Advice needed on getting all work done by 1 garage..

Hi all,

I'm planning out the order of the work I want to do on my 280z when it finally arrives, and just have some questions for you more experienced chaps.

The car currently has the classic 4x4 look now the weighty bumpers have been removed:

I'm planning to go down the BC coilovers route, which will obviously mean the hubs have to come off and be taken somewhere for welding. I was thinking I could try and tackle this myself, but then I thought this would also be a good time to get a full bush kit installed, and maybe the subframes, control arms etc powder coated?

So rather than get the car on axle stands in my garage and trying (and probably failing) to get the hubs off and all the other parts off myself, I'm thinking it would probably make more sense to take it to a professional and have all this work done at once?

Am I likely to find a reputable garage who can do the welding properly, as well as powder coating all the parts before putting them back on? I'm scared of someone messing up the welding part! Should I look for a classic car specialist, or what kind of garage/business?

@richiep I know you kindly offered to do the welding for me, but if I'm probably going to be getting bushes done at the same time, I think the car really needs to be at the same place doing the welding really (rather than me bringing the hubs to you).

And I'm thinking I should already have the new wheels on at this point, in order to be able to get the ride height/arch gap how I'd like it, right? They will likely be 15x8 Rota RKRs with 205/50 tyres.

I would imagine most garages would farm out a powder coating job, then you would pay them as a middle man.
The front suspension is easy enough to strip down but the rear can be more challenging, especially the spindle pins and stub axles.

Yeah get yerself a set of spindle pins and the garage will have to be able to leave the car where it is so they need to have a spare ramp free for possibly a few weeks that they don’t need whilst you stuff is away

Yeah I was thinking the same re: powder coating. I guess my re-worded question then is can I trust any old garage with the welding of the coilovers bit, or should I look for a specialist 'classic' place?

I've tried enough times with my M3 and Mini to know I don't have the skills/knowledge/tools to strip suspension down! There's always something that brings proceedings to an angry and frustrated halt, and then a pride-swallowing putting back together and taking of car to a professional.

I'm going to stick to cosmetic/interior and maybe some light engine work (not planning on that but just expecting it to be inevitable).

Yeah so that makes me think it would be better taken to a kind of classics restoration place that are used to and have the space to have cars sitting about for a while.

What's the deal with these spindles, you've both mentioned those?! Do they need replacing when the hubs come off?

Nearer the time I guess I'm going to need to ask you lot for a list of parts like this that I'll need to gather together when this job finally comes around!

As they e been on the car from day one they sometimes need heating up to get out then you have to smash the shit out of em to get out

It's not always like that - mine came out easy enough with a puller tool.

Thanks Jon. I'm definitely more at the novice end for this kind of work though, with a pretty poor selection of tools to match! I've attempted things like spring/strut/bush changes on my cars before and I always get stuck and have to give up.

I just think if I'm getting everything powder coated too, I may as well have someone take it all apart and put it back together for me in one go :)

FOURWAYS ENGINEERING near Borough Green in Kent would be able to do the whole job for you. They have fitted multiple sets of BC coilovers to customer cars and have a tame blaster & powder coater nearby. Recommended.

Why not give them a call/send them an e-mail and at least get a rough idea of what it would cost?

Unfortunately a very long way from me - I should have said I'm in Manchester! :)

Somewhere like that would be ideal, but in the north and with northern prices 😂

But yeah I could always get a quote I suppose. Would make me feel better when I get a quote from a local place!

There's a range of classic specialist garages and restorers in and around Manchester and down around me in Cheshire. Start with a bit of Googling and go from there.

Generally, blasting and powder coating isn't going to be done in house unless its one of the higher end specialist restorers with everything on tap - which will cost. I do however know two good blasters/powder coaters (one in Stockport/Cheadle, one here in Macc) who I recommend once the parts are off the car. Turnaround is usually just a couple of days, week at most.

When the car arrives, we can arrange me coming over for a look and I can go through with you everything that I see, what needs doing, order of work, etc. Then you can plan things more effectively in order of importance and cost!

Ahh mate that would be amazingly kind of you, thank you! Thank you so much.

With the welding for the coilovers, how would any place I take it know what they have to do there, exactly? E.g. how much to cut, what angle to weld on etc? I only ask the latter as I read a thread where someone got theirs welded but one strut turned out to be done at a slightly wonky angle!

I did do some googlage last night. Found these ones in Manchester, which look promising. Seem to be small outfits run by enthusiasts with a history of classics restoration.

Belsize Garage

Nash Autos

Burton motor company

Nigel Grant Motor Engineers

But if anyone's got any other recommendations for the area please let me know.

Ideally it'd be nice to not have to leave the car a long way away, but if it turns out the best option is somewhere down in Cheshire then so be it.

I used Fourways a few times when Geoff was alive but not sure if they still do full refurbs any more.
