Plan to attend the Buxton classic car auction tomorrow. Noticed a 280xz 2+2 at estimate £20,000-£25,000 + buyers premium! A Little startled but await the outcome. I wonder that the established 240Z/260Zorder is about to be eclipsed.

Well time will tell. In fairness the car is a RHD UK first registered vehicle as far as I can tell and has unusually low mileage. It wasn't so long ago, perhaps 2014, that a similar car could be bought for £3,500. Damn! I should have clicked 'buy it now !!

Ahhh no, that’s just not realistic. There seems to be a bit of a trend with auction houses trying to sell 280ZX for silly money at the present time. I know of three at different auction sites going in the region of £20K plus. None of which I would rate as a £20k plus car. I love my 280ZX but there are far better and more capable cars I would spend that kind of cash on. (Does that mean I now have to leave the club for saying that?)😳

Sold for £16500, plus buyers commission and Vat. Total to pay £22,275, which is a very good price for a 2+2 and an automatic.

So Huw, on this price I reckon your 2-seater must be worth more than this, and my 2-seater worth more than I thought!

Japanese classic cars are all finally being recognised as good collectable cars, as we all knew.

Huw, don't get too excited.

You only pay VAT on the commission, not the whole amount.

£16,500, sale price.

£2,062, commission at 12.5%.

£412.50, VAT on the commission.

£18,974.50 Total.

Regardless of the vat on commission someone was still prepared to spend 22k on the 280zx auto, although they have never reached such high prices the will if somebody wants one not everyone is hooked on 240s or 260s just because there the car to have it’s all about what someone wants ,likes and what they want to pay .🤔

I did go along to Buxton on the day. The car was in quite outstanding and original condition (perhaps the the wheels might have stood a refurb). I haven't been able to find a sale price from the auction site (it makes no declaration) but wonder that it was a seller withdrawal. Overall it seems that a high quality and unmolested (modified) car is valuable.

It never reached its reserve so, as yet, its not sold. A deal may yet be done with the highest bidder, it went to £16,500.

This would still be the highest I have seen a 280zx achieve. Unless someone knows better?

Derrick, have to agree with Huw, it's certainly no "heap". I can see why you were offered such an amount for it, not seen anything better.

Values are most definitely on the up, not surprising when even Vauxhalls, Ford's, etc are making big money. As someone who had cars in the 70s and 80s, I suffered all the associated problems British and European cars gave you. Once you buy Japanese you realise how reliable they are.

My first Datsun 260 was the first car I bought and everything worked on it so yeah they were much better than the English stuff

This car is now on Ebay for £20,000, so the owner was not happy to take the £16,500 it reached at auction.
