Engine choices?

I would just get a NA RB25 which are cheap as chips in comparison mainly as all the drifters are tossing them out from their project cars in favour of LS and other mega power units...alternatively stick with Toyota if you want reliability 1UZFE. Again cheap and reliable.

I think so Terry. You do have to pull the engine apart though to change the pistons and I'm into factory seal stuff that's never been messed with. I was going to use the non turbo rb25 but you would still want to raise compression a little. I had one of these for 4 years and loved it. So silky smooth. Power is around 200 but the delivery is effortless. Would like to run it on carbs with maybe an edis ignition control but then economy goes out the window.

If you're happy to be uneconomical and only want 200, why not stick with the L? Must retain more value that way.

Crated LS and plenty of parts and advice out there.

I agree with Skiddy on the RB25 if you want to keep it in the family - don't go backwards and carb it.

I've been thinking the RB na route for so long now that it seams the only way to go. Especially as I'd keep the blue car so I dont need to chase power. The LS is a great option but you see too many of them in different engine bays and I like to be different. I like the idea of v8's from big german cars and they look good value for money.

I know carbs are a backward step for power and ecconomy but it looks so good on a modern engine.

Yeh, go for that John. Give the old girl a twin cam/four valve engine like the 432.

I always wanted to do the NA RB route right back in 2005 but in order to stay out of class 7 hybrid super mod (Hall Of Fame) I stayed away from it.

But for little money (comparatively) you could build a 250-300 hp twin cam cross flow on TB's
An equivalent L series would cost the same or significantly more

Donor engine + box
Rods, pistons
Head work
Decent header + some exhaust work
TB's
ECU
Bearings, gaskets etc
Cross member work etc

£3 K+ and you have a silky smooth setup with good torque (get that cr up to the high 11's or even 12’s)

If you felt a little richer go the RB26 route with solid lifters, the RB26 comes with individual TB's, buy an Emerald or a mega squirt kit and hey presto.

I believe that there are more RB conversions seen than LS but the other arguments stand for the RB and yes, carbs look nice but for a daily driver, go ITBs anyday. Change the cams cover for something 'classic' and play at being a Z432....ish.

What about a VQ35? Good strong engine.... will sit behind the front suspension struts (leaving plenty of space for turbos or supercharger) and with ITBs sounds just utterly silly :)

Has to be straight 6. Cant have turbo's or supercharger. Remember, I'm not looking for high HP, just smooth, effortless delivery of a reasonable amount of power and a cool looking engine bay.

I had always dismissed the RB26 for cost reasons but I will save on custom intake and throttle bodies which could offset its initial higher cost. Time to go for a chat with Ron Kiddell.

Are gearboxes easy to source then John?

I suppose that's one advantage of going away from an L Series.

Well you seemed to like the v8 idea... VQ35 is 300bhp out of the box, lightweight and will sit behind the front struts.... which should make for a great balance!

Are RB26s not designed to run with turbo(s)?

EDIT - had a quick look on the GTR forum

I keep hearing a BOV on this, but could be one of the other cars.... it sounds nice

Or convert a RB25DET neo from a R34 GTT
That uses solid lifters as stock and will take more revs for your na conversion
Get a late one and I believe they also come with an extended crank drive as stock for the oil pump
Smaller combustion chambers to so I assume easier to get the compression back up?
hmmmmm ;)

How's about a fat n/a DOHC RB30 !!

Now that would be ultra cool and I just happen to know for a bottom end :D
Built would have to be the only one in the uk shurly ?
RB25DE n/a head bolts straight on and away yah go ... simplezzz
