for my eye at the moment, and I'm hoping it will soon start to age and take on a more natural patina. The original paintwork on these cars was nothing like as dense and shiny as these modern paints look.

Of course, I don't want to add any careless scratches, chips or dings while I'm putting it back together, but I'm totally happy with the natural evolution of stone chips and other assorted road rash that an old car would have built up. I'll be happiest when it is the automotive equivalent of my favourite pair of vintage jeans.

Has Ant moved back here or was he just visiting.
Just visiting, though he still owns Dowsett cars which makes the Mx 5 based TIPO184 car which is loosely based on the 1938 Alfa Romeo 138 grand prix car.

He's still based in California and going out with Rene Zellweger
