LiamR's 280z Restomod - SR20DET to RB25DET

Hey Liam, I’m sure many of us on the forum will be following your build with interest and watching Ste’s updates on YouTube. Best of luck with the rebuild. As one of the guys said earlier, just a series of small jobs :) Feel for you, as none of us want to find those sort of things, but you won’t be the only Z owner doing lots of welding. Onwards and upwards and all that. It will all be worth the effort! Graeme

Nothing much to update as the car is locked away in the garage. The garage is part of the RAF buildings so in accordance with the government's lockdown crap, the buildings have been locked down also.

I have however just had an interesting conversation with Romas from DCW Classic.

I was trying to source a whole right rear quarter and he asked me to PM him as he has a few. Now about 3 messages in he says 'Arent you the guy that has 2 welded together?'... to which I reply 'Yes.. unfortunately.' A few words back and forth and he says that the shell is pretty much scrap as most of the alignment will be out and the chassis will be twisted, given the poor repair to the front quarter. We spoke about the replacement panels I have coming from Andy at APS and he agrees that if I have the time, money and patience then its doable but to make sure I have it placed on a jig before I attempt ANYTHING.

What are your thoughts?

Anyone know of somewhere that has the ability to do this and is familiar with the Z? Rough costs involved etc?

Weighing up my options with cost of doing this vs new rolling shell.

If anyone knows of a cheap rolling shell, I'm all ears!

did you drive it before you stripped it down? I would think if it drove ok it is ok. But the FSM does have lots of frame measurements so you could measure it up rather than guess.

Yes mate,

Car drove spot on and was a nice car to drive. It looked immaculate from the outside.

I need to get a 280z FSM to get these measurements you speak of.

Liam, you know my opinion. The fact that Romas knows you as the guy who has 2 shells welded together says it all. I'm really sorry for you but that will always be the case. Lots of people have done extensive repairs to their cars e.g. Ian but 2 shells gives it a stigma you don't want.

IMO that shell is scrap.

Get another 280 shell. It's the only way to have something you can be proud of, saleable and safe.

I totally agree. As soon as he said that I was like FFS

I’d not be offering anywhere near the asking price however.

Yes. That shell is going to need a lot of work. Look how rusty the interior was before the blasting; if the car is that rusty inside, imagine how the exterior and inside the box sections were / are.

Right, so I've been frantically messaging and responding to people regarding a shell.

I'm going to re-shell it. Not sure which shell, but I'm going to have to get a new one. Spoke to the missus tonight and as soon as she told me, "I'd never feel safe being in that car, knowing what it's like" I knew that was it. She has given me the thumbs up to source a new shell and spend my money! Who would have thought it eh! haha.

I've been offered quite a few believe it or not. That 240z one is such an unrealistic price. Yes its been blasted but 13k... No thanks.

The reason I was going to stick with a 280z was because I have literally EVERYTHING to rebuild the 280z.
