foaming at the mouth..

back to your origional question!!
many 'works' rally teams in the 70's filled cills and voids with expanding foam.
reasons lightweight, adds a lot of strenght to a cill section. they however were in the enviable position of not having to weld sh*t to sh*t in the future

Ah.. Could it be that my car has a bit of hidden history.. Answers my question though. I will try and work round it. Or through it. Its sortable anyway. I have a feeling I will be taking the sills off. Pmac has a pair and some other bits {I hope} that I am collecting.

good answer thanks

If you want to end up with a really nice, original, unmolested shell then you need to import a car like Moggy240 has and leave it LHD.

thats what i was going to say ,less hassle and keeps another 240z 260z on the UK roads

BUT it's NOT RHD & ANOTHER UK car ends up as spares.
On the other hand get a US import & use the bulkhead & you've got the rest of it for spares.

You've missed the point Mr Ex - we're not allowed to cut up anymore UK Zs - they must be saved - like the planet, never mind what it costs !

I have a UK 240Z over here - I'll post up some photos and anyone who wants it can pay me €1100 - tax exempt '71 car ! Effing bargain.

.......you think so ? It just leaves a UK S30 to quietly rot away 'cept in this case.

I am making sure that this UK Z does not rot away.. Its coming back.

Welding coming on.. just started the end of the front chassis leg.. found something to weld to... rear footwell !! lol:rofl:

It was said "tongue in cheek" I'm looking at it from both angles, But I personally would restore a UK car......... But we do need s/h spares if the car is too far gone.

Have any of you seen Property Ladder? It's called the Sarah Beeny effect. People just want to do there own thing, even if it seems nuts to the rest of us. Good luck!

restore or not restore that is the question ?

Hello merry people ,
Being a new member and having just bought a wreck that had been sitting in someones garage,i would just like to say every nut ,bolt ,and anything else i cant think of now is seized.I have more holes than swiss cheese, and i now ache all over !!
Still the sun is out and what else would i do with my time ( Erm let me think )
Any how good luck red will see you at the finishing line.
PS PMAC can i have your phone number and anyone with bits to sell please give us a shout ,ta ta for now:lol:

You bunch of hypocrits !:)

You're all rightgeous about restoring a UK car then bleat and place ads all over the place reclaiming any and all bits that you know you're gonna need for your UK restos.

Where do you think these bits came from ? Yes, they're mostly all genuine UK wreck internals and in view of the ridiculously small quantity of UK cars left, most of these parts were 'liberated' by imports and swapses.

Since imports began (in the early '80s ?) there must have been upwards of a hundred brought over, lets say 75 of which 25 got cut up into 250GTOs, were involved in accidents or where re-exported ;) !

That leaves at least 50 of the UKs current 180ish in total 240Z community that began street life on US roads.

Good on you guys BUT the cars won't have anymore value that a converted import, you'd have to convince me (after seeing my UK restored car melt away in 6 years) that the rust won't reappear to threatenng levels and you're gonna spend more money and certainly more time (before you get out and drive the car) - life is short.

That's the opinion of those that have been where you are, the advice is other than that which you've chosen but hey, do as you feel and we'll be happy to advise, smirk and applaud your efforts.

These imported cars are gonna rot away too one day anyway, aren't they? Should 'they' be scrapped as well when that happens until there are no more S30s in the world? Now 'that' would be a shame.

Gentlemen,

with the great benefit of hindsight and knowledge learnt from over 30 years of Z ownership in this country, modern, better performing restoration and treatment products, higher values placed on coveted, rarer and more appreciated cars and especially starting with clean (almost) rust free cars, any imported car will last indefinitely, especially in dry climates such as 'chez moi' ;) !

When mine eventually melts away, there are still plenty of others - 1000s of them to import and start again and it's not until the supply starts to dry up and demand is still high than someone somewhere will begin producing 'heritage shells' !

To give you an idea, my import needed the rear valence changing ('cos it was mishandled during transit) other than that, every panel including the floor etc is original - probably more original than those of you with Zs who've fitted pattern parts (it's just under the skin that mine's less than origin).

Anyone throwing the time and money at a UK car restoration on a shell that is less than good condition has either a lot of it to spend or has been badly advised

Sean in your recent advert you say :

Tax exempt, genuine UK, well worth restoring therefore and will be worth loadsamoney when finished.

....all of which is true, especially face to face with some opinions here........and who knows, there might be someone else out there similarly with loads of dosh to throw at ME !

Ive got a '73 z and its got a fair amount of rot. If I dont charge myself and labour its gonna be a fairly cheap rust free car when im done. Alot cheaper than a 4 grand import. And its RHD.
Cut out the bad bits, put new bits in. Simple.
