Great work really looking good bet you was good at jigsaws when you was a kid  you must be pleased with what you've done, and when you've finished the car you will be so proud :D you will also forget how much work you've actually done,as I did but I still look back
on my resto thread and it reminds me and makes me smile inside. Good luck with the rest of the car and keep the pics coming :thumbs:

Cheers Derrick, I sure hope I will see that day soon! Kind of scary that the welding is coming to an end, I hadn't planned that far ahead. Time to paint the floors and learn body work I suppose

Yes, beware the vinyl! Strangely enough the roof was bare metal under the vinyl and survived pretty well, odd how it rusted in that one little area, and from the inside too. The seam sealer was still present all the way along the drip rail so water can't have gotten in there.

Were these cars dipped in primer at the factory? There's no other way I can think of how they managed to get primer in between overlapping panels and right around welds. And how on earth did they get seam sealer along the inside front upper corner of the sills?

The slam panel was a little bit ragged, plus I also found another bit of armour plating welded on to the driver's side...

With the panel removed it was obvious some repairs to hidden areas were needed (what a surprise..!), and also found another poor repair to the hatch corner which will need sorting

Even though nobody is ever going to see any of this it's nice to know there's no rust hiding there

Great fabrication work ,you are doing the right thing cutting out all of rust and replacing it with good metal don't want bubbles coming through the paint in a year or two after all your hard work, great job soon be ready for paint .What colour are you going for .:)

Derrick

White, because it's cheap and easy. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere.
I'm sure I'll have missed some rust somewhere; I have a big bottle of phosphoric acid and wire wheels at the read so will be going over the whole thing with that before paint I think

I think the S30 suits white.
Mind get all that acid off if you are really going to use it.
Nice fabrication!!
It always seems that its the old repairs which cause all the problems!

You have some very good skills there !!!! I think white is back in fashion now .I know of some more datsuns that are going to be painted white

Cheers, but to be honest I'm not happy with a lot of it. I wish I could take my time and do it neater but I don't have that luxury as I have less than a month to go before I lose my job, but seeing as that's not enough to worry about I've also been told the house I'm renting is now in the process of being sold so I will likely be house-less and garage-less too which will obviously mean no more car.
2.5 years of working my ass off and I'll have exactly dick to show for it. Figures.
Don't really know what to do so for the time being just carrying on and hoping some miracle happens.

Hello from Australia, so sorry about your plight but don't Give up, you have done all the hard work and the end result will be worth all the pain, (been there done that) things will work out, they always do lol

Cheers Chuckie

Thanks very much for the encouragement, not posted any updates here for the last couple of weeks as I've been working my ass off trying to get stuff done. The shell is in bare metal now and I wish I could believe the hard work is all done but bodywork is a lot more effort than I thought, especially as we have a heatwave over here at the moment. That said, I'm glad I don't live where you are right now!

Apparantly the house is sold subject to contract and the buyers are waiting for the house to be empty so they can start the paperwork. I haven't had an eviction notice yet so I don't know what's going on, but I'm not about to call the landlord to find out. Every day is a bonus...

HI again, bodywork is easy and more gratifying as you can see the finished product, and when its in undercoat you will get a boost to continue this project.
How hot is it there? its cold here at the moment (about 20 deg C) but it does get warm here in summer (105 deg c) lol, and as I am an expat from Liverpool I know what you mean about the warmer weather.

Keep up the great work Cheers Colin

It's been about 30C here but the garage is a heat trap. Maybe I am not cut out for bodywork - I swear my arms are going to drop off soon!

It's been a while since I updated this thread, had to concentrate on getting it done so ended up taking less pictures. Plus I managed to put my phone through the washing machine; the camera on it was never that great but now it's a whole lot worse!

Received a new slam panel via Mr. F:

Repaired the remaining holes in the roof:

This one had definitely seen better days, had to replace the bottom section of it:

Just when you think you've done everything you find the rusty hinges. After the acid bath:

Pushed the shell around the corner for paint, popped back in a bit later to see how the masking off was going and got a bit of a surprise. Picture quality sucks, it looks soooo much better in person. The spray painter took some with a better camera but for some reason they wouldn't send to my email so I will have to post them up once I get them.

The roof came out bloody awesome, that was the bit I was most concerned about because I couldn't really see very well in that dark garage!

Hopefully on Monday the paint will be flatted down and buffed and then it will be the turn of the panels and other bits.

I've just re-run through this Thread and reminded myself what you've done on this car. Great work, it's coming on well and the end is in sight.

I also noticed how fond you are of your cat :)

Looking good mate, glad it's all starting to work out for you. Funny how cats ALWAYS want to get into the photo. Curiosity killed the cat is the most apt saying I've ever heard, lol.
