Maybe this thread will gain traction, maybe it won't!

Hopefully it hasn't been done before.

Essentially, I'm intrigued as to what you've all owned before. We know about the Zs, but what else have you had - The good, the bad and the ugly!

We have members who are young, and those who are young at heart, who are all brought together by our fondness of Zs and presumably other cars too.

Getting to the stage of owning a Datsun, for most, has been a journey, and like all good journeys there are high points and lows - plenty of blood, sweat and tears.

There'll be some who have owned some cracking vehicles over the years, whilst others will have purchased absolute lemons. Some cars will be feats of engineering, whilst there'll be others which should never have left the forecourt.

So, show us what you've got (or had) and let's have a laugh (or a cry)!

What inspired this?

A few years ago, I'd started to earn some decent money and decided I wanted something fun, but with 2 key requirements: Bluetooth and cruise control, to assist with the number of miles I was doing.

So I excitedly rushed to purchase a 2010 Polo GTI. Because I like VWs, and because GTIs were (obviously) very cool.

However....

It had no bluetooth.
It had no cruise control.

Additionally, the auto gearbox was HORRENDOUS, the seat killed my back (I still have problems today!) and my favourite part....

It drunk a litre of oil every 500 miles - VW claiming this was 'normal'! Pulling over on the way to work, suited and booted to top up with 10W40 was not a good look. Half asleep, I once missed the funnel a bit, pouring some oil on the block. I had to leave it smoking in the car park!

So, with (very little) regret, I moved it on a couple of years later.

Though I still think back with fond memories of the tartan pattern seats and the Tornado Red paint

I even laugh now, as I remember locking both sets of keys, my house key, phone and wallet in the boot within an hour of ownership.

You'll be missed, you little bag of spanners!

Being young I think mines pretty standard:
1994 1.3l mk3 fiesta in red
2006 1.25l mk5 Fiesta zetec in black
2008 1.4l mk5 fiesta zetec in blue
2013 1.6l Nissan qashqai +2 tekka in white

I have a soft spot for a fiesta, my sisters got a mk7 1.0litre eco boost which is fun to drive

Now driving a white transit van mostly. Its a trend model so, has heated seats and the like.
I'd like to say I'm driving my 240z but, waiting for the weather to improve.

Pretty short list I'm afraid as I tend to hold on to cars for ages too...
'87 Suzuki SJ410 Santana 4x4 (known affectionately by all my mates at the time as "The Skip" or "The Jalopy". Bastards.)
'89 Citroen AX GT (I loved that car and still wish I had it. Mental little tin can. Fondest memory - driving from Acton in W. London to my parents in Derby in under 90 mins - three figures on the M1 all the way!)
'71 Nissan S30 Fairlady Z-L. Had it ever since. Daily driver for three seasons of the year (on dry days) until I took it off the road and re-restored it. Now a pampered toy!

'98 Hyundai Coupe SE
'00 Honda DC2 Integra TypeR
'04 Honda EP3 Civic TypeR (the current much loved daily)

'72 Datsun 240Z, ex-CA car, aka Project Dixie. Being rebuilt in the style of a Japanese market HS30 Fairlady 240Z-L.

Oh man, fun thread idea!

Such a variety of vehicles from you all, I'm amazed about the numbers of vehicles some of you have owned.

Ok, first one for me was a
Ford Escort Ghia 2.0 Auto 1978 (I think) in Gold Metallic with a Brown vinyl roof. Bought it when I studied one semester in Australia, it was a junker. No photos sadly

My 2nd car, which I still have is my mothers 1972 MGB GT. I used that as a summer car for a few years. Looked like it was in a great condition, untis I dug deeper into the sills...
L2nRXCdl.jpg

So one thing led to another....
tHAhyjCl.jpg

Into deep now :D

First "proper"/daily driver was a 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman. Bought it new, and drove it 60k miles. It was a piece of shit, it lived 10% of it's life in the shop. The whole engine was replaced, tons of oil leaks, electrical gremlins. Once the windows opened by them selves in a snow storm. No joke...

dV1z6Zpl.jpg

The Mini was replaced in 2012 with a 2009 370Z which I used all year for three years. I loved that car:
kOtlZ9el.jpg

0t2e73cl.jpg

During the 370Z ownership I bought this one as a summer/track car:
yyYaxUFl.jpg

2014 BMW M4 with the M-DCT. Fantastic car, such a beast yet perfectly comfortable as a daily driver if you want. Never drove it in winter though.

