Classic Jap show

Just got my first copy of Japanese Performance (still makes me want to buy a stock R32 !) and the list of Jap car shows grows !

I would enjoy Back To Basics and I would also support a Classic Jap car show with a cut off date !
What would be the date ? 1979
What would be the point ? Take a step back from the newer scene ! Under duress, one could extend the date to 1990 !

Ok, hit me !

The first and second dates aren't for excluding any specific cars !

What is the date after which Zs are no longer classified as 'classic' ? Discuss !

Surely, this event wouldn't be one for this club to support, under our "1 club ALL the cars" banner? That doesn't mean members shouldn't attend, but it's not a true "Z Club" event.

Correct me if I'm wrong ;), but this sounds like one for the "other" club.

As for the 1990 cutoff, sounds more like the launch year for the R32 to me!! ;) :D

As for which Z's are classics? Well, clearly, they all are.

I know, I'm going to be talking from a "biased" viewpoint, but think of it this way:

240/260/280z - Obviously.
280zx - Ditto.
Z31 - Retro 80's chic - another classic
Z32 - Of course, moden classic, the car that set the agenda for sports cars in the 90's and the performance benchmark.
Z33 - Anyone who doesn't recognise these beauties as a surefire future classic, has their head firmly up their backside, IMO.

There you go - how's that for 2 minutes thought? .. :D

now we all know 240Z 260Z is classic car,the others well matter of opioin, and before you start throwing things when you see me,ive had some of the others and think they are great cars, classic cars ?dont think so some how as nice as they are but each to there own and everyone is entitled to there opion,i saw a mk4 cortina 16L last week .is that a classic car, might get myself a 280zx to smoke around in,might try and win best borris again,im more proud of that trophy than the 3 best Zeds i got for my 260Z.OK boys with soft bums let me have it,give me more bumps and potholes,i love it,

MY opinion is that the earlier car,s 240/260 have the sexier curve,s in line with the E-type Jag,early Porche,Ferraris etc. These curve,s are reincorporated in the 350Z & recent Aston Martin,s etc.The 280zx moved on in it,s evolvement,& became alittle squarer as with car,s of it,s time. The 280zx,however still looked sweeter than the Escort,s or Cortina,s,and this carried on with the 300 series car,s. I believe Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if someone droll,s over your car wishing they could have it then it,s a classic.past, present or Future.....DJZ 60.

Define classic car ! Is an Allegro a classic 'cos it's more than 25 years old ?
My idea, a car that has an important role in motoring history, a consistant racing pedigree, a marketing success....
Any more ideas ?

I stick up for Status and say that the 'Z' shape (S30 for the count) is a classic and that the rest are 'hanger-ons' with the 350Z being a modern or future classic (according to whichever motoring magazine you subscribe) !
I loved the 300TT when it came out and still find it a fabulous car; I bought a 280ZX for Cathy and would be very happy to drive it every day and if I had to buy another Z it would be a Z31 turbo as it's an amazing car for the money ! But are they CLASSIC cars simply because they're accepted on classic car insurance policies ?

I'm going to run away and hide now !

cheers sean, still waiting to have my arse sacked.its a bit quiet, hmm, agree with djz about the curves, reminds me of me 2 months ago,the 280 still has the shape but in a slight more modern way.give me bumps and potholes any day

i think the 240Zs are classed as vintage being 25 years old and some of the 260Zs as the late ones you could class as classic.might go in for the London to Brighton run next year,is there a cut off date.Wot are my chances of winning

I already did the Classic London to Brighton, overtook everything and stuffed my face from a large hamper that fitted perfectly behind my classic seats on my classic parcel shelf !
If you only use first gear, you're gonna scare 'em mate !

