Wrapping..and Paint.

Idiotsforgolf.. has been looking for a body to do the painting on his Z.. one reply you may have seen is an alternative or addition is to have the Z wrapped in coloured cling film or a derivative of.
I know cling film is designed to keep food fresh.. but would it do the same for a Z's paintwork.. :D

On a serious note. I have been looking at various wrapping companies and I do and don't like what i have seen so far. I was wondering if any one has had this done to a Z.. I can see that you could do either standard colours and then some really funky stuff.. graphics and the like.. have you had any experience of it?

I too will be looking for a painter in a few months time.. once I get all the panels lined up. So if any Z owner in the Yorkshire area knows of one let me know..

Our own Funkyboogaloo on 300zx-club runs a vehicle wrapping company. He just completed a Z32 in metalic grey, I have seen it in person and it looks very good.

Thanks Marco, that is my 300 ZX you are on about.

The paint work under the wrap has to good, ie no rust spots or dents etc. If there are any then they need repairing first. I have uploaded some pics on here of it being done. Have a look at my album here.

You can contact the guy who did it here www.veiledimage.co.uk or PM funkybooogalooo on here.

I never realised this could be done, it's quite impressive - what is the approx cost, cheaper than painting?

I didn't have it done into the door shuts as that is more expensive.

At the end of the day it cost less than a full respray would have done.

You are best contacting Mike about it really.

AH you see... I knew something that Rob did not...
I think the car looks superb.. me want one.
I am considering doing the Z... I will have to paint it first... Dulux and a bog brush should do it.. lol..
We have just painted the kitchen in matt emulsion.. would that do?.... ONLY KIDDING..

Looks impressive coopers-swb!
What is that stuff like to fix?
ie, if the wife misses the door lock and carves a gash down the door (only joking girls).
but can you blend a repair or is it a new 'skin'.

the thing is that you could peel the stuff off and re do the door.

No blending of paint or matching etc.

You don't, as far as I know have to have the car painted for it to be fitted. Primer is good enough, see my bumper. Obviously the smoother the finish underneath the better the wrap will look, much like painting.

D you mean a layman could peel it off and redo it or do you have to have lots of experience? Is it like 'shrink wrap' ie put it on the panel then heat gun it till the wrinkles disappear?
Fascinating stuff.

If you search You Tube "car wrapping", there's lots of examples and demonstrates how it is applied - all clever stuff.

Evening all its me.
Both paint and wrapping have pros and cons. They also have a lot in common. As with paint if you get a stone chip you need to touch it in with a touch up stick. Other wise the paint chip will rust and the wrap would lift. The surface needs to be prepared properly or defects show through. We usually don't do door shuts unless at an extra cost. A door shut can take as long to do as a whole side of the car. One major benefit is repairs. If you have a metallic sprayed car and you say get the door keyed you would likely need to get the full side of the car painted or at minimum blown into the wing and rear 1/4. But with wrap you simply re-wrap the door and you don't need to worry about blending it.
Also it is very easily changed. I wrapped my Skyline a mixture of bright orange, carbon and printed cartoon wrap to advertise the company (see pics). Then when I went to sell it everybody who showed interest didn't like the cartoon wrap so in an afternoon I changed it (again see pics) and it sold straight away.
We are also 3M approved wrappers and are their certified agent for South Wales area (although we do travel). We have to wrap directly for Ford a brand new Focus RS500. They are supplied wrapped in 3M Series 85 wrap and this one has been damaged in transit so we have been asked to repair.
Any image can be printed and wrapped below are some pics of a national trust vehicle I have just finished. The windows are done in a material called contravision where you can see out but no one can see in.
Any more questions feel free to ask

great idea !!! the grey metallic 300ZX looks great from the pictures.i may have to put my spray guns away

Is the finish as good/shiny as paint?

I've only ever seen it in matt, carbon, or graphics and I think it looks superb. Just don't know how good it is in one colour( as I havn't seen it in the flesh).

We saw David Yu's Nissan GTR at Auto-Sport this year - do you remember the purple one ??

I didn't think it was as shiny as paint.

When I saw coops car a couple of weeks back I must agree that it is not as shiny as paint but still looked impressive though

With regard to shine it depends what colour you pic. Eg the Yodel vans in the pics are incredibly shiny and can be lightly polished.
