Different engines

ZHead I agree that £8000 is a substantial some of money but in the 21st century power league it is extremely reasonable for the package. Virtually unbeatable in fact. It will have more than 50 % power increase over the best Lseries engines and cost LESS money.
Dream on the rest of you!

all this talk has me thinking now,,,I can purchase a (dont anybody laff ) 5.7 litre Ford sb through their Svo operation, for around 8500.00 Canadian dollars. Hmm , engine weighs bout the same as the V6 I have at the moment and nearly triple the output.:p :D sterling to Can dollar is about 2.4 to the pound last I looked,,,,,kinda makes you think bout shipping costs?!:)>

Or for those who have a Rat Z in mind I still have a 9+ litre Ford big block,FT series (460 cube) N/Aspiration putting out 680 ft / pounds of torque@ 3200 rpm and around 425 Hp @ 4800. It still amazes me to this day what can be acomplished with a stroker crank and some judicious porting work and decent heads of course! ( gt 40 ) Course then you would be cutting grooves in the tarmac, it is a heavy beast! :D

How much torque????

"Oooooof" springs to mind again!

Very impressive figures. I wonder what that much weight would do to the handling of the car. Must be detrimental. Pretty awesome in a straight line though I would imagine.

Can but daydream for the time being....

Hi,Tony.Stop dreamin'....Your car's awesome as it is,& that's B4,
any 'secret' upgrade's post Enstone, If you go at
V6.V8 or 9 Litre direction's your front fog lights will
not be visable anymore.............DJZ 60.

Still, look at the way a 240z L6 with all the goodies does in racing all over the planet, most of the time in front... of V8... why would a 240z with a Z engine be better than a vette ????

Yes.
Boomer wasnt The whole point,& view that the 240 is light
& awesome why would anyone want to make it heavy & sluggish
as my 260z 2+2 is supposed to be?
" float like a butterfly,sting like a Zeeeeeeeeeee...DJZ 60.

Agree with you totally DJ ! I was just having some fun with the thought is all;) Probably handle like a wet sponge with a set of DAF lorry springs in the front ! :D

Does everyone forget that the Z [ 240 anyway ] has a 50/50 weight distribution which gives it the sort of handling that most modern car owners can only dream about. This is why it can hold its own in most race situations. A big lump of iron of what ever type just destroys the sheer pleasure of driving a balanced car.

Nigel, dont worry mate, they are only talking about it, not actually doing it.
Most of them havnt even got a 240 to do anything too!!!
BTW mate, I woz down at Motormec 2nite, anything happening to yours????

Slowly. Since body sandblasting the rear end of the car was found to be somewhat perforated ! In Laurences words, " like a planetarium " from underneath ! Makes me wonder about all the other " rust free cars ". Still, at least I'll have one of the strongest cars this side of Tanzania!

Not sure if this is taking thread back on track or off, but just saw this RB26 powered car for sale. Would be my dream car if RHD! go on.. someone in this country has to buy it!
I’m mildly thinking of selling my Z, New house takes a lot of my time and I now have a SX (sorry but I like air, power windows and a newer chassis) don’t know what to ask but I know I have over 20K US into it would like to get some where in the high teens for it…

Again don’t know.. If the price is right I will let it go.

It has a ton of aftermarket parts in it look here for a list and pic’s page two.

You should be mechanically inclined to own this car. I would also install a roll cage because a 400+ Zcar is a handful.

The car is not perfect it dose have its flaws. That can be fixed easy. i.e. getting turn signals working and more tuning for day to day driving. Just some small things.

The car runs 11.7 @ 117MPH will get into the tens with bigger turbos.

If you are serious e mail me

Awesome........................................................................DJZ 60.

240Z + SBC + sniff of NOS + old-fashioned slicks, damp track, Santa Pod 1988 or 1989 (the memories are clouding...) - back to back 10.50s at 126 and 130 mph. Refit street tyres and drive home with big grin fixed to face!

The older I get, the faster I was...

This was surely bait to tempt me to reply

Its quick , but still not in SBC territory. And all that Tec stuff to go wrong.

I won't go into the V8 vs RB26 debate here as I'm sure it has been done a thousand times. Both engines can make power depending on how much you want to spend, RB26 can make over 1000 bhp.

All that tec stuff to me just makes it more reliable and easier to work on. I would much rather tune a car using a laptop, and be safe in the knowledge if I make any mistakes I just have to reload the old map. I can also have different maps for different setups and fuel etc, which I can flick between.

for me though, I would rather have a modern technology, efficient, high revving engine, rather than old (although effective) technology. I also like the idea I can pootle around off boost and be fairly economic on fuel. I also can can effectively de-tune the car when I don't need the power at the touch of a boost control knob.

Also what is the reliability of a skyline like? pretty good I reckon

I think the main problem with either engine in making power is the strength of the driveline, which leads me to ask Mr.F what diff/driveshafts etc. he was using for his 10.5 sec car, must have been pretty strong to handle that!

I think for the price though the car looks like a good buy to me, with most of the hard work done. whether it had a 400hp v8 or turbo straight six i would be tempted if I had the money!

oh and here is a v nice car with a RB26, I've been told it is the quickest 1/4 mile s30 in Japan, would like it confirmed though. Looks like it could also be a good on the track too, which I would prefer to just straight line speed.. but not sure about the size of those front discs..

ps I would like to give credit to the owner and magazine this is in, but I don't know anything more than this pic which is from www.z31.com

240z you make a good point about laptops and reloading the last map etc, however, I like the idea of an old car with an old engine. I guess it is just different strokes for different folks, not all about horsepower or torque.

My main focus is copious quantities of grin factor that I have never yet had from the mercs or BM's I have had for business over the years.

Nigel...... 50/50....... great point. By using alloy heads, aluminium water pump, relocating the battery, lightened flywheel etc etc etc you can put the 50/50 balance pretty much back where it started but the whole car is 100 - 150 lbs heavier. Remember, the L series is actually quite a heavy engine in itself. Use proper suspension, properly corner weighted and no, I accept it will not be as nimble but it will still be pretty reasonable.

The subject of engine transplants is almost like a religious experience or holy war, people get very polarised - there is plenty of room for L series, RB26, Supra, SBC etc. The L Series will probably win at rally work, the others at drag racing - depends on what floats your boat.

Absolutely ZHead, in the end you go for what you want in your own car, whether it be engine transplants or body mods. I don't think anything is better than anything else. I just have preferences of what I like!

I also have to admint I never learnt how to balance carbs properly, so probably why I am scared, and prefer FI and programming!

Ended up with a F**d (they had to good for something) 9" with four link, Spax coil-overs and Strange shafts. I twisted the splined end off a set of standard F**d shafts on launch prior to this and the first try with Jaguar PowerLock wasn't up to handling slicks.
