Ryan's 260z Project Thread

My welder plasmer cut a sheet of metal which he welded in place and then used a bit of filler to finish it off. He said this was better then welding on a new roof skin as that would have been hard to match up.

Eh????????:conf2: :conf2: :conf2:

Fitting a replacement roof skin would have produced a much better job(IMO). Just a case of melting out the lead filling and drilling the spot welds to remove the old one then plug welding the replacement in plce and re leading the rear join.
No lumps, no bumps and NO FILLER.

At the minute the motor and suspension are staying as they are - there in reasonable shape and ive spent all the money i can afford for this year. Id love to go down the V8 route but for the time being that will have to wait. The wheels are shortly being changed for a set of polished slots. Will look the part then.

I know what you mean Pmac - i was offered several roof skins and told my mate Dave this - i thought it would be easier and look ok as well. But he decided his way was the better way. I wont be able to see how it looks properly until its out in the sunlight. It seems to have worked ok at the mo - i know filler has to be avoided at all costs but at the end of the day anything is better then that sunroof!!!

I expect it will be fine as long as the welds are good, modern filler is nothing like the old stuff.
Looking really nice in that colour, black trim would realy suit it.

Hi,
How about a targa roof???....like the one on ebay!...

Well the bumpers are being painted black as i speak - the chrome was already long gone on them and the chrome trim around one of the screens i managed to destroy so i doubt ill bother replacing that. All thats left in chrome is a few little odd bits like the mirrors (which i kinda like in the chrome) and trim bits round the door windows and down the sides of the roof - not sure what ill do about them yet.

 looking great from where i sit, i have a rag top on my 260, its has been a god send this weekend, if it was a glass roof i would have dumped it at the first hurdle... well done and keep it going..........

Updated Pics from the 7th Sept - Front and rear windows back in place with new seals. All thats left is some panel aligning and the final polish of the paintwork and then the rest is upto me! Car is coming home this week! Cant wait to start driving it again.

Well the last 5 weeks have been hard work but she is slowly getting there. Lots of trimming and tinkering has been done and theres still lots more to do. Im pleased to have managed to fit my 240z carbs as i didnt plan on doing this till next year. Should be putting it through the MOT next week or two. Not happy with the black bumpers but they will have to do for now.

Ive attached the latest pics:

P.S Just like to thank everyone whose been answering my questions in the last few weeks, they have been very numerous and im sure a bit tedious! But its made all the difference as without the knowledge everyone has shared with me i dont think i would be any where near this far.

Cool colour, very nice.

Nige

p.s. don't frett about the filler, everyone has plenty of it covered up if they'd be honest;) ;)

Hmm Well i know that the police would pull you over but if i dont give the MOT man an old MOT how will he know the age of the car as its got a Irish No. Plate??? Thats my thinking anyway

:S30: if its for post 73 plates and the irish plate is not age related how will any body be able to argue the fact??????????????????????????????

martin

I think if i had one of them traffic cops following me they might be able to use there number plate scanner and then that would bring up the age of the car on there screen. Other then that im hoping ill be alright.

I have to say that IMO the black and silver plates really do suit the car - i think the normal standard plates would spoil the classic look.

With the new computerised MOT the chassis # is typed in & that tells the tester when it was manufactured so keep your fingers crossed & use a local test station you can trust.
