Anyone for an LHD project car?

Just had a re-think and the green car is pretty bad. A real money pit if ever I saw one. You'd have to be a fool to bid on it so I advise you all to stay away.

:)

Now what colour should it be?

Completely agree with the points you make. You should keep well away too.

I'm thinking white.

Ford Frozen White probably.

;)

As Rob notes, a good car with a sunroof is a good car. But still worth less than one without...[/QUOTE]

The problem with sunroofs especially those fitted aftermarket is leakage. Every car that I have owned with one of these has leaked at some point or at the very least it creates condensation inside which drips on a colder day.

Given the fact that older Datsuns are allergic to moisture it could store up a load of hassle. They would be ok for a US-based car in a dry State where there is no rain but I would question it in this country. IMO there is no substitute for a fully sealed metal roof with no cutouts in it to let water in.

Its buyer beware when buying cars .as we keep saying helps if you know what to look for and a sunroof is not the end of the world .there is plenty of of over areas where water can leak in on an old car and let's face it these cars will not see much rain unless used as a daily driver.

Well I did stick around and  it went for a good few pennies, IMO it was an easy car to restore every spot weld was visible and panels were very straight and body lines were spot on, there was a rust issue with an over exited alternator in the past spilling acid under the battery tray and causing rusted holes in that area, if I could have bought it for 7K ish I would have but it made more than that, I stopped at just under 8K like Richie said to me before hand it could be like a feeding frenzy and it was

Mad. It had lots of potential, but over 8k?

I suspect the person who imported it is feeling very pleased right now given their profit margin was probably extremely healthy!

luckily I looked at the nova certificate and know who imported it ;)

This always looked like a good car to buy but did go for quite a high price. Probably the correct price in todays market. The prices in the US have gone up and the dollar isn't very good so probably not a massive profit. I wouldn't think you'll find many as good as this coming over.

Today's sale makes me think again back to that silver auto 240z import in Devon a few months back, listed for ages at 9.5k - presumably not selling because Devon seems a long way from most places! That was a very nice, immediately useable car with room to improve and mod over time if desired.

The car today was very appealing in various respects as Terry noted. But I just can't believe over 9k by the time all fees etc, are included is good value. Maybe I'm a cheapskate who needs to get real though!

There's still plenty of cheap cars in CA though - maybe not unmolested, original ones (a very important distinction, maybe as exemplified today) - but seeing as I intend to fully molest the **** out of anything I buy as my next project, originality is an impediment! I want something I don't feel guilty about messing with...

As we all know, the key to happy Zed ownership is what's under the paint. I wouldn't buy a car that's already been painted unless it was a long long time ago. I my books, an honest tatty original car car is the best thing to base your project on. I've had a few UK 240's. The first was a great looking rust bucket that needed welding every year to just scrape it through the MOT. There were always little piles of rust under it wherever it was left. The blue one was restored by fourway with lots of new Nissan panels but was never sealed properly in the areas they didn't touch so there are a few bits that will require attention. The new one was stripped to a bare shell so I could see exactly what I was getting. You cant guarantee the condition of a roadgoing UK, or import for that matter, car if it's been painted or repaired. That's why I liked this one so much and why I think it went for good money. We all know how much it cost to pay someone to repair rust and its cheaper to buy one that doesn't need it in the first place.

Define 'cheap' please as compared to 2 years ago and what you think you might pay in 6 months time ?;)

Granted, cheap isn't what it used to be. $5-9k. 6-12 months time, God knows. Guess I'm going to need to take a bite of reality soon...

A bit different to the days when Datsun Dave got his rust-free Arizona car for 2.5k landed in the UK...

Yes indeedy and even then we complained at how much it cost compared to the initial purchase.:D

I can see the 240z continuing to rise to a price that not many of us can afford. Buy soon or you will regret it.

Exactly what I can see happening. Good as an existing owner, bad as one desiring another project (particularly when balanced against normal life of two toddlers in nursery, mortgage, etc.).
