Quick rack

So come over and try it ........and your wife is gonna drive it ? Poof - who's 'carrying the globes' chez toi ?

Well im a big guy, 18 stone and 6'2 and to be honest i wouldn't mind some kind of assisted steering............especially with the big wheels, it would make life alot easier.

What assisted setup are you running sean?

You know I quite fancy a few restful evenings sitting in that out door bubble bath of yours my old mucker ;)..

As far as the wife goes she likes fast cars and is a keen driver herself, Plus she keeps me in the manor to which I've come accustom being a house bitch for the last 5 1/2 years :D:cool:, She's a Finance Director in Aberdeen.

Rob - so fly over and leave her to work AND pay for a nanny for a weekend - you DESERVE it - you know you do ! 18°c yesterday - see the latest photos in the thread "living the dream" for the blue sky.

Jay - it's a bitsa system : 1x rack, 1 electronic box, 1x pump and fluid reservoir, some complicated wiring and a RHD steering rack;) !

Any more info, please ask DJR as I'm not allowed to tell :(

I wish I had the time mate :(, I've just got far to much on at the moment. I still haven't managed to get down south to see my new grandson yet :(.

Out of interest to me and others reading this thread, What would be the total cost of installing a system like yours, Just for future reference you understand ;).

Rob

I really dont understand this "I CANT SAY ITS A SECRET" why not share like they do in the states?

Not getting at you by the way Sean

I don't feel 'got at' mate. I have to respect he who spents countless hours in a cold garage, away from his warm wife trying to work out how to have a workable system. If I just 'give' it away.....which is why I suggest youask Mr J. I've given several clues here (alright, I admit I enjoy games but I could just not sau anything....) after all.

My system cost a lot because it was engineered from nothing, eventually we shared a bit of the cost but his time is still money so I paid AND I'm not disappointed, not for the pose value - I don't give a toss, it's just sooo good, just like the Silvia box I have now - who wants to slag THAT off and say 'it doesn't have the same feeling' - too bloody right it doesn't - I don't have to look down to select a gear, I can whack straight up to a hairpin, slam the brakes on and thrust it into first and let the LSD do the work - a Z box would baulk up !

Evolution - if we'd killed off every following species, we'd still be swinging in the trees throwing fruit at those who are different........:p

I agree fitting a more modern box and PS is most definitely a good thing, I'm all for upgrading as long as I don't loose the feel of the car to much.

Regarding the PS price I don't really see the problem in you letting us all know exactly what Mr Jarman would be expecting for a similar system to yours, That way for those of us that are to skint to be able to afford one, It will stop us calling him up and wasting his valuable time ;).

How will you know for sure that any modif. you do won't lose the feel of the car ?

Three zeros and less than a 4 in front. Parts, time and fitted.

(Not an intended hijack, and mildly on topic...) I drove the missus' car after only having driven my instructors and oh my lordy, did I miss the power steering. It's not because I'm a softy either it's simply because the car we have is pretty much shit. I'm learning in a little Pug 206 oiler and like with Sean on the 200 'box, you don't have to look down. The steering in the family car is shocking and the gearbox is so bloody vague that you really have no idea where you are. I feel pretty mean because when I pass my test and buy a 300 (only Z in my price range) not only will it have all of those goodies as standard, but I won't have room to take her along if I put the kids in the car. Such a bastard I know.

All that aside, what kind of steering set up did Big Sam have? If it was good enough to beat far more expensive cars round the track without a power assisted system on an old Z, surely a shortened traditional would be a better option (simply to keep it more Z-like). OK peeps... Open fire.

What you don't know - you don't miss and what else had power-steering back in 1974/5 ?

Besides, power steering is not homologated so no track use....and is saps power and in theory, race cars are lighter than road cars and are always moving fast so don't need it.

That said, I had it on at Castle Coombe and at Le Mans (look at my videos to see how relaxed a drive that was and I WAS red-lining) and at Charade.

The only time on a track there's no point is when it's wet !

BTW, why have you saddled your loving family with a pice of sh*t ? What is it a Vauxhall Cavalier ?

I'm not the only person here to have a Silvia/SX box but I'm sure that they know what difference it makes - you slip outa 5th and push forward into third - no searching - it's just ready - you push outa second (LHD) and the lever just slots in front of third ready to slide into - no notching just efficiency !

If you want to take away the feel of a Z, fit an non L series engine......ouch - who threw that sign-board ?

I think sometimes we can get carried away with ourselves. We buy an old car and then spent lots of time and money trying to make it modern.

My 350Z is a great rust-free modern Z complete with P/S, A/C, decent brakes etc etc. It is worth less than a lot of people in this club spend modifying their 240/260s.

Yes I have spent a lot of time and money on my 240 but it is very much a trackday car only now, to do the same on the 350 would be very expensive.

So for road use be careful how far you go. However I know it's human nature for enthusiasts to personalise their cars but we do get carried away don't we?

The solution is simple; rather than have one car that does it all, have lots of cars each doing their different job.

I have 4 :D

Absolute bollecks Ian - you obviously haven't tried a good set-up - again, pure speculation. Try it first - then comment !

I have (as in tried), ....a US built one, and a Japanese built one..all credit to Dave for creating yours from scratch, but so were these..

Ian - I really don't follow you here - I was referring to PS set-ups not complete cars - if I read you correctly, you have hand-built two a US and a JDM system ?

My rack isn't a Z/ZX rack !

Rob H - yes he will - on his own car but I seriously doubt (as you have stated) that he wants to do another - like I said - too many long, cold nights.......and yes, nowadays we DO expect a lot from our cars, we want them to do everything and everything well.
We have three, my Z, Audi A3 for town runs and the Vel Satis for long runs !

Rob G - A Z will always carry me away and all the time that I don't pay it on credit and the family still have a roof and food on the table - it'll stay that way ! But it's nothing to do with personalisation and everything to do with enjoying the car on AND off the track !

You want a bit of rough ;), I like a smooth efficient ride and I've tried a 350Z on the road - nice but no character and creamed 'em on the track. Great value but on the road I like my comfort - I am after all white van man with an average of 4000 miles per month and on the track, I like to overtake Stuttgart man !

Yes, I know, I'm arrogant but that's just another reason why I drive a 240Z - I'm proud, a little tipsy and stuffed full of B-B-Q from lunchtime !
