Ryan's 260z Project Thread

I think if i had one of them traffic cops following me they might be able to use there number plate scanner and then that would bring up the age of the car on there screen. Other then that im hoping ill be alright.
Having said that I saw a brand new Merc with black/silver plates at the weekend.

"Brand new" would imply it hasn't been Mot'd yet ????:conf2:

Mike
Would you have a new car & risk being pulled? It was a personal plate but can't remember the age of the plate coz I was so stunned at seeing it.

Hello All

After managing to start the car only a few days ago today i got the timing checked and the 240z carbs roughly set up today. Shes running quite smooth and ticks over quite nice now. Went for a very short ride down my road and before i got out of 2nd gear i had to turn round and come back as ive got a massive "whirring" noise coming from the back - im guessing could be wheel bearing or possibly worse and maybe a diff bearing. Im going to put the rear up on stands tommorow and get someone to drive it in 1st whilst i take a closer inspection. Apart from this ive got a few other minor problems like no hazard lights and a dodgy windscreen wiper. I dont think im too far off the MOT mark, just need a little more time. Thats the one thing ive learnt about owning a Datsun - ill never have any free time again, but then at least im not bored!

P.S Got this little snap of the Engine bay - Looking a bit fresher then she used to.

do not forget to check the rear universal joints on the halfshafts and propshaft aswell

It could be just a noisy diff they are renound for noisy transmissions inc gearboxes, check there is enough oil in both.

Sorted the "bad" noise - turned out to be the backplate of the rear brakes touching the fins on the drum! Sounded like a coke can in the bike spokes but 100 times worse! Ive still got other noises coming from the rear but i think thats down to a generally worn diff/ujs/bearing etc.

On basically her first trip out, i headed towards the MOT centre today - didnt get a mile away before i broke down :( Car started fine, idled nicely - pulled off the drive - got down the first few roads and then just died, completely cut out. Managed to get it down a side road with a push and then begain investigating. Looks like it was something to do with the fuel pump - i replaced the electric one it had with an original mechanical one but for some reason it seems to have given up after barely a mile of use. Putting the Electric one back on has let me start it but its running like a heap of doo doo. Looks like theres more work to be done for that MOT yet!

Ime not sure Ryan but i think some of the 260s had both electric and mechanical pumps, but in your case i would recommend u stick with the mechanical pump for the time being as your running 240z carbs, did u get the flow and return pipes with the 240 carbs as u may be flooding the float chambers

Iv'e had 3 260's & they all only had a mechanical pump so I think you should concentrate on getting it to run with a mechanical pump as you are only on 240 carbs, I even run my weber 40's with one on, "without probs".

my 240z broke down on the M1 a few years back and it was the mechanical fuel pump that had broke,a part of a one way valve had broke off and jamed it open so it was not sucking the fuel up.
if i was you check for any blockage in the fuel lines and either fit a new mechanical pump or a new electric one like malcom did in the other thread.

Hello All Again.

I managed to balance the carbs and fiddle with the mixture a bit so as to be able to get her to idle again. It goes a little like this - very nasty idle when cold - slowly gets better as she warms up - once warmed up idles spot on - no missing at all absolutely perfect (ish). I take the car for a short run up and down my road - i get back onto the drive and it idles like a piece of doo doo again and then conks out and doesent want to start again and if i do get it going it sounds like its running on about 0.1 cylinders. Im guessing it wasnt the mech fuel pump that was causing the problem after all. Apart from ditching the carbs and finiding some others im now a bit stuck. :conf2:

Anyway - heres the latest pics i took today. The interior is basically done apart from ive got to work out how to attach the window winders as the they wont stay in place and the spurs have all but rounded off. Im also not happy with the tailgate - it wont sit flush - its better on one side then the other but ill investigate that later. Theres some scabby bits around the exhaust cut out and the other 2 holes in the rear - will be sorting out some sort of stainless steel plates to cover them over soon.

Thanks for reading and i do like reading everyones comments so feel free to speak your mind!

perhaps the coil is breaking down when it gets hot,if you are still on points a new one will be cheap to buy new ,the last one i got was about £11 from any motor factors as it is very common on a lot of old cars and that was with a nice shiny bracket aswell !!!!!