Then I got kids, so the 370 had to go. Being a responsible family man I did the best I could. Hey, it's got 4 doors!
0VF8W1xl.jpg

2015 STi. This car was a BEAST.

It took my and my family of two kids now everywhere. It drove like a proper rally car in slippery conditions. I think this is by far the most allround capable car I will ever own. Although, it was very raw.

u4mgVIcl.jpg

These two complimented each other very well!
nRoRRnyl.jpg

Sold the M4 last year, funded the 280Z with upgrades. The M4 was too modern and big as a summer/enthusiast car, and the urge for a Datsun was too big.

So, this brings us to the current line up. My wife needed a car, so we bought a 2010 MB S350 4matic. Gear car, very comfortable. Found it in Germany, one owner and 25000k miles on the clock.
4z8CnBCl.jpg

The STi is gone, and I got this in October:
7hqXLj2l.jpg

The M2 is actually more fun than the M4. Not as powerful, but it has more character, and a manual!

Sold it cheap because the ABS was faulty to a couple of youngish lads, and they used it in a robbery that same day! had the police knocking on my door because obviously i was still the registered keeper!

Loving stories like this - more of these please!

I'll do my car history in a bit....less exciting than many of yours, but each car I've owned gives me an appreciation for the others!

Really pleased this thread is taking off and hope you're all enjoying it as much as me!

Some very interesting cars you've all owned!

If we're telling stories as well, in the red fiesta, when I was 19 years old, me and my mates would go exploring Bristol and the surrounding countryside at night.
One day, we were driving over the suspension bridge (not a lot of people know of this bridge's existence).

My mate in the car in front just paid the bridge toll and as he goes goes through, my other mate in my passenger seat says 'floor it Mart!' as a joke.

As I put my foot down, the car judders into life, albeit slowly.

The barrier comes down and 'Twang!' it pops off and is thrown aside.

My mates and I pull over up ahead and they couldn't stop laughing. Meanwhile I'm panicking as to what to do and it took them a good while to stop laughing.

It was both the most embarrassing thing ever and the most memorable.

Went back to the security office to apologise and didn't get into trouble, no fine, and didn't pay the bridge toll.

My mates still bring it up from time to time, even now. Good Times.

My first motor was a 2.0 diesel golf with 185,000 on the clock. It weighed a ton, and hardly moved, but it got me from A to B and gave me independence, so it was the best car on earth to me at the time.

I fitted a stereo and subwoofer, because I could. For a joke, I rigged up a ton of ebuyer blue neon lights on the inside.

DSCN3109.JPG

PHWOARRRRRRR!

I nearly wrote it off a couple of times, driving it like it was a far sportier car than it was. Eventually it got scrapped (real shame, as there was nothing wrong with it bar the clutch needing replacing).

Later I got hold of a VW Fox 1.2 .. It handled like a blancmange, but that meant you could practically ignore speedbumps! It also pulled a mean handbrake turn because of how top heavy it was. I recall them using it on Top Gear for 'car football' and would say it's the perfect car for it.

I picked up a friend's Mazda MX-5 1.8IS that I still have to this day. I love that car. I can't bear to part with it, despite it not being on the road for a good number of years now. It has the usual rust in the arches and I may do something with it once I've finished the Datsun (ha!). Here is my friend displaying the practicality and size of the bootspace:

DSC00016.jpg

I briefly had an Mk3 Ibiza FR, which was great until it took a whack and was written off.

2000 model Polo 1.4TDI after that. Whilst basic, I loved its practicality and the little turbo just kept pulling!

The aforementioned Polo GTI followed.

Then I grew up and bought a new 2014 Mazda3. Probably the most practical car I've owned, and great value for money.

My 240z has been with me for almost 2 years - This year will be the year it sees the road (honest!)

Recently I wanted something a bit sportier than the Mazda, and ended up with the Golf R I've got now
