Franklin Mint 1970 Datsun 240Z

being on the nice side are you saying Mr K wasn't a good influence? He is sales remember and that's what you are saying when you say "sales don't make anything". Its great you know these I know some of the next generation but throwing negative statements around straight off means people won't respect the background knowledge you have. I'm sorry I not so cared with the exact history as its only told from a person's point of view. I still think my point is valid

I don't know enough about anything to give an opinion that might stand up.

Saying that, he helped Nissan shift the volume required, which was important to help generate cash. The irony being that the market he looked after had the softest spec of any of the domestic versions, so as important as the US market think they were, it's a odds with where all the factory efforts went regarding racing, also none of the homologation models went there, which given my understanding of how Japanese industries mark out truely important markets just shows their feelings towards it.

Lets not forget it was designed as a RHD car.

Luckily for us, the core component of the cars exist across all markets, so its possible to revise a car closer to one of the better spec/setup market cars.

Tell me about it!!

I personally don’t want the car to go for much more than it’s at. It just points to how strange the us auction market is, given the 432 was 85k. Sad really. Also there’s so many cars there still. I’m not a fan of having cars over valued(money wise), I’d like to see them valued more in terms of understanding

SIX FIGURES THOUGH!?

Theres only 2 people in the world that'd pay that, both happen to be bidding, ft seems there 2 ends of a 3 way that's happening right in front of everyone on BAT.

Speaking of which, Love Island starts tonight, 9pm, ITV2. Less chance of a 'love in' on this show than between some on BAT.

I'm not so sure about ego at that price point - from what I'm led to believe the winning bidder has some serious cash, so his 'ego' could have really made a point if wanted.

That's around 85K GBP - still cheaper than an MZR car and much more original. Lets just see this as a continuation of a trend, early S30's in original condition ARE rare and will command a decent premium for any collector.

(I know MZR demand more money because of the modernisation and development they put in the car which is why their prices are 'up there' but some people want originality).

I was always told that only an auction can give the true price of a car....who were the bidders btw ?

Chris is right - it aint original.

Was it bought as an investment - it certainly won't be seen on the roads again then. I'd prefer a decent build for say £60k and get out there and enjoy it.

Its far from original Dan, its been restored, not a factory restoration either. There were 100% three 'ego's' bidding on it, they've actually bid on most of the sellers cars.

Its not 85k Dan. Its more like 100k................

Do we have any members with MZR cars? Everything I see is about the awesome cars that are for sale, not the awesome cars that have been bought. But very possible I've missed something.... I'm not attentive to that sort of thing.

It may be seen again (although driven on public roads in the States ? - unlikely I reckon).
Larry from Atlanta (the buyer) is aiming to get the car shown at Pebble Beach concours. If the entry is accepted, you can be sure it will be making the 2500 mile journey as a 'trailer queen' or maybe an 'air freight' queen if his pockets are as deep as common perception.
If it wins or is placed, expect the value to rise again substantially.

Jon - I know several people with MZR cars and MZR are currently very busy people with more than several orders.

We have a 240Z showing at the end of this month in the Peter Auto Chantilly concours d'élégance.

Crazy isn’t it. Especially given the ‘love in’ between bidders.

It’s ego that pushed the price that high. Not the car or value of an s30.

Yes. Weird way to take part in an auction. Endlessly talk-up the seller's previous auctions, then telegraph your intentions to 'win' this auction at almost any cost whilst also talking it up.

That's not a strategy that makes sense in any other auction format I'm aware of. Normally a serious buyer keeps it on the down-low and - if he's sensible - has a figure in mind (set by fully understanding the item he's buying as well as the current state of the market) which he will not exceed. That's not the case here, despite the buyer telling all and sundry that he's a 'car collector' and just sold a "consignment" (ugh...) of other miscellaneous cars that he appears to have fallen out of love with. He's a relative newbie to the early Z world, judging by an example of one of his other Zs he doesn't have very good taste [yet] and the car he has just bought would lose points in any concours worth its salt because of better understanding of what 'factory original' really means, and a changed philosophy between now and when it was originally restored.

There will be a lot of hoo-ha about this sale price, but it may have as much negative effect as positive.
