1970 240z

The chap would rather have period alloys over the steel wheels he has. Thought that was pretty simple to understand from his first post. Plus nowhere has he stated he wanted period Australian wheels.

You guys just over complicate things.

Calm down Maxim - more info and more choice does complicate but often leads to a betetr informed decision upon which wheels to choose and since it is an Aussie import and the word 'original' was mentionned, surely it would be relevant to see what 'original' aftermarket wheels they fitted down there ?

Hi Does anyone know what size the original Wolfrace wheels were that were offered as an option on the 1970 240Z ?

Or should someone have merely said "14x6 go find" ?

Hi Does anyone know what size the original Wolfrace wheels were that were offered as an option on the 1970 240Z ? I think they were 14 by 6J but some people tell me they were 7J ?
Thanks
Woolfrace wheels were around in the UK before any 240Zs arrived here. They were available in 6", 6.5" and 7" x14.
Other companies like Cobra made "slot mags"
And in the US slotmags were made by Appliance industries and probably other companies too..
There is no one of the many variations I have documented that were "original".
They were all fitted after the cars landed in the UK or US.
Some enterprising dealers probably fitted them to up the profit margin on the car. In other cases they were done by owners..
I know nothing about the Aussie market so no comment.
Any 70s slotmag will look good on a 240Z IMHO and if that is the style you like then JFDI.
FYI there were no dealer cars sold in the UK in 1970
The only two examples were a pair of demonstrator cars which still exist today in "safe hands"
Sales for real started in 71 in the UK with around 70 cars being sold according to books on the subject.

When you picked up your car from the dealer (here or anywhere) and you'd ordered the slot wheel upgrade (made by whoever) was it the custom to ALSO give the original wheels back to the new owner (with tyres) - I suppose so if they'd asked for them as they had paid extra for them - the car would have arrived at the dealer with the original steelies on ...

Slots were ALWAYS bigger tyres as well I presume?

My understanding is that the 'Wolfrace' brand wasn't created until 1971. Its interesting how the 'mag' reference has been retained. Mag is an abbreviation of 'magnesium' which was the material used on some racing/high performance cars during the post war period. I gather the material did have some significant disadvantages and was largely replaced by the alloys found in many post '70 wheels.

I've got a couple of early Wooflrace slots in my garage which are of an early Z. They are 6x14 and are fitted with 195/70R14 tyres. The early Wolfrace ones on my 260Z are 7x15 with 205/60R15 tyres which I think isn't very common.

So hopefully it's is now evident that the answer to Albert's question isn't as straightforward as some make it to be.

Is the desire to represent the car as period correct as possible on basis that it was
A) Australian supplied
B) UK supplied
C) not fussed

Then the wheels could be
-wolfrace
-cobra superslots
-appliance ( as on US cars)
-Enkei ( they also "copied" this style)
- Dragways?? ( I think the Aussie call them Jelly Beans not sure who manufactured them)

Once you have decided above, then it's decisions around sizes and widths..

So it can get messy and is very much dependant on what OP wants. One could end up with a Japanese manufactured car, sold in Australia, now in UK with American supplied wheels.

The Z IS a world car...;)

The decision might also be dependant upon what is available.....

Guys thanks for all the info here !
Fantastic response so thanks.
As you probably gather I'm a new 240Z owner. Bought the car 8 weeks ago from Sydney and its just been shipped over and is at Fourways for some work. Joined the club last night.
Not fussed about Auz originality. Just glad its a very original RHD car and intend to keep it that way. Will probably go for the 14 x 6 Wolfrace given that what seems to look most original and most seem to indicate that. Havent seen any 14x7's and I'm a bit worried 15x7's will look a bit more up to date.
Anyway Ill post some photos when I get it back. For those interested Fourways took a few shots on their Facebook page.
Thanks again Albert

Just had a look, looks extremely nice Albert.

I think the Wolfrace look great, 14 x 6 or 14 x 6.5 would be good bets.

Not sure why you think 7x15 would look more up to date

The pic I posted earlier in this thread shows mine with 7" Wolfies...They look and fit well....Only the tyres let them foul as the are 215/50

There seem to be a lot more 14 x 6's on Ebay etc.
Havent seen any 14x7's or 15x7's.
Are they difficult to find ?

I would say keep on searching for a set of 7 x 14 wolfies they look 1000 times better than 6 x 14. Or you could go for a set of custom built 17" Boyd Coddington split rims that I may be parting with shortly :D
