UPDATE FOR 11/11/2007 AT END OF THREAD

Hello to all.

I thought as its been a while since ive done any messaging on here that i would start my own project thread. The background is that back in Feb i bought my first ever 260z for £2K from a nice chap called Neil. I drove it the lengthy distance of Warwick to Romford with no problems what so ever.

I drove it around for a few weeks and then got started on the task of giving the car a good strip down and rebuild - some of my shortlisted tasks were - Complete new interior - Complete replacement of all rubber components inc bushes and seals etc - Removal of the sunroof - Replacing the current wheels with some Slot Mags - Replacing the standard Carbs with 240z ones - Sorting out of the bodywork and structural rust... properly!

So over the next few months i got started on stripping down. Some of the pics can be seen in the gallery. It wasnt until i removed some of the interior and the wings that the full extent of the rot became apparant. Lucky enough a friend of a friend (Dave Dodd is his name) specialises in these sorts of problems and has also rebuilt 2 240z's of his own many years ago. So with a little help from my mate Terry i managed to get the car down to DC Dodds garage in Whipps Cross and there it has been for about the last 2-3 months. Due to him being a very busy man he has only just got started on the car. My plan is to keep visiting him and as and when i update my pictures i will post them on here. Just thought id let everyone know my progress and if theres any questions or if can help anyone out at all with info then ill try my best.

Ryan

P.S If anyone is interested in buying those set of TurboVecs seen in the pics then let me know - as i will soon be putting them up for sale.

I was only just wondering how your car was going the other day Ryan but u have answered my question, looks like ur going for it, just one tip u can give Mr Dodd when he comes to fit the wings on is that to fit the 2 inspection covers on first, as these tend to govern the position of the wing and door gaps, unlike i did got my door gaps purfect then realized the 2 flaps wouldnt fit

Thanks for the Tip Tel, I will let him know when i go see him again in a couple of weeks - how is yours coming along, did you finish sorting out the bodywork? Time for the painting to beguin?

Ryan,
When you get round to putting 240z carbs on, don't chuck the standard 260z carbs, I'll have them. I have another use for them rather than "boat anchors"!!

Cheers
Ian

Looks you´re dooing a very fine job.
A Tipp fom my side, make Photos from each section of the car from every angle. You will need them later when you gonna fix everthing togther. Belive me.

Nearly, the wings and headlamp pods are bolted in place , the doors are on with only a couple of bolts, cos there coming off for the paint, its a bit like your story its hard to pin a car painter down to a time, so im just gona keep going with the body work myself, i'm hoping that in about 2 weeks time the 2 grand  man  may do it for me, if not its the spraygun for me and about a weeks flatting down and polishing  what ever way it'll be well worth, it as i am sure u will find out :D

Hello again!
Right its update time - ive just popped down to see my mate Dodd and get the latest on how my Z is getting along - hes just been on holiday so to be honest not too much has happened in the few weeks since my last post but there was some progress:

Engine Removed - Niggly bits in the engine bay removed
Roof Constructed - Yes my 260z has a roof once more. After a previous owner had attacked it and put a sunroof in its finnally back the way it should be - or as close as anyway.

Ive decided that the whole thing will be resprayed in BMW Mini Dark Silver - basically a Gun Metal Grey. It will be about the cars 5th /6th colour but i think it should look really nice in that colour. See the pics of the new roof below.

Ryan

Im thinking of a little bit darker then that one Sean, that almost looks like a champagne colour but i guess its just the reflection of the light. Im going for the same colour as the mini in the pic attached below......

Hello all again.

Just been to see the car once more and im pleased to say that its actually nearing completion! After many months in the garage the work will be shortly coming to an end. All the Welding is now complete - with many bits sorted out including the battery tray area - suspension turrets - chassis rails - and much much more and the car has had its first lick of paint in its fresh colour! Im so pleased with the roof as well - to think it had a big hole there not long ago....

These are the latest pics:

Well the seal had already perished and i managed to smash the glass i decided to rip out the frame with brute force. The roof went totally wobably - the frame must have been holding everything in shape. My welder plasmer cut a sheet of metal which he welded in place and then used a bit of filler  to finish it off. He said this was better then welding on a new roof skin as that would have been hard to match up. Hes very good at his job - i couldnt believe it when i saw it. A critic would probably point at the odd lump or bump but it looks great to me.

Heres the whole story in pictures.....

Well done Ryan for saveing another Zed! Looks like a nice job. Are you going with the decrome Look? I think that would look great with that colour?
Whats the plan for the motor/suspension/wheels? are you going the hybrid Route?
