Took the car to Pembrey for 2 days of sprinting for the girls.
Seeing and hearing the Datsun flying down the pit straight at Pembrey in the dry at about 120MPH was a moving emotional experience knowing that my girls were giving it all.
Seeing and hearing the Datsun flying down the pit straight at Pembrey in the WET at just over 100mph dodging the standing water reinforced my trust in the girls having the Z to play with. Steph had the better of both Hannah and Larry over the weekend and really showed some brave and determined driving in the challenging conditions. Proud Proud dad

Since I'm still waiting for some parts to finish the rear suspension of the 260Z, I made a start on the 280Z!
First to go were the hideous federal bumpers (which should be a huge weight saving) then I stripped out the interior.
The rear side markers were removed and the fronts wired to the indicators.

I still need to drop the fuel tank to remove the rear bumper shocks but was side tracked by the delivery of a special set of wheels for the R34!

These took almost a full day to fit due to having to cut off a set of bolt on spacers that refused to budge after being on for around 10 years!

I also managed to get the rear spoiler fitted!

That 280Z is an excellent project car Mark. I looked it over at Chris's barn. Very solid and a straightforward restoration.

I totally agree, apart from a little surface rust at the LH quarter window I haven't found anything else inside or out!
The plan was to do a colour change anyway so should be straight forward as you say.
I already have new carpets and seat covers as well as several good parts from the 260Z (door cards, dog leg panels and centre console) so the hardest part will probably be the dash refurb!............Hopefully! ;)

One thing to check out I spotted - there is some rust at the lower rear quarters behind the arches that's probably been caused by muck getting trapped in the mountings for the impact bumpers' shocks. Not much, but worth looking at. Maybe cut those mounts out anyway seeing as you've dumped the federal spec bumpers.

If I'd have been after an easy rolling resto and a 280Z, I'd have been all over that car. It actually makes me wonder if a similar 280Z is in my future somewhere, as it does have appeal. Will have to wait a while with Project Dixie coming first though!

What is it now Ben - 'rent a Z'? Do you get to drive it anymore?

Anyway they seem to know what they are doing - well 'schooled' no doubt.

I don't think they'll fit without some serious tyre stretching...

Maybe you didn't do it right Rob. I've hooked up mood lighting with a water flow sensor, all I need now is to link it to a sound system playing Julio Iglesias and I reckon I'll be in luck!

hahahaha yes they do seem to think it is their car now. I get to drive it with Hannah this Saturday at Abingdon and also at the retrorides show at Shelsley in August.

To be honest I enjoy watching them driving it so much I would not want one of them to step aside and let me drive it. They love the car and love racing it and have supported me for so many years it is their turn now.

I need to get the pilbeam finished then I can play untill they decide they want a go in that then I get the Z back

I did some more work on my project in the last week or so. Sorting things out to clear the way for removing the engine and transmission.

Had a couple of hours yesterday but it fought me a bit. :smash: The exhaust bolts were a challenge (dodgy mounting arrangement) and the front balance didn't want to come off!

Still, did a bit of work at home on the centre console, which is in excellent condition. Just needs some small holes filling where the arm rest and air con controls were mounted. And some trim dye applying as it's faded a bit. Kitchen sink time...

It's had a going over with washing up liquid and then all-purpose cleaner (Meguiars), so it's very clean. It's sun bleached a bit basically. I've got some Halfords flexible vinyl paint, which is excellent stuff for trim; I just fancy trying a different product in the form of a wipe-on permanent dye. We'll see. I epoxy filled the small holes this evening, so will sand those flush tomorrow and maybe spray it up. The ash tray and lid from another console I have is in much better condition, so I will be swapping it onto this one. End result should look close to new.

Last weekend I fitted some refurbished brake calipers and new pads on my 260z which I got off eBay about a year ago.
I had a lot of trouble with the brakes binding on the drivers side ,sticking rusty pistons ,
now much better , probably save a few quid on fuel too
My next job is to fit some new ball joints which I managed to pick up fairly local to me at a small car parts shop in Bolton £12 each and one has greasing nipple on it.
Not a bad price I think.

Took a member's advice regarding BriteMax cleaner / polish and had a go at some corroded slot mags on my Zed. I was very happy with the ease of application and the results. Some new center caps and tyres and one more check to the punch list.
