One doesn't have to be a committee member to do something for the club (in fact you mean its' members) BUT it helps !
The committee needs new blood, different approaches to the same old problems, perhaps less cynicsim (when one has organised an event or two with limited turnout, it does get discouraging) - fresh enthusiasm and different experiences !
It doesn't matter that you have no prior experience of clubs/committees etc - what is necessary is wanting to do something and having the determination to make that work, all in a team environment ( and don't think that it's always easy, trying to sell your idea AND getting help to support it) !
Finally, the reward is to yourself and it is you that'll feel congratulated (by yourself) for having achieved something, for having pushed yourself a bit further !
Example, I joined the committee after less than 6 months in the club, I started organising events, calling up people and gradually created bigger events and was appointed Chairman - all this, from Sean who was basically a bit shy but determined ! What did I gain ? A lot of confidence, friends and the pleasure of seeing others have a great time !
Don't take on a committee post to be awarded something, or even to help the club, what you get out of your time and effort is what you put in, like anything in life !
Final advice, if you want to do something integral in the club, go for it - don't wait for volunteers to retire, say that you want to get on and discuss your role with the committee ! It's not a closed shop - non-committee members can be invited along, they just can't vote until voted on themselves ! In short, get up off your chair now, don't wait to be asked !
If I was over there, I'd welcome the next committee meeting at my place - you could offer the same !!!
