Quick rack

I like the lack of PAS on my Z. OK, it's heavy to park, but I like the feedback when I'm driving it. Our X5 and V40 obviously have PAS and while they're not too bad (ie not too over-powered) I far prefer the Z.

I'd swap PAS and ABS and Aircon etc etc for Z-exclusivity ANY time! :)

I don't know why people think that just because a car has power steering that it lacks feedback - there are cars with great power steering systems.

Someone less bigoted !

It's like saying "I prefer my 4 speed 240Z to a 5 speed" without ever having driven a 5 speed !

I agree, but so far have not driven a car with power steering ( with good feedback), so until then just going by what I have experienced...

There are good and bad.

Our old MX5 and my current 3-series work hack had/has fantastic power steering systems, but the SLK steering is way too light.

But also, my Z non-assisted steering is great with plenty of feedback and the Celica's non-assisted steering is pretty horrid - you can wiggle it 10 degrees without anything happening !!!!

I wouldn't object to a good power steering system on either of my old cars, but would be more inclined to sort the Celica's steering first as out of the two it is the one which requires attention.

Also, if you keep to the original system, rather than some power (or assisted) steering you loose the feel of what the car is doing on the road...and since it is a car for driving......

I have (as in tried), ....a US built one, and a Japanese built one..all credit to Dave for creating yours from scratch, but so were these..

Well (Grolls…) you’ve lost me Ian ! Have you tried a good power-assisted set-up on a Z or not ?

How many high-performance, light sportscars have you tried with PAS ? How many sportscars – with PAS period ? Point is if your experience is not relative to an S30 with a sophisticated set-up, that experience isn’t relative here.

I have never shied away from letting people I trust try mine out and THEN giving an opinion based on first-hand experience.

Rob - having had several Celicas......I agree with you - the Celicas' awful and can be deadly !

What about the short steering knuckles then ? I have been told not to fit them.

I had them fitted to my car and think they are fine.

I understand that they are not the thing if you are rallying. As the car spend much of its time on lock, the shorter knuckles can upset the geometry in this circumstance.

What was the reason you were told not to fit them ??
