German Cars

I'm currently considering changing my 370Z for a Granddad's car. I thought about an Audi for a while so my mind has been focused on them.

Wow there are a hell of a lot about!

So then I noticed Mercedes and BMW - we are surrounded by them.

In my 370 it is extremely rare that I see another in a month, however I see an Audi on average about every minute!

Ive noticed the same thing on the A1 every day.

I drive a VW amarok and the Mrs a mini.

I had a 1990's Audi A8 Quattro sport a while ago ... cost less than £1500 and what a car........... id have kept it if my garage was a LOT bigger

Is that a Grandad car?

By 'Granddad Car' I mean something with 4 doors, smooth ride and a big boot for the buggy etc. Also fairly economical for driving between home and my 'kid's' houses (50miles and 90 miles each way).

I also visit my 93 year old dad once a week (50 miles away).

Then there is the M-i-L who is 85 miles away (just about right ;) ).

Favourite at the moment is a Mazda 6.

A bit of German engineering, equals joy to the right foot :)

I keep looking at S4 Avants and RS4's deffo not a grandad car, take the dog in the back and go to the tip to :)

I know my german cars mate. What sort of thing are you looking at?

I think the German stuff is the obvious choice but, dare I say it a bit boring and common.
My 135Msport is a capable car but it’s just bland.

Some other alternatives

Well I've been looking at Audi A5/S5 Sportbacks, A6 Allroader (£ - top road tax though!) and a few mercs but I do like the Mazda 6. They are quite stylish, drive ok and have very economical diesel engines with enough 'punch' for me these days.

Bland - I don't mind something that's not exciting but it has to have steering feel, have a good autobox if poss., 4 doors, decent boot and a good looking dashboard (I do like my dashboards). Also black interior and seats - I'm not a fan of white or brown leather.

Another thing I want to get away from is nearly £500 road tax and 28.5 mpg on Super Unleaded. My 370Z is a great car but I'm paying a lot of money just to feel good.

Thought about a Jag Matt and I like the idae of buying British but they are a bit big.

Something non German badged worth considering is the Skoda Octavia esp the VRS model. Ticks all the boxes unless you are paranoid about badge snobbery.

I've had 5 Audi's, quattros' & avants (estates). I love'em! Imho they are a fantastic daily driver. Sticks to the road like glue, very comfortable(including my current quattro turbo injection sports line), well built, plenty of grunt, stop on a penny, loads of room for drum kits and such, stylish.

 :driving:

I Like the look of the Amorak, what are they like?

I bought this about 4 months ago and haven't looked back. Soooo much car for the money.

Fuel is averaging 21mpg with plenty of city driving, but for a 5.0 v8 and the pennies I paid for it, I'm happy spending a bit on fuel.

Hi Rahail

I swapped over from an S2000 so initially it was quite a shock... but I m looking at a another one when this is due.

Plenty of room, relatively economical too . I looked at all the other pick ups on the market and this was far and away the least agricultural. Doing a lot of motorway miles and its like a comfy car. My company owners wife just swapped her range rover sport for an 'ultimate edition' amarok with the 8 speed auto , and she loves it.

I've had a few problems with my more modern cars recently (computer A won't talk to computer B etc - all that canbus cr*p) so I've been looking at W124 Mercs... something like a late 80's/early 90's 260E... built to last, fairly economical but still a straight six, leather, aircon, modern classic etc... and no need for a PhD in electronics if it goes wrong. Sadly I think a lot of modern cars are time bombs in terms of reliability - ok when new and under warranty but after that there's an awful lot of fiddly wiring to go wrong!
