Engine on ebay

my absolute pet hate is that road/race camshaft description it's either road or race, when someone comes up with a profile that has stacks of torque at 2000 rpm and pulls to 8500 rpm strongly then i will believe it, rant over!!

I see the huge bid has been retracted surprisingly....but its probably worth the current bid even if it was broken and sold for the parts....

2 bidders have both retracted their bids within minutes of each other, highly suspect.
That combined with the misleading description which definitely gives the impression of a recent rebuild when in fact it was rebuilt 14 years ago!!!

Whats the consensus on the 'sale' price? The carbs are nice but will need a rebuild/jetting(at a guess), engine has been dormant for a while but I guess should be ok?

If nothing is broken and it just needs rebuilding it is a star buy especially if you are any good a building engines yourself.

Craig I'm still split on this one.
I think it's a gamble especially if it needs a rebuild top and bottom.
£1100 isnt cheap but with the safety net of the standard £500 for the triples it may not be all bad.

You're all treating this as a few hunks of metal bolted together - like an old company waiting to be broken up into parts, the sale of will realise more than the purchase price.

When will any Datsun history be appreciated for its' worth ? This engine has a history - it could continue having a history in the right car.........!

Does it have a Spike head on it ? if not can it be classed as a genuine Samuri engine ?

Do the three new ones built by DJR have Spike heads on, cos they are still called Samuri - even though some retired old boy in Spain has probably never been near 'em

what constitutes the right car Sean..??

Samuri or Samuri Conversions ?

Whatever, the engine has a history.

For once i have to agree with sean its got samuri histoy, i would have loved to put a 3.1 in my car, but if i had its not a samuri any more so i rebuilt what i had.

Very interesting.

Kevin Irons told me a while ago that he considered that I could call my car a Samuri.

The engine was built by him (or rather his builder) and I had a GDS manifold, Range Rover brakes, 2" SUs etc.

My car is not a Samuri really, it's a 'Gaskin'.

Also I have in the past considered selling my car (and may still do so). If no-one wanted it as it is I considered that I may break it up. Selling my car would be bad enough but destroying it and all it's history would be tragic. It is more than the sum of it's metal and fiberglass parts. If we only think of cars like that then we may as well go and buy a modern car.

Grey area indeed.
Well actually not that grey.
These cars to me are more a tribute IMO and at best can be described as new generation cars commissioned by spike.

what constitutes the right car Sean..??

Has to be a samuri ,one would presume,no??

I'm not gloryfing Spike or anyone else and I'm not putting down the other engine builders here, racers or rallyers and those who've swapped, those who've restored - basically those that love Zs !

I AM saying that we should not belittle what precious history we DO have of Zs in the UK (Europe too) for most of the important stuff happened elsewhere (imho).

Big Sam is not where it all stopped in the country....not even where it started.

I just can't see this engine as just a hunk of metal stuck together...maybe it's history isn't rich, there are others much more worthy and hopefully more (old and to be built) that will go on in the future to become worthy of some 'love' and respect.

I'm too tired to go on for more now - I don't want to convert/convince people - you either believe or not, you either want to feel part of some local heritage or not.

The right car would be one that is driven as the engine builder intended !