Hi,
To me a "classic" is the car you dreamt of owning when you were a child or youth!
In my case, Nissans or Datsuns, didn't get a look in, as my dream car , pre 1979 or any other year, was the Jensen Interceptor from West Brom!
I first saw one, waiting for the ferry back to Blighty, from France, in the early '70s.It had steam swirling from the bonnett vents, as it had overheated, trying to make the ferry in time!:D
I like 280ZXs and Z31's and Z32's, but I don't consider them to be particular "Classics".The earlier Z's aren't my cup of tea, anyway!
Funds permitting, I would still like to own a 7.2L mk3 Interceptor!
:D
Cheerz,
JEZ

Now we're getting some where - and I have to admit, the local garage owner who rolled up in a 1975 260 was one of the first cars to really fuel my imagination as an impressionable 4 year old - but that's probably a bit too personal to define "classic" as a genre per se, IMO.

Any classic design, to my mind is one that represents some kind of watershed .. the Z probably qualifies this as much as anything because of the sheer numbers it sold, especially in the US.

Moreover, I have no doubt that the Z32 is already a classic, if you think back to it's year of introduction it re-defined the Japanese agenda, and all the lesser facsimiles that followed (Mitsi GTO, Supra, Subaru SV-X and to a lesser extent RX-7) were all trying to catch-up with the lead given by Nissan.

Another school of thought might be that any car (or anything else for that matter), that achieves a cult following because of its design or brand (Z), should also be classed as a classic - so, yes, I guess an Allegro could also be classed as a classic - especially in desirable Vanden-Plas spec!! (joke). We have a Z club, catering for enthusiasts of all the Z lineage, so by this logic they're all classics ...

Perhaps I'll shut up now.. :D

BTW, good topic, Sean - it's a bit like an automotive A-level, although I guess these days it would be classed as degree-level (ouch!) .. :D

I'll have to award you a D minus though, so far!! "Hangers on" indeed .. ;) :D

Jez 300,i sold my Intercepter 3 years ago, good car once you get above 50mph,smooths out a bit,get to 80mph and they just leave those little boys in their cosworth toys, i had the 7.2 althought the smaller engined Jensen is a bit quicker, best get the SP model if you get one,and yes,you can watch that fuel gauge move, wanted one since i was 8 years old, done it,next car ive allways wanted is a 911,probably next year

"Fishin hell, Geezer,s ,got more car,s than Jamariqui,& Rod Stewart put together! And I had to Stop him from buying nice, silver 2-seater Z At Billing. If it were,nt for public liability,Status would have made the new aquisition on the spot.....He know,s How to live...............DJZ 60.

Its just that my double garage is full with zeds and the single one is empty, need something to fill it,but then im moving so might only have a double when that happens, but then i have the use of dorris garage as she is gonner rent her house when that happens so could still be game on,i can feel a 911 getting close

Hi,
Aahh! the "six pack" model...yes please!:D
Cheerz,

Jez - thanks for your honest opinion !

Sorry guys, but in my opinion, 911s are seriously overrated and are only appreciable as one of THE recognised status symbols !
I probably saw too many of them in London in the Eighties when all the brokers made good from Essex and successful Estate Agents ran around in them ! Those that hadn't quite made it drove convertible series 3 BMs ! The bankers drove 328s or Testa-Rossas !
One of the best reasons for driving Zeds is because they're under-rated and rarer than all the above !

As for Jensens, give me a CV-8 !

If you forced a Porsche on me (did you know btw, that over here, even Porsche is pronounced Porsh !), I'd take a 928 S4 !

Doesn't get us any closer to what a classic is and do Zeds after 1978 class as 'em ?

Ok here´s my thoughts on "classics". They fall into the following catagories.
1. Highly desirable - 240z & 260z are certainly in here, also Toyota 2000GT, Honda S800, etc
2. Rarities - Maybe Mazda Rx7 & my Nissan Silvia
3. Motoring milestones - NSu Ro 80, Citroen DS, Model T Ford, etc
4. Crap - Should have been sent to the great scrap yard cn the sky as soon as they came out of the factory doors - Allegros, Princess´s, Morris Marinas, Reliant ****ing Robins, etc, etc.
& as Forest would say "thats all that I have to say about that "
