Woohoo! Got one!

It seems to be pretty solid no major rust trauma, needs a little bit of TLC in parts though but drives well as the engine was very recently rebuilt at Fourways.

All being well I'll be picking it up next Saturday and enjoying a leisurely drive back home up the M6 ;)

Any one want to buy a Lotus Elise so I can start spending a fortune on the car?

Cheers,
Rob

looks like quite a good one for a change.it you do the engine bay and front lower spoiler it will be a minter. do you have any plans for it ?

There's few other small tatty bits to take care of as well as the spoiler but overall it's in good nick.

My plans are extensive ;)

In no particular order are, suspension, brakes and engine. Thinking Tokico Illimuna plus coil overs. Discs all around and fuel injection through individual throttle bodies, followed by increased engine size possibly followed by a supercharger. That'll of course mean that the gearbox and diff will need sorting as well.

Should keep me busy!

Cheers,
Rob

Nice plans Rob, will be a completely different (black) beast when you've finished.

Just something to be aware of, I've been told to prepare for a very bumpy ride with the Tokico Illuminas, I have a friend in the States who has the adjustables and he says that even the lowest setting will have your fillings out. But if that's what you like, enjoy. :D

I have FI on my 240Z and I like the idea of the individual throttle bodies on a weber style manifold. I wish you luck and I'd be interested to hear how you get along.

Regarding supercharging the L Series, Mike Feeney (Mr.F) is developing a supercharger himself for his 280ZX and he would be a good contact for you.

Enjoy the drive on Saturday :D!

Hmmmm, thanks for the heads up on the Illuminas, I shall do further research I think especially as I'll be going up to at least a 16" rim. Shame Nitron don't do strut inserts :(

Mr. F, you out there? what's the word on your blower? I'm guessing my setup will be a sod as I'll need a custom airbox to fit the throttle bodies and I have a feeling I won't be able to run too much boost through the TBs. I was thinking about a small(ish) centrifugal type with either a charge cooler or an intercooler and just use it to help beef the torque curve up and smooth things out. Should make living with an individual TB setup a bit easier as well.

Cheers,
Rob

The blower I have previously ran through triple D'ellorto and a custom, sealed airbox - quite successful in a 240Z, running twelve second quarters. You need to check that individual throttle bodies are available with sealed shafts (like Lotus D'ellorto) to be able to take the boost, or that they can be machined to take seals. Custom programmable ECU will be required - lots of choice out there now. Intercooling will help run a little more boost safely, but don't expect high boost figures with most available superchargers. The big advantage is that the power is all low down where you can really use it regularly.

Check out Mark Rayner's turbo 260Z and Dean Bottriell's radical turbo 240Z for ideas.

Congrats Rob - looks like an honest car and completetly unmolested since the '80s (sunroof and Escort door mirrors) !

You gonna run around in it for a while as it is (performance wise) before gutting it ?

Thanks for the info Mike, all these extra little nuggets of info come in handy! I'm imagining I'll be building a TB setup using Jenvey TBs on a Webber manifold. There is a place in Oz that already builds a complete setup but I can't imagine that will work out any cheaper. Also TWM in the states are apparently puttting a kit together for around $3k I believe which might be worth checking out.

I met Mark Rayner last Wednesday at the local meet. Alas his car wasn't on show but he brought a copy Japanese Performance so we could drool over the pics of his baby.

Sean, I guess I will take it steady for a bit. Number 1 priority will be sorting the bodywork blemishes out and making sure it's in a good, solid state to start modding, then I can crack on with the madness :D

Cheers,
Rob

Look forward to the madness setting in :D

Would anyone know what issue of Japanese Performance Mark Rayner's car is featured in?

Black Bug's 240

I saw that car on E/bay, made tentative bid on it but it looked too tidy for me and it had a sunroof which I didn't want for a rally car. Ended up with the 240 I first looked at on E/bay because it was red & needed all the bits I was going to change anyway. Liked the registration no on my car too, FPW 77K. Lady friends name is Pam Walton, 7.7k is probably what it will cost me for the preparation!;)

That link has wetted my appetite, now I'm hungry! Off to the newsagent to grap myself a copy.:D :D

That's Margaret Bukowski's old car !

Previous registration number 24 OZ

See Colin Shipways "Essential Datsun Z" page 27

Aha, certainly saw a few Bukowski's mentioned in the extensive documentation. Shame the reg has changed though :(

Speaking of regs', what size is the standard 2 line rear plate? I want to get some black ones made up that actually fit rather than bend across the rear panel!

Cheers,
Rob

I may be wrong but I think its just a standard motorbike rear plate.

Anyway, I measured mine and its: 12" x 7.5"

Just discovered it's not a standard motorbike rear plate at all, you need to specify the measurements and get it cut accordingly.

Someone mentioned supercgarger's. Ive been in contact with Sam Cook Racing in the states, he was making a complete kit with a Holley jetronic system, which is no longer available from him as a complete setup, but he is currently developing a system with blower and direct manifold injection. This should be available around march, and i hope to fit one to myL28. Ive always prefered superchargers due to the lower rev benefits and smoother torque curve.

It's not the size of the plate as such, you take the standard letter size and you must have a 11mm border around it (or something like that) so yes it could be bike plate in size as it would be the same configuration.

Unless of course you ride a trials motorbike in which case your allowed a small plate.

Lovely looking car, nice house too!
