Manifold design

..............if you say so.

My opinion (what whatever that's worth these days) is that it's better than the MSA 6-1, obviously better than a std one but that it doesn't cut it as a high performance part - ie for anyone looking for over 200bhp !

I noticed on most if not all the manifolds, that the collectors push up over the primaries. Is there any advantage to that apart from easier welding? Would it make a difference if they were the same size and just a butt weld?

Got my Flanges today in work, finish is great and everything seems to fit fine.

they look as if they are thick enough as some manifolds do not match up to the thickness of the inlet manifold which then means it is harder to get a good seal,i would have thought the push up over collectors are easier to weld and the difference in butt welding would not make much difference in the performance.

They are 12mm thick flanges which should be plenty thick, I want to try keep everything as a butt weld, I'll be purging the manifold when im welding it up so the inside will be clean and smooth.

Jay, sorry to be negative but you don't seem to have much width at some points to maintain a good seal. Why couldn't you follow the shape of the port?

These flanges have already been tries and tested without problems, the flange port is the same as the gasket, I f the flange were the same size as standard ports, it would restrict flow if headwork has been done, and will be done at some stage.

Sure Ill try them out for myself anyway, Only problem I noticed is that the centre flange doesn't leave alot of room between the pipes for welding.

I seem to remember (though could be wrong) when looking at my US Nismo made header, the primary pipes go through the flange hole/port and are welded on around the outside. The primary pipe (when through the flange) is not flush, just a fraction sticking out (e.g. towards the head). I think this is like that so when the header flange is tightened on the the head, the fraction of primary pipe "digs" into the gasket a little to give a greater seal. Therefore the header seals around the primary pipe edge and the flat side of the whole flange.

Probably more of a faf to do (making the round primaries go into a square hole of the flange), but I thought I would pass the correct (?) observation on.

Thanks for that Ian that makes more sense actually.........and much easier to weld too

Here is the manifold that was on my car some years ago....like I said before you can have it if you can get it collected.....it needs welding on 2 of the joints or you could chop it up :)

Thanks twoforty, I'll try make my own first and see how I get on.

I ordered the pipe for the primaries today through work. nearest I could get to 1 5/8" was 40.5mm ID, And has to come from the Uk, nowhere in Ireland has that "oddball" size.
Should have it by the end of next week, I'll make a start on it then.

Well finally got a chance today to make a start on the manifold.......primaries are 28", just have everything tacked now, I'll start to polish and weld later, the collectors still have to be done.

I wouldn't call it a copy of a JDM Nismo manifold as I only had 3 pics to work from, but its in the general area.

Oh I noticed the block on that old engine say's E30, whats that off?

Looks like you're off to a good start there Jay! Keep going and keep the pics coming. Building something from scratch must be a huge buzz when it's up and working. Can't wait to see more!

Slowly getting there, manifold is welded, just putting on the collectors now and then clean everything up.

Looks like nice solid welds there. Each part is taking shape nicely. You don't f*ck around do you? Get it done Japanese time!

Well it it more or less finished now, just the flanges to make up for the ends of the collectors, then the twin pipes down the rest of the car.
