Must be American petrol then....

Yes Alan - tyres are the main choice but what to set them upon...I'm not putting Minilites back on - they weigh a ton !

Pumps are generally reliable if fitted as recommended by the manufacture so I'd also put my money on crud.

My rota's have seen a lot of track and road use since 2010 and not had any issues. Tracks generally don't have many potholes or kerb's to side swipe like our pulic highways so I think if they last on the road they will be perfect for the track.

Looks like crud based on last night’s investigation. The Pre-filter in the bottom of the pump housing was actually pretty clean with little sediment visible. However, I noticed an unsightly “knobble” on the side of the pump. This turned out to be some sealant used to block an unused factory hole in the pump body. However that sealant was all discoloured and swollen and when I poked at it, it disintegrated into powdery cack. Furthermore, I could see (and feel with a screwdriver through the hole) that the top half of the pump is heavily spiked with muck or oxidation. So, for whatever reason, the pump mechanism has been fouled badly. The second pic in the next post shows a little of the muck that came out banging it on the workbench.

I’ve ordered a new pump, but will see what else I can do with the old one, if I can extract the mechanism. Not looked properly if that’s possible yet.

My thinking has evolved based on suggestions above towards going to two pumps. I was going to rework the fuelling system and related wiring anyway, so this just adds a few jobs to that exercise.

How odd, only thing i could think of was, possibly fine crap from within the fuel rail and rubber pipes to the carbs, draining back to the top of the pump!

Actually, you might have something there. The system as it is has no return - it’s just tank-pump-filter-carbs. So fuel does drain back over time to the pump. The hose on the outlet side of the pump is older and looking a bit rough. I had to replace the inlet one a few years ago due to, I presume, the impact of ethanol in modern fuel eating the rubber. The muck now could be material from the inside of the outlet hose. Need to get some ethanol-proof hose...

Better pop the inline fuel filter in the engine bay open and see what’s in there too.

I’ve always used an additive in my fuel to combat the ethanol effect!
I replaced some of my hose recently that’s been on the car for about 4 years, and internally it was absolutely fine.
I only changed it because the braid on the outside was getting a bit grubby.

I’m pretty damn sure that’s what’s happened - corroded rubber getting into the pump from the outlet hose. Time to buy some Teflon/PTFE hose...

If you fit two pumps which are interconnected what stops the working pump pushing fuel backwards into the tank through the idle pump?

You need to run check valves on a parallel pump system if the pumps are not already fitted with them.

Saw this 'set-up' on a Morgan at Mallory Park yesterday. It does not appear to have any valves fitted, the owner was not around to talk to:

Well that’s one way to run them!

Anyway, the Z lives again. New pump fitted and some new ethanol proof line. After hassle with a dead battery and a leaking hose to hard line connection, all is well. Shakedown drive coming up in a few mins.

Agreed - three stout pumps on the pedal and varoom ! If it doesn't - it's 'cos someone hasn't set it up right :) !

But it has been said that triple carbs are for anoraks.....ITBs are in.:D
