What did you do to your Z this week?

Went out to investigate a fuelling issue only to discover that the rear carb’s needle had loosened off and dropped down a fair way!! I blame the hack mechanic that put them in!

But the thing I want to share is this: as some of you know, I have installed twin 10” fans on my rad with my own circuit that constantly varies their speed and allows me to override to off or 98% PWM duty cycle.

They stay on for 5 mins after the ignition goes off to continue the airflow through the engine bay! Well what I love is the way they push enough air to overcome the resistance of the mech fan clutch and move the fan!!! That’s gotta be pushing some good CFMs! While it sounds like a jet engine inside the garage, with the engine running you barely hear them!

Started to clean up the rear end components, first up was the moustache bar.

Just fitted the new polyurethane bushes.

Surprised this has not sold yet Rob. I would have thought being RHD, the Sam livery and a decent price point would have had the punters queuing up?
I'll hang on to it now unless someone forces my hand. It's not advertised anywhere now except on here. I'm altering my garage racking to give me a bit more width for tinkering. Also it's running really well in fact it seems to get quicker or is it me that's getting older? I've had 3 serious enquiries. 2 of them really wanted standard cars so I advised them to keep looking. The 3rd wanted me to px it against a £65k Metro 6R4 copy. It wasn't even registered properly with the DVLA.

I bought a compressor, always wanted one, now i feel like a real piston head!

Went for a 50L due to space constraints, its a silent one, too many neighbours in close proximity for a powerful noisy one. It only does 11cfm put fine for my needs....which are; waxoyl spraying (bought a gun), pumping tyres, using a smoke evap leak tester, blowing and some light spraying. The Mrs still wonders why i needed it...

The neighbours must hate me. 100L, 3hp, noisy beggar compressor in the garage. Combined with all the high pitched screeching of cut-off tools, die grinders, etc., over the last year and half of Dixie-related activity...

Although, tbh, they have experienced the worst of it now. Shell is done, hatch is done, just bonnet and doors to do and they all need minimal work (especially as I might replace one of the doors with a new pattern one).

Had a play with a new toy at lunch.

Firstly, no real Dixie updates - the rear hatch is ready for a sealer coat of epoxy after getting the skimming work complete (I used Evercoat Easy Sand for this - expensive but me likey).

(The photo also shows the new lip spoiler for the Celica that arrived from Japan a few days ago.)

Rather than get another can of the 2k epoxy by Mipa/Upol/Spraymax (the same stuff), this weekend I’ll be transitioning over to my 4-stage turbine HVLP setup and shooting this stuff for the first time:

Should be more economic than the cans.

I’ve been gradually working on the Star Shark wheels I got for the RA25 Celica. They were pretty oxidised and have needed much cleaning up and sanding/polishing to get the deep lips free of marks and in a state suitable for 2K clear. I’ve still only done one to the standard I’m after:

Obviously, the centre is still in need of attention on that one. That’s where the new toy comes in, and another wheel was used as a test subject:

Bought one of those smaller soda blaster guns (with a suction cup). Pretty effective, although it is very greedy with the media and I ended up looking like I’d taken a bath in cocaine. A chunk of the garden looked like it had been snowing too (and I notice some of the weeds have started to go black and die thanks to the soda!). Still, biodegradable and all that. Keep tasting salt though...
