Drag Challenge Prize Fund

We need a bit of banter and it's a way of finding out what people are thinking.

The Drag Challenge is superb, I have only had one day at the Pod but thoroughly enjoyed it and will return. I underestimated how hard it was to get below 15secs!

I just didn't understand the prize fund thing. I doubt if money will attract anybody I think you are either interested and will have a go or not.

My thinking too.....I raced bikes for tin trophies....ok there was a prize fund, but that wouldn't buy a set of tyres.....its the taking part and the heart pumping in your mouth that floated my boat.Oh and of course the social side, camping, tartan rugs etc. Perhaps the single day and no overnight with a tartan rug is the reason for the piss poor attendance?
Maybe the flat cap brigade should look into it.

I have no science behind this, nor have I polled anyone for their opinions so I could be WAY wide of the mark but I suspect that one of the reasons that more people don't want to enter the drag challenge is pride and fear.

It takes some bottle to have spent a lot of time and money on a car then mercilessly rag it flat out. The fear factor comes from "what happens if it blows up ?" or maybe "what if I lose and look a plonker ?"

A lot of people are convinced in their own head that they have a fire breathing performance car and they don't NEED to prove it, they KNOW their car is the fastest- those thoughts could be confirmed or shattered on the black top dyno, people could have their egos SEVERELY deflated, crushed even, so don't want to try.

For example, I ran 286BHP and did very respectably in my BMW, I upped it's power to 333BHP and torque to 552 ft lbs and ran SLOWER because I had not grasped how to do it properly. It was fantastic fun though even if I did look a bit of a tit and went home disappointed with my tail between my legs. A lot of people would take that sort of thing to heart and get very down about it. It's only a bit of fun at the end of the day - I even had a good day on the occasions I did not run at all. We had coffee, burgers, chatted, took the michael out of each other, played totty spotting, looked at some seriously nice cars ..... all in all a good time.

I will try to attend some of the other events like Billing etc to widen my horizonns, if we all try that we might get somewhere and have some fun.

It'z all in the 'having a go', & not what you're seen as. Comradery can be embroiled anywhere,so it
doe'snt matter what the setting is. I've met most of the poster'z above & they are a good breed,&
a fun bunch of gays. O.k not everyone likes, what the other find'z interesting, but given space the
whole envoirenment becomes positive. I more than anyone, get 'worked up' or cranked up,when I
feel someone'z poking or slacking, but this is too trivial & small an issue.
Just put on yer best kilt,& flash those winning conker'z & buy each other a drink
I've looked a plonker! load'z of time'z (especially at Billing,the 1st time I filmed) I had a montrous
Hired camera, huge & it weighed the equivilent Of Porkenstein & Derek after they have just eaten!
Who Care'zz? Happenin' day'z DJZ 60.

Be nice to see a few of those Zed hill climber cars go up the strip
Or maybe even a Zed rally car?
Just to see how they go - side by side comp with a stocko road car

The more the merrier n more the interest
Plus make some great video :D

Wynn I would love to get to some of the meets at santa pod but they always seem to clash with one of the 10 hillclimbs that we do each year or one of the 5 weekends in 8 that I end up working.

When we took the car up to bruntingthorpe for the mag shoot we had a great time and while I personally dont get such a buzz out of the 1/4 mile straight as I do out of straights corners and hills combined, the 2 runs each that Dee and I did showed that the Dee would be quite competitive. She hit the 14sec 1st time out.

As for the prize money fund, in my experience once the prize becomes financial as oppossed to a trophy then the friendlyness starts to dissappear from the sport. Watch people playing pool/darts/cards for money or drinks in a pub and the atmosphere changes as one player starts losing.

For 15 years I have been trying to drum up support from the club to come to a hillclimb just as some moral support and apart from the faithful few it has been to no avail. You just have to accept that some members want different things from thier cars/clubs/life.

I take my hat off to the polishers/racers/rallyists/hillclimbers/picnicers and car owners for enjoying time with their cars, but have to say that in my opinion some of the aggressive "banter" that goes on within some threads does nothing to encourage people to join our "friendly one club all the cars" club

I shall be joining the polisher/picnicer clan on saturday at Japfest (still peed off that I cant take the car round the track) and look forward to meeting those that turn up and want to socialize.

I'm going back into the garage now

Hi Ben. I look forwards to catching up with yourself,Dee & others at The Hillclimb Events.I try to
be at varying events, but do have some dates that tend to clash. The Hillclimb,is an absolutely
amazing event,& is a sport that is far more rewarding & skillful than the title image conveys.
I have edited footage of this,Its not to be missed. Santa pod. I've filmed that too
& its yet another awesome,& exilerating experience. Don't miss it. DJZ 60.

Hi Dalos. . .Why'z it coming out of yer nose ? havent ya gotch a kettle? lol DJZ 60.

Well if you ever do find the time make sure you let us know
Be ace to look over your car n see it side by side go up against a stock Zed

Wow, there's a lot of heat in this thread. The brutish smell of men shooting out hot jets of man foam all over the place. It's quite something. The thread started off quite innocently and turned pretty quickly into pantomime for some reason. I'm not gonna pretend to have the answers because I don't (unless I do) but what about this... The Drag Challenge is awesome. I've not been to a Z one but I've been to the 'pod and it is superb, plus the DJz footage was also really exciting...

See where I'm going yet (nothing up my sleeve).

Becoming a "hall of famer", searching for ways to shave off the 10th by whatever means necessary, tearing down the blacktop with yer boot firmly on the floor and occasionally getting it. That's what the drag race guys do. And keep on doing it. And it's really frickin cool!

Anyone yet..? No..?

It's kind of extreme sports to take something that you hope is gonna hold together and give it the full beans in the hope it'll get you that extra kudos. It's what sports / race cars are for. Basic engineering being tw*tted as hard as possible to get the best result. You can't knock anyone for that. Adrenaline is king. It's really simple.

Here it comes... Get to the point you fat t*sser

Why not get a member (ha, he said member) who's there to film a few of the runs (even if it's only phone cam quality) so that we could all see the fiercly loyal Z clubsters doing their thing. We could have it on the front page so that it plays when you hover over it or something. Going for fame. That's really cool. I reckon if people could see it easily they might even think of driving down there (even if it's just to watch). Support for all aspects of the club is really important and if it means having a blinding day out then even better.

People who enjoy the social aspect of being in a car club, where the car is great, it's your pride and joy and all that, are gonna want to keep it reasonably tidy and try not to shed engine / transmission / body parts on the way home. And there's nothing wrong with that either. I'm going to Japfest this weekend and I got so super-pumped thinking about it that some wee came out. You can't bash people for wanting different things from their cars. It's as fickle outside of the club (in real life...) as it is inside. But it doesn't change the facts that our dragsters are very cool and that we should occasionally go and see them doing their thing.

I will be withdrawing requests of sponsorship from our traders and other outside bodies for the Drag Challenge prize fund.
As mentioned, the prize fund was started in an effort to boost attendance, and following a chat with participants from yesterdays meeting, it was deemed no longer necessary.

Speaking to those generous to donate as a result of this thread, all are happy for the money to fund this years trophies instead.

(Steve Burns - you will need to re-edit Mike Feeney's latest thread)
