Manifold design

Cheers,............Ive the rear silencer to make next, then bolt on the manifold and make up the rest of the system, Hoping to have it finished at the weekend sometime if all goes well.

Good Jay,
Maybe worth while seeing how your inlet manifold fits with your manifold, especially regards thickness and fixing. Much easier here than on the car.

Hi Ian,

Yeah when I take the carbs off ill try fit everything on the dummy head and see how everything fits, it should be ok, I hope!

Well Ian you were indeed right, I went to bolt my carbs and intake to the dummy head to see how it would fit and it didn't  the bottom of the middle carb is sitting on top of NO 3 and 4 primaries.......I'm going to have to modify them tomorrow :beatdeadhorse:

Oh well I'll know the next time

Jay,
Don't worry too much, as this can be a frequent problem. This is why I suggested it before final fitting. At least it is easier to sort off the car.

well have the manifold finished now, hoping to get a chance to finish the rest of the system during the week sometime.........I must say there as an awful lot more work in it than I thought

Well I picked up the car from AAS this afternoon. I can't really tell how performance is as the cars running a bit wrong at the moment, but it does sound brilliant! :D

As you've probably gathered, I'm not especially technical, so all this 'science' goes a bit over my head, but for your info the primaries are 1 3/4" and the system 2 1/4. I'd have liked some photos of the header before it was attached to the car, but they 'forgot'! :( From the photos attached you can't really see anything, although they do show where the poor running is coming from. You can see that cylinders one and five aren't generating as much heat as the rest, as the fresh manifold metal isn't tarnishing as quickly on those two, So there's my next job!

Looks like a copy of a Janspeed system (see photo). Or a Fourways manifold (2nd photo).

I thought the advice here was 1 5/8 primarys on road and especially 'small' cc engines ?

First job Dale is to get some bigger, deeper air filters - ask Mr F.

Looks like a great job there Dale...Did they recommend the 1 3/4" primaries?

I let them have free reign to be honest. I don't know 'owt about manifods, but they do. I really don't mind if it's not 'absolutely the best possible design', it'll do for me.

I did tell them that I'd eventually upgrade the engine for fast road use, so maybe that's why they went for 1 3/4"? Opinion seems mixed anyway.

As Sean has said though, I need some better air 'in' now! :)

Yeah im sure they know what they are doing.........looks like a great job!!

You will have to get yourself a set of triple carbs now!!

I'm not convinced that they do know what they're doing with an L series engine - why haven't they joined the two pipes further back - especially if you said that you'd be upgrading the engine later ?

Why not go for twin 2"SUs instead, for road use they're more than adequate and keep the classic look ?

as long as you are happy with it Dale that is all that matters,it all looks very to me !!!!!

Looks good to me  there is too much bo**ocks talked on here about what is best, if you are after every last ounce of power from the engine then fair enough you may have to take some of the ba**ocks on board :D. Rob Gaskin has a GDS manifold on his reasonably mild car & leaves the Carlos Fandango's for dust . Dale as Sean has mentioned 2" SU's is another option for carbs, I had a moded 2.8 fitted with 2" SU's & GDS manifold & system once it was a beast of a car :D, but if you can afford triples they are worth it for the sound alone ;).

Well I made up the rest of the exhaust today.........all was well until I let the car down off the jacks.........one of the pipes is only 1 inch off the ground.............Forgot how low my car is!!
I'll have to try fix it tomorrow at some stage if I have time, But the sound is great

Unfortunately very little of that "opinion" is based on fact or real world experiance.....still, enjoy your new system Dale it looks well made
