Bought another classic motor!

Well I know you will all think I am barmy, but I have bought another classic motor as a stable-mate for my 260Z.
I wanted a 70s saloon which would seat four if we went out with friends, but it also had to have a decent engine in it that had a bit of grunt.
Anyway, I have bought a 1972 Rover 3500S - it has a lovely V8 under the bonnet that sounds fantastic, and being the S it has the manual gearbox.
Bought it two weeks ago in Southern Ireland, drove it to the ferry at Dublin, crossed the Irish Sea and then drove it home from Holyhead.
Last week decided to take a chance and use it for our holiday to Cornwall - it got us all the way there and back without missing a beat. A 1,015-mile round trip.
I would never part with the Z, and will still drive it a lot, but at least I have another car to share the load - and they are both very different driving experiences.
Anyway, here are a couple of pics. Though I suspect you Z maniacs will probably hate it. Each to their own eh?

No, I don't think you're barmy BUT, I would always have chosen a 2200TC over the V8.

Years ago in London when I had my first 240Z, I had a 2000SC (because I bought it for £50 in Tottenham) and towed it across London to Penge.......with the Z !

Mevagissey?

Brilliant - yes it is! Here is another shot taken in the same place. A better picture of the place than the car though (but you can still spot it)! We were actually staying in nearby Fowey.

My uncle lives in one of the houses at the top of the hill. Beautiful little place.
Lovely looking car. Has a certain presence about it that is sadly lacking in most modern day cars

Class,I've had 5 of em,thinking about another, you can tweak them just a little to make them an even better car to drive

A friend of mine uses one in Classic road rallies, goes like a bomb, apparently the Aussies do lots of tuning bits and chassis reinforcing bits for them, if you want to make it a bit more lively :)

Riddler, a lovely classy car. Why would anyone criticise you for buying a classic family car and going on a holiday to Cornwall?

Perhaps you need a drive over to me in it one Friday?

I suppose you will get a Touring Car driver like Jason Plato to take it around Oulton Park.

Good on you for buying and driving another classic car Rob. I can't say it's to my taste personally but it looks a good 'un.

Oh, and you can swap that tartan blanket over to the Rover now too ;)

Thanks for the positive comments. It is not as mint as my Z - but neither is it worth as much. It looks good and the interior is great but it has had a fair bit of bodywork done here and there over the years and will no doubt need more as time goes on as things reveal themselves. BUT - it runs nicely, and even though it chucked it down on the way home, it didn't appear to let any water in!
And in answer to your question Sean, on the run down from Cheshire to Cornwall it returned 28.4 mpg which was better than I expected!

Very nice, congrats on your new purchase.

Amazing mpg too especially since it's a V8, good to see old cars being used and enjoyed.

Not sat in a 3500 but I have been driven around in a friends Rover P5B not so long ago and was so impressed with how comfortable she was, and the V8 noise is a great soundtrack. One would be in my dream garage.

I think my car, which is the P6 3500, has the same engine in it as the P5, which originally derived from the Buick. That engine has been used in all sorts of cars - including Range Rovers I think. But I would get better mpg because the P5 is a much bigger, heavier car. The P5 is lovely though - so much room inside and a real chairman-of-the-board vehicle. I particularly like the coupe version of it with the slightly lower roofline.

It is the same engine,Range Rover used it up until it was. 3.9 I think ,also Tvr have used it,good upgrade is an sd1 head and 10 percent updated springs all round, totally different car to drive, got a set of S trims for sale if interested

Very nice, good choice. If you have done all those miles already, you have got a good one.
